The Grange met persuant to closing and opened in the fourth degree in due form. The worthy
master in the chair the worthy Overseer being absent Bro M Coffin was appointed to fill

and after some little alteration was approved. The regular order of business was called and
nothing done until coming to unfinished business when the question for discussion (the
protection of birds) was called up when an animated and interesting discussion ensued.
Bro Jas Strother Lecturer taking the lead. The Tener of the discussion went to show
that all birds are the friends of the Farmer and Should be protected by statute law as well
as by early training of boys. The whole gist of the argument to Show that the Grangers are
the best friends the birds have. On motion the question was dropped. The worthy Lecturer
then announced that the Grange would discuss the culture of oats and all the minutia pertaining thereto at the next meeting The unwritten work of the order was then called for as per previous agreement and was fully
exemplified by Bro M Coffin. There being no further business the Grange closed in due
form

The Grange met persuant to closing and opened in the fourth degree in due form The worthy
Master in the Chair the Worthy Overseer & being absent Bro. M Coffin was appointed to
fill his chair protem with two exceptions the other officers was all present The regular order
of business was called Upon the call for bills and accounts The Secretary presented al bill
for recording Book 50 c and other stationery 21 c Total. 71 c which was ordered paid. The
subject selected at the last meeting for discussion (the culture of oats and evrything
pertaining to them) was called up and a very interesting and instructive discussion ensued.
Most of the Brothers agreed that it mattered but little how slovenly they ware put in so
they ware got in the ground by or before the middle of March a majority however favored
plowing with a shovel plow and then brush the ground All agreed they are the very best of
food for horses but horses that are not accustomed to eating thrashed oats are liable to get
choaked unless they are wet before feeding. Some recommeded Salting them as they are being
put in the mow as a preventive
Page 3
of rats and mice cutting them this however Seemed to be a novel idea As to oats bein exhaustive
to land it was the prevalent opinion that they are not more so than other ordinary crops.
On motion the question of oat culture was dropped The Apple Orchard and evrything pertaining
thereto was Selected for discussion at next meeting An order for three dollars ,20 c was drawn
on the treasurer to pay two quarters State Grange dues There being no further business the
Grange closed in due form Bro. Wm D Coffin paid three dollars 50 the ammount of his

The Grange met persuant to closing and opened in the fourth degree in due form. The Worthy
Master and Overseer in their respective chairs. The other officers all present with one or
two exceptions The regular order of business was called and no business presented until the
question for discussion was called for (the culture of Apples) was called for when a very
interesting discussion followed being partisipated in by a majority of the Brothers manifesting
a goodeal of interest in the Subject. The Worthy Lecturer taking the lead with a few well
timed remarks. Nearly all the Members agreeing that fall planting is not as good as Spring
The reason assigned was that the freezing through the winter is liable to heart the trees out
of the ground and leave the roots exposed. The Worthy Chaplain gave his experience in planting
an Orchard in the fall. He dug
Page 5
the holes considerable deeper than he designed planting the tree and filled in the bottom with
top soil and set the tree on that. A great many of the trees died. He wound up by Saying
emphatically he would never would try fall planting again Bro M Coffin then took the
floor and said the first important step in rearin a good orchard was to make a good selection
of trees as well as varieties and if not acquainted with the different varieties he would
advise going to some reliable nurceryman and get him to make selection for you he would not
plant the tree but little deeper than it grew in the nursery. Start the head three and a half
feet high with three branches or main shoot and maintain the three branches through the first
pruning ie when the first shoots get 2½ or 3 feet long start three more and so on maintaining
a centre stem The W Secretary thought three varieties of winter apples enough for any sized
orchard no matter how large
Page 6
but there must be some summer and fall apples mixed in with them enough for home consumption
on being asked to name the three varieties said Rome Beauty, Ben Davis and Smiths Cider they
being the best it is useless to plant other inferior varieties The Worthy Master then made
gave a short address on the growing importance of fruit culture Bro M Coffin said the
subject was not exhausted and moved the discussion be continued at next meeting which on being
put to vote carried unanimous Sister Lucie Barclay not having been installed with the
other officers was duely installed L A Steward There being no further business the
Grange proceeded to close to meet on the second saturday in May 1879

