Joseph Pugh is my Gr. gr. gr. gr. Grandfather, Not much has been found on his family, I have not been able to document who his parents were.

According to the Tax list of Bourbon County he first showed in 1788 he showed for that year. He must have still owned land in Rowan County, North Carolina as he showed there in 1789.
In 1793 the Tax Returns showed that he was granted a license to conduct an ordinary (Tavern or Inn Keeper) located on Townsend Creek in the same county.
Joseph  Pugh was on the 1800 Bourbon County Tax List.
Joseph  Pugh was on the 1810 Tax List.

Notes
Daniel was 74 years old at death. Daniel III was about 22 years old when his father moved the family from western Pennsylvania to the Kentucky District of Virginia and settled in the Ruddles Mills section of Bourbon County. In 1788, both he and his father signed a petition by Bourbon County residents to the seat of government in Virginia, asking to establish a town of Bourbon Courthouse. Virginia did establish a new county, Mason Co. in 1789, which was taken off of Bourbon Co. The Shawhan property straddled the new county line - the stillhouse and barns lay in Bourbon Co., and the homestead lay in Mason Co. In 1790 Daniel took a flatboat load of the family's whiskey to New Orleans, returning on a horse he had purchased, carrying saddlebags laden with Spanish coins. This would be the first of many such trips that would be made to sell Shawhan whiskey. When his father died in 1791, Daniel became the family head. Together with his brother John, they continued to manage the family farm and distillery, with both making trips to New Orleans on flatboats loaded with "Old Bourbon Whiskey" and brandy. Kentucky was admitted as a state in 1792, shortly after Daniel III and Mary McDowell were married. They continued to live in the family homestead, which was in Mason County. Fleming County was created off of Mason Co. In 1798, their residence and a part of the farm became a section of Fleming County, while the still house, barns, and other parts of the farm remained in Bourbon County. Daniel farmed, raised will-bred horses and cattle, bought grain from his neighbors for his distillery, and sold a goodly amount of whiskey. He also accumulated a sizeable number of slaves who farmed and helped with the distillery. Family tradition holds that he became quite wealthy, but he was never certain as to the validity of his Kentucky land that had been originally settled by his father. In 1825 John Quincy Adams was inaugurated President and John C. Calhoun, Vice President. That same year, after freeing his slaves and selling his share of the distillery to his brother Joseph, Daniel moved his family to Rush Co., Indiana where he farmed and was no longer connected to the distillery business. When he  closed out his affairs in Kentucky he divided most of his wealth equally among his children. The August 1851 final settlement of his estate included the following provisions of his will dated Dec. 31, 1839: "My will is first all my just debts shall be sold to pay my debts. Then I wish my wife to have my household furniture, one horse beast known by the name of Flim, also one cow known by the name of Lill, also eight head of sheep, two sets of horse gear, and one cutting box in the barn, and all the remainder of my land that is left after my debts are paid, to have and to hold the same during her life time for a home for her. Also a home for Mary Lightfoot and her children so long as they wish to remain here, as I do not want them to be turned out of doors, but my wife is to have entire control over the premises and at her death I wish all my property both real and personal to be equally divided among my children and that John M Shawhan is my executor. Witnessed by David H. Drwmmond, William M. Shawhand and Edward L. McGee."

Mary McDowell
Notes:
Mary participated in the Burial event in Fairview Church, Rush Co. Indiana. She was the daughter of Daniel McDowell, a Revolution soldier who came to Bourbon Co. at an early date: while living in Kentucky. He received a $40.00 annual pension for his service.

Wallace Family
Printed by Permission of the Bourbon County Genealogical Society (2003-2010)

The Wallace family first showed up in 1790 in Bourbon County; at least that is what records show.

Joseph Wallace, wife Elizabeth Rogers Wallace and their 2 children, Andrew and Isabella came to Bourbon County from Loudon Co. VA where Joseph and Elizabeth married in 1786.  Joseph Wallace's father, Joseph Sr. was in Fayette Co. KY where he died March 1791 and is buried in Walnut Hill Cemetery, near Lexington.  The mother was not mentioned, probably died in PA or VA where the family was before Loudon Co. Joseph Senior who died in 1791 was a son of Robert Wallace who was from Northern Ireland and came to Bucks Co. PA about 1739 but had been in America since 1720 according to most researchers.
Andrew and Esther Wallace are named as being confirmed in the old Cane Ridge church as are other family members.  Others from Bourbon County who came to Hewitt were the Bowlegs, Kenney and Barnett families.
Joseph raised his children in Bourbon County and died there in 1807.  His widow later married David James on; she died in 1827.
Joseph's son, born 1787 in VA, married Esther Campbell in 1810 in Fayette Co. KY; he served in the War of 1812, fighting at the Battle of Thames, in Michigan.  The Wallace family was in Bourbon County until 1830 when they sold their land in October and soon after came to Hewitt Co. ILL with 9 of their children; two more were born here.
Andrew lived the rest of his life in Tun bridge Township.  He died there in 1874 and is buried in Randolph Cemetery which was formerly called the Wallace Burying Ground.  His widow lived until 1885, died May and is also buried there as is son Andrew Jackson Wallace who died in 1863 from wounds received in the Civil War.

