In Creek In Presence of Traveling Man Who Was Powerless To Aid Him
PADUCAH, Ky. Nov 24. Joseph Hobson, a prominent shoe drummer of Paducah, traveling for a Louisville house, returned today from Lightfoot Tenn. Thursday Hobson drove up to a raging creek near Lightfoot which had over flowered its bank on account of recent hard rains, and was on a seething rampage. While debating whether to cross Robert Willingham, overland mail carrier, whose route is from Ripley to Glynn, Tenn., drove up and upon questioning the shoe drummer and learning his fears regarding crossing the stream, laughed and told him, that he, Willingham, intended crossing, with which he reined his horse and entered the creek. On reaching the center, horse, wagon and rive were swept away by the rushing waters. Willingham being drowned before Mr. Hobson, who was powerless to render assistance, knowing sure death awaited if he swam out to rescue the man. Willingham's body was found several hours afterward miles down the stream.
