Despondency and Ill Health Responsible For Rash Act Of Prominent Citizen
James West, proprietor of West's Loose Floor in Hopkinsville, and for years one of the outstanding tobacco men of all this section committed suicide by shooting himself at his office in Hopkinsville last Friday morning.
Mr. West suffered a nervous breakdown last fall and was critically ill for some weeks. Later he became better and had continued to go about his place of business, although he had never entirely recovered.
He went to his office Friday morning, and finding a pistol lying in the office left by some watchman of the place placed it to his head and pulled the trigger. Death followed immediately.
James West was born in Christian county a few miles north of Hopkinsville, February 11, 1861, a son of Henry M. West. He was educated in Ferrell's High School and was married to his first wife in 1887. A son and a daughter were born to this union.
The son, James West Jr., died before reaching manhood. The daughter, Mary, is now Mrs. H. H. Harned, of Dawson Springs. Some years after the death of his first wife, Mr. West married Miss Ella Black, a daughter of the late Judge W. P. Black, of Princeton in 1904. She survives him with their one son, William B. West, now a student at Center College.
He had been active in the public affairs of Hopkinsville for years, and as a churchman was an official in the Presbyterian church, of which he had long been a member.