The Grange met persuant to closing and opened in the fourth degree in due form with the worthy
master and W Overseer in their respective chairs The worthy Lecturer being absent Bro Jas
Buchanan was appointed to fill his Chair protem The other officers all present except Flora
and Ceres An address which was ordered by from the W master of the State Grange to the
Subordinate Granges throughout the State was red and exerted a reviving influence in the
Grange A communication from Jefferson Pomona Grange No 22 inviting Milton Grange to meet with
them on the first Thursday in June (a drawing of a hand pointing to the margin. Written in
margin:) to make arangments for holding a jubilee the coming fall (drawing if hand pointing
back) The Grange not feeling disposed to go in mass on motion proceeded to elect delegates
to represent them at said meeting which resulted in the election of the W master Wm S White
and Bro W P Ewing. The question (the culture of Apples) which was laid over at our last meeting
was called up and an interesting discussion
followed
Page 8
which was participated in by most of the brothers. The worthy Lecturer set a goodeal of Store
to the jenating (penating?) prineifally (principally or Pinsteal?) on account of it being a
shure (share?) bearer and a pretty good keeper He said it did not command as good prices in
market as some other varieties but that was overbalanced by its bearing qualities He
recommended highly washing the trees with lime and soap to prevent rabbits gnawing them besides
that it is highly beneficial to the health of the tree Bro Spillman then took the floor
He recommended the Frankford Queen as a fall Apple for drying it being a very large and a good
cooker in cultivating an orchard it makes but little difference what kind of crop is grown
among the trees. He did not object to growing small grain in an orchard Bro Spillman also
Spoke in the highest terms of the Porter as a fall apple The Lowhead was highly recommended
for drying The Ben Davis Rome Beauty and Smith Cider was conceded by all to be the best winter
varieties though not for late keepers Pruning &c
Page 9
Bro Spillman would not have an orchard pruned at any other time than June of even though he
could get it done for nothing he contends that wounds mad at that time year will heal more
redily than if made earlier in the season The Worthy secretary disagreed with Bro Spillman
except in caces whare trees are growin so thrifty they will not make fruit buds in that event
I will do to prune in June Water Sprouts should be rubbed off as soon as they make their
appearance. The worthy Master then took the floor he is emphatically opposed to growing small
grain in an orchard and recommended fertalizing the trees after they come in to bearing as the
ground becomes exhausted of the properties that is required to make perfect fruit He then
gave a list of varieties for Summer fall and winter (Summer) E Harvest Red Astrican (Fall)
Rambo Porter Lowhead to dry Winter Smith Cider winesap Ben Davis & Rome Beauty
The session Bro Isaac Trout thought the question pretty well exhausted
Page 10
and moved to drop it and take up the culture of corn for discussion at our next meeting
carried There being no further business before The Grange proceeded to close to meet again

The Grange met in the Masonic hall at the usual hour and opened in the fourth degree in due
form with the Worthy Master and OverSeer in their respective chairs. The W Lecturer and
Chaplain being absent their chairs was temporarily filled by appointing Bro J G McIntire
Lecturer and Bro W F Trout Chaplain The regular order of business was called with out anything
being done until the question for discussion (the culture of corn)was called for. The season
for cultivating corn having passed the Grange did not enter into the discussion with that zeal
that is usually characterize the discussions of the Grange Bro J G McIntire opened the
discussion his mode of culture is to break the ground deep and cultivate deep with Small plows
until the last time then go through with a cultivater or Small harrow Bro M Coffin Said his
plan was much the Same as Bro McIntires but strongly recommended using a drag in place of the
cultivater, especially in dry weather
Page 12
he thought the drag could be used to advantage once a week in a protracted drouth the ground
being mashed fine on top acting as mulching the moisture would be retained better than when
left in ridges as the plow usually leaves the ground The W Master then took the floor his
plan is to put the ground in good condition by thorough plowing and harrowing then cultivate
with double shovel but as to the last working it is hard for him to determine whether to leave
the ground level or go through the middle with a single shovel plow so as to leave the ground
in a condition that the water will drain to the middle of the rows The Worthy Secretary then
took the floor and Said to know how to break ground for corn it is necessary to have a
foreknowlege of what sort of a season (whether wet or dry) was going to follow. If wet he
would break Shallow but if dry break deep The roots of all plants feed deep or on the
surface owing to wet or dry weather When the weather is dry they feed down where it is moist
and Should your ground be broke Shallow the plant would not derive any advantage from the top
Soil
Page 13
he favored level culture The members were unanimous with one exception in favor of leaving
the ground level when through with the cultivation. The discussion was brought to a close on
motion of Bro M Coffin to drop the question and take up the culture of fall grain for
discussion a next meeting which was agreed to There being no further business the Grange in

