History of Brown's Grove Continues

October 17, 1981
I got a bit side-tracked last had been sent to me by Mr. Taz Rogers so will do so today. The history of Brown's Grove which narrative was discussing Mr. 0. H. Wilson's business.

"Close buying is the secret of low prices. The writer was surprised to find such a stock as Mr. Wilson carries, in a town of this size, and it is no wonder Brown's Grove bears the distinction of being one of the best business points to be found anywhere. There is no need of going elsewhere for goods when you can get them here in all the different varieties at lower prices and the people of this section and for miles around have long since learned that what they want can be found at Wilsons. Country produce is taken at highest market prices in exchange for merchandise.

"Mr. Wilson, who is also the efficient postmaster and has been for the past four years, was born in Henry County, Tenn., Nov. 14, 1863, and is a son of Jesse P. and Mrs. Matilda Wilson, the latter deceased. He was raised on a farm where he remained until 18 years of age.

"For some time he school in Henry County and in the state of Mississippi and was employed as bookkeeper for various firms in the two states. On Dec. 31, 1891, he was married to Miss Ollie Shelton, daughter of Elijah Shelton. To this union two children have been born, Grover and Ruby, the latter deceased.

"J.B. Jordan & Co., Merchants. The neat, cleanly, well-kept store of J.B. Jordan and Co. at Brown's Grove is doing a splendid business in the sale of choice dry goods, Hamilton-Brown shoes, light hardware, stoves, farming implements, etc. and groceries that fully meet the requirements of the pure foe law. This enterprising firm is composed of Mr. J. B. Jordan, and his father Mr. F.M. Jordan and step-mother and was established Dec. 3, 1909. Mr. J. B. Jordan, thE general manager is truly a liv wire merchant. He knows thi value of goods and knows how to buy them at low prices.

He was born Jan. 26, 1872 and is a son of F. M. and Sarah E. Jordan, the latter deceased. He worked on the farm and attended the common schools of his county, finishing his education with a three-term course at the well known institution of learning, the Farmington Institute. He then taught school one term at Harris Grove, returning to Brown's Grove and accepting a clerkshop with Brown and Jordan, which position he held eight years.

"The western fever then struck him and one year in that country was an ample sufficiency. "Returning to Brown's Grove he erected the handsome business house he now occupies and established business, which has been a success from its very incipiency. On Oct. 23, 1900, he was married to Miss Lula Oldham, and they are the parents of one son, Merritt, age eleven.

"Mr. Jordan is an Odd Fellow and a member of the Christian Church. He is a young man in age, but from a business standpoint ranks among the oldest and most progressive merchants of Western Kentucky. He believes in Brown's Grove and is interested in any and everything that wifi boost the town. He is public spirited to a marked degree and has done much toward the up-building of the town and making it the great business point that she is today.

"Brown's Grove is lucky in having this most excellent stock of goods to select from, with the courteous, accommodating J.B. Jordan in charge. The stock is all new, containing no old or shelf-worn goods whatever the firm represents the welknown tailoring concern of M. Born & Co. of Chicago, and can get you a tailor-made suit in a very short time at a mighty low price. See the samples. A fit is guaranteed. You'll be wanting some winter supplies pretty soon, and if you do justice to your self and pocketbook you will call on J.B. Jordan and Co. before spending your money elsewhere. It will mean a saving of many hard-earned dollars to you."
