From the Mount Vernon Signal, Thursday, September 1, 1960: Mrs. Martha Melinda
Thompson, 84, died August 28 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Robert Wilmott of
Maretburg, after a long illness.
Mrs. Thompson was born in Bell County in 1875 the daughter of Esau and Mary
(Thompson) Hoskins.
She was married to Wilkerson N. Thompson who preceded her in death as did a
daughter, Grace Whitehouse, and a son, James Thompson.
Surviving are three sons, Neal Thompson of Mt. Vernon, Route 1, Lloyd Thompson of
Conway and Esau Thompson of Cincinnati, Ohio; six daughters, Mrs. Roxie Monk, Mrs.
Hattie Barron and Mrs. Robert Wilmott, all of Mt. Vernon, Route 1, Mrs. Chester Owens,
Mrs. Herbert Higgins and Mrs. Beecher Owens, all of Cincinnati.
Other survivors include 43 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren; two brothers, W.
J. Hoskins of Danville and George Hoskins of Calvin; four sisters, Mrs. Belle Zora
Hoskins and Mrs. Bessie Barnett of Loyall, Mrs. Maudie Hoskins of Michigan and Mrs.
Roseanna Davis of Calvin.
Funeral services were conducted August 30 at Maretburg Baptist Church where she was
a member. Brother Holmar was officiating minister. Interment was in Maretburg Cemetery.
Cox Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