one year and three months twenty five dollars On motion the bill was allowed and ordered paid
after which there appeared to be some misunderstanding in regard to the correctness of the bill
when a motion to reconsider prevailed. After some discussion a motion to lay the matter on the
table until the next meeting of the Grange (carried) The question for discussion (the culture
of winter grain) was then called up
Page 15
and an interesting and instructive discussion followed. The W Lecturer taking the lead with
some well timed remarks. To insure a good crop of wheat the ground should be put in the very
best condition possible by plowing and harrowing then drill the wheat using 200# bone dust to
the acre on thin land but 150# he thought enough for moderately good land with that kind of
treatment he thought failure in the wheat crop would be of rare occurance and without bone or
Some other furtelizer the crop would fall to be remunerative Bro Trout thought ashes one among
the best furitelizers He gave an account of an experiment he once made by burning a lot of
Straw on a part of a field that he Sowed to Wheat which made three times as much as whare there
was no straw burned Bro White would not plow very deep for wheat in consequence of the plant
being Strictly a surface feeder he would not use bone dust on the river bottoms having tried
it without any perceptible advantage There ware Several others took an active part
Page 16
in the discussion The best variety of wheat was not discussed The question was not considered
exhausted and on motion was laid over until the next meeting of the Grange

question which was laid over at the last meeting The discussion was opened by the W Lecturer
An interesting discussion followed most of the Brothers taking part and prolonging the
discussion to near the time for closing when on motion the question was laid over for further
discussion at the next meeting The next business in order was the bill (which had been laid
over at last meeting) for rent of Hall After some discussion it was agreed that the Grange

The Grange met in the Masonic Hall persuant to closing on Sept 27th 1879 and opened in the
first degree in due form Bro M Coffin in the protem The W Overseer and Chaplain in their
respective Chairs. The W Lecturer being absent Bro W S White being out of the Chair as
(having surrendered the the Chair for the present meeting) was appointed Lecturer Protem.
(written in margin: The minutes of the previous meeting red and aproved) The Master proceeded
to call the regular order of business and there being nothing before the Grange the discussion
of wheat culture for the third time was called for Most of the Brothers present having taken
part in the two former discussion sumed rather backward in leading off but finally Bro White
took he thought there is no danger of over stocking the Wheat market. He recommend highly
sowing Salt on wheat in the Spring he having raised the Second best crop of wheat in Hunters
Bottom this past season and thinks Salt was the main cause his neighbor who excelled him used
Salt also On being asked how much Salt he uses per acre replied two and half or three Bushels
(written in margin: put on wet or dry). He thinks salt Stiffens the straw and prevents
lodging
Page 19
The question was then asked whether the Hessian fly that may be in the volunteer wheat on
fallow ground and not destroyed in plowing will injure the crop sown He answered that as
soon as the fly is hatched it begins to rise its wings and flies away and is as liable to
infest someother field as the one in which it received its existance he also thinks whare
wheat is on good ground and growing well the fly injures it but very little Bro Trout and
others concured in the above opinion After some further discussion it was moved and seconed
the wheat question be dropped (carried) Bro W S White moved to discuss the importance of
making the saving of seed corn a special business (carried) The W Secretary then red a piece
published in the Grange Bulletin entitled Some of the Patrons duties. Sister Holsclaw and
Sister Coffin applied for and was advanced to the Second degree of the Order

when on examining the Books it was fount that he was in arrears for dews and could not be
granted a Demit Moved and Seconed that Bro Lambs dues be remitted and a Demit issued. The
question was discussed and the only reason offered for canseting his dues was his bad health
for some months previous to leaving the State the question was called for and the(underline
the word 'the') vote was unanimous for the motion The question that had been selected for
discussion (the importance of taking Special care of Seed corn) was taken up and discussed at
Some length Bro McIntire taking the lead
Page 21
Bro W S White thought the best method of saving seed corn is to go through the field before
cutting up the corn and select the earliest ears to ripen take them to the crib or some
place whare they will dry out thoroughly before cold weather by so doing there will be but
little trouble in the spring to get a good stand Bro M Coffin was of the same opinion his
plan is to select the largest earliest and best ears as soon as the husk begins to dry strip
up the husk tie the ears together thereby and hang in some dry place then in Spring select
again the best and you will have seed that will grow. Others thought it a good plan to crib
corn in the husk the husk would protect the germ from being killed by the cold weather in
winter The question being pretty well exhausted a motion to drop the question was carried
Moved we discuss (at next meeting) the best manner of taking stock through the winter carried
The Grange was then closed informally in the Second degree and opened in the third.

