DUNNING, William Leander, 2nd Lt.

William Leander Dunning who enlisted at 27 on October 24, 1861 at Hopkinsville, Ky in Company B, 8th Regiment of Kentucky, Infantry, CSA. He was 2nd Sergeant, then appointed 1st Sergeant Dec, 23, 1861 and 2nd Lt. Feb 2, 1862. His regiment marched to Clarkesville, Tn then took steamboats to Fort Donelson where they engaged in three days fighting with heavy losses.

show that he was one of 15,000 Confederate troops captured by General Grant Feb. 16, 1862. He was sent to Camp Chase, Oh. on March 1st. Camp Chase had a reputation for being vastly overcrowded with large numbers of sick men. On Apr 9, 1862 he was sent to Johnson's Island, Sandusky, Oh. and then to Vicksburg, Ms., Sep 1, 1862 where his name appears on a Roll of Prisoners of war, eleven hundred and four in number, arriving on the steamer John H. Done Sep 20, 1861. He was exchanged at Aikens Landing Nov 10, 1862.

Brother of Levi Dunning Passes Away In Oklahoma
Was Born in Trigg County and Served In the Confederate Army Mr. W. L. Dunning, brother of Levi S. Dunning, of Wallonia, died at his home in Marvin, Oklahoma, the 17th of January.

The deceased was born near Wallonia, in Trigg county, the 22nd day of December, 1834, and was the son of Levi and Jennette Dunning. In the fall of 1861, he enlisted in Bingham's company, which was company B of the 8th Regiment, C. S. A., and served quite a time as second lieutenant of same. He was taken prisoner at Fort Donaldson in February, 1862, and was held prisoner at Johnson's Island until August of same year, when he was exchanged and remained in the Confederate army until the spring of 1865.

He was married to Miss Laura Coy, daughter of W. S. Coy, of Wallonia, and moved to Texas in the spring of 1877, where he resided until a few years ago, when he moved to Marvin, where he continued to reside until his death. He had twelve brothers and sisters, only two of whom survive him - Mrs. F. E. Martin and L. S. Dunning, of Wallonia. He is also survived by a wife and seven children.