proceeded to Initiate Miss Izorah McIntire into the first degree of the order Bro Strother
then took the Lecturers chair and the Grange then commenced the discussion of the question of
the best method of fattening hogs and curing the Meat. The W Lecturer took the lead. He has
been feeding his hogs Shipstuff and wheat bran with Satisfactory results mixing one third
Shipstuff and two thirds bran
Page 26
Bro Jas McIntire thought it best to let let the slop sour a little before feeding he Said
hogs would fatten faster than feeding the slop sweet he thinks it is an all important thing
to have the meat perfectly cool before salting that being attended to and a liberal portion
of salt tout on there is but little dange of the meat spoiling. The W Master thought it not much
economy to pay toll and have corn ground for hogs but admitted it would take less corn but had
some doubts as to the differance paying the toll This mode of Saving meet through the Summer
is to Keep it in a dark smoke house or (hanging up) or pack down in thrashed oats A majority
of the Brothers concured that cooking feed is time and labor lost On motion the question was

be appointed to procure five bushels of coal and store it away in its propper place. The
question was put to vote without debate and carried unanimous and when Bro Irvin Mayfield was
appointed the committee. There being no further new business to attend to the question for
discussion (the care of Poultry) was called for and discussed at considerable length and
was made quite interesting. The W Lecture Bro Jas Strother taking the lead by reading a
report from the Chautauqua County Pa Poultry association giving the best bred of chickens for
the production of eggs &c The worthy Chaplain gave some of his experience in raising poultry
he sold 125 doz eggs from the last of Oct to the first of March averaging over .20 per Doz
$25.00
Page 28
His manner of treating young chickens for gapes is to take a head of bluegrass strip the
seed off and with it twist the worms out of the windpipe. To prevent disease in his flock he
uses ground black pepper in their feed. He thinks if disease could be kept off the raising
of poultry could be made quite remunerative. Bro Hackett said his remedy for gapes is the
yolk of an egg and lard mixed to a paste and rubbed on the heads this with him has proved an
infalible remedy. The Worthy Master Stated he had seen a statement that the poultry of the
country yielded as great a revenue as the wheat crop he thinks farmers generally does not pay
that attention to raising poultry that the business deserves and cited to different person
that are making the business a speciality and are making fortunes at it and if it can be
done in other countries it can be done here On motion the question of raising poultry was

which was adopted.
Resolutions: Whereas Agriculture is the foundation upon which rests all other professions and
occupations and is so closely connected with all other persuits that whenever the agricultural
interests of a Nation are to and great extent paralized all other secations must suffer in the
same ratio Therefore
Resolved: That we as Patrons will use our best efforts to incourage and by our example
stimualate a more thorough cultivation and better knowledge of methods that are intimately
connected with our progress as tillere of the soil, and will ever guard our interests as
agriculturists
Resolved: by Milton Grange that the members are earnestly requested,
(on this the begining of the New Year) to renew again the pledges of loyalty to the principles
enjoined by the Order, especially to those that enjoin upon Patrons a careful attention
to the political duties required at the hands of every citizen of the nation, and we do this
in the light of the fact that the unequal representation had by the different professions
in the political life of the States; has and will result in Legislation derogatory to our
interests as Patrons and hence works against the better good of all; and while we urge this
as a special duty we would have you guard with a vigilant eye the door of political warfare,
Resolved: that we as an Order know no North, no South
Page 35
no East, no West, But on the contrary will use our best efforts to harmonize honest
differences of opinion whether in business relations, or in the political or religious
relations of life That we may being together the various parts of society to live in harmony
as one grand Brotherhood.
Resolved: that we are opposed to any and all class legislation wheather in behalf of
professions of the industriers of life, but would give to all their just and legitimate
rights.
Resolved: that we as an Order have a deep interest in education and would advise that all

intellectual attainments.
Resolved: that we will endeavor to a old dignity to labor. AS it is upon that; the whole
progress of the world must rise or fall, and that all homes & labor wheather in the workshop,

of the day being called Which was the cultivation of potatoes The Brother Lecturer gave
us a lecture on their cultivation and contended that potatoes seed would degenerate and to
succeed they must be planted before planting the we have advantage of the first sprouts and
that Paris Green was on Injurious to the potatoes and then gave his plan of preparing the
ground and the cultivation and thought plowing was not Injurious after they began to set
and passed to give us some very good Idied in general Worthy Chaplain Brother Trout Spoke
at some length on the subject of
Page 59
seed and cultivation contending that large seed was the best was In favor of cutting off
the opposite end to the stem and thowing it away and gave his plan of cultivation and
would stop when in bloom and thought that too many stalks was Injurous and should be thined
was infavor of not planting too deep as he had noticed a complete failure by so doing
W. O Brother Mcentire gave us his plan of planting and cultvation was infavor of deep
planting and cutting to one or two eye and covering with well rotted manure before planting
putting on the soil Brother White contended that it was neatly all in the season for a good
crop and the discussion pretty general The W M gave his experience cultivating potatoes
with the Early rose varieties and from 1/2 half a pound raised a bushel of fine potatoes
was infavor of preuring seed from other section was not in favor of deep planting on Thought
cultivation after blooming was an injury as nature started the young potatoes where it should
grow on motion the subject was stopped