Children of Thomas W Wells and his wives Julia A Patrick & Sarah Jones
Submitted by: Bruce P Barrett
Printed by Permission of the Bourbon County Genealogical Society (2003-2010)

Summary:        During the research of my Wells ancestors two brothers required more persistence than normal.  These were Jefferson Reed Wells and his brother Thomas W Wells.  After arriving in Russell County, prior to 1870 along with his parents Edward and America Wells and siblings, Jefferson Reed is said to have loaded his family and possessions in a wagon and headed to Kentucky never to be heard from again.   Jefferson's brother Thomas W Wells married Julia A Patrick in 1872 after moving to Russell County.  They lived in the same area as Thomas's parents and started a family.  Sometime after 1880 Thomas and Julia move to Knox County. Tennessee.   At some point prior to the 1900 census Thomas divorced and/or separated from Julia as he is not living with Julia at the time of the 1900 census.
Jefferson and Thomas were reconnected, whether they were aware of it or not in the 1895 marriage of Jefferson's youngest son Robert R and Thomas's daughter Elmiry also known as Alma.  Robert and Alma are 1st cousins.  The marriage didn't last long as Robert died 28 August 1904.
Walter Israel stated the following in reference to Thomas W Wells and Julia A Patrick's children as related by his daughter Charlene.
.                                   "Bless Daddy's heart" here is what he told Kathy in 1977.  "My mother had three brothers. One named M.O. the other Thomas, the other Reid Wells who settled in Hyders Gap. He disappeared and no one knew what become of him.  His brother Thomas settled in Knoxville, Tenn. He raised five children Bradley and Baker were the two boys and three girls Muriel, Vic. and Elmer"

Note:  We know that Elimry and Alma are the same person because of age and 1910 census where Alma is shown as the daughter of Julia.

Sources: THE WHEELER FAMILY
From the Wheeler Family History-Noblesville, Indiana-dated 1913, pages 36-39.

The Wheelers were an old Colonial family but at what exact point along the coast they settled is not definitely known.
The earliest records are of two brothers, William and Thomas, who were taken to Virginia in childhood and there grew to manhood. The ancestor of the Indiana branch of the Wheeler family was William who was born April 27, 1768. When in their early days both brothers pushed on to Kentucky, where William settled in Nicholas County, while Thomas remained only a short time and then went on to Ohio He located Chillicothe, married and reared a family and many of his family are scattered throughout that section. William farmed in Kentucky for years but in 1826 moved to Hamilton County, Indiana, where a son had gone two years before and he settled near him In the township of Noblesville, three miles from that village. The journey was made with horses and wagons and required considerable time. The rest of his life was passed on this farm and he died in February 1833. William Wheeler was a typical pioneer, of strong physique, six feet tall and weighing about 180 pounds. During the war of 1812 He enlisted with two comrades from Kentucky, John Stoops and George Burk and saw considerable service in Canada. In politics he was an old
line Whig. William Wheeler was married three times. His first wife whose name is not known, had two daughters, Margaret and Mary, of whom Mary died in
Kentucky. He next married Miss Rose Ann Ishmaul, a native of Wales, who had come to Nicholas County and she too died in Kentucky. Her children were as follows:

1. John Wheeler born Sept. 29, 1807
2. Nancy Wheeler born Oct. 3, 1809
3. Roseann Wheeler, born Jan. 2, 1812
4. Thomas Wheeler, born Feb. 3,1814

The third wife was widow, Mrs. Sarah (Ferguson) Burns, and she bore him two children, namely:

William Wheeler, born Oct. 5, 1813, and Moses
Wheeler born March 11, 1819.

John Wheeler, oldest son of William Wheeler, born Sept. 29,1807, grew up on the Kentucky frontier and had no chance for even the rudiments of an education during his boyhood, but after his marriage his wife taught him to read and write. His main book was the Bible and he became a close student of its teachings. His father's farm on Licking River was close to that of Phillip Stoops, another pioneer, who had a daughter, Mary, and the two young: people fell in love with each other and were betrothed. Early in September 1826, Phillip Stoops and his family started for Indiana, traveling with an ox team and a team of horses and John Wheeler accompanied them. He drove the oxen and led a two-year old colt. The party camped out along the way in true pioneer style and were five weeks in making the journey, arriving at their destination Oct. 1, 1826. On March 5, following, the young couple were married and began their long
life together. John Wheeler had taken an eight-year lease from Aaron Finch for twenty acres of heavily timbered land about three miles from Noblesville. He built a log cabin and gradually cleared the land and meanwhile to support his family, did much clearing for others in the vicinity. There was no money in the community so his work was paid for in small produce or barter and all together the family lived in a most primitive way. The log cabin, while warm and comfortable was rough in the extreme, with puncheon floor, door of clapboards with wooden hinges, a single glass window and a stick and clay chimney. The clothing for the family was made from the wool and flax which Mrs. Wheeler spun and wove. In 1834 Mr. Wheeler determined to follow the Indian Trail to Fort Wayne, one hundred miles distant, in order to get work there on the Wabash and Erie Canal. Provided with only simple provisions and a blanket to cover him at night, he set out on his journey. He secured the work, receiving $16.00 a month and worked for three months, after which he walked home through the woods. He had earned enough money to buy forty acres of forestland, two and one-half miles east of Noblesville and there he built a new cabin and settled down with his. family. (The county records show that John Wheeler purchased from the. government 40 acres of land described as the SW ¼, SE ¼, Sec. 33, tp.19 N. R. 5 E. on May 7, 1834 and also 62 acres in NE ¼, of Sec. 4, tp. 18 N. R. 5 E. on August 1, 1834; which land now belongs to John G. Heylmann, et aI, and lies along the Clarksville road east of Noblesville.) Industrious and thrifty, he prospered and was able to add to his property until he owned a fine farm of 224 acres. In time be built a frame house and during the later part of their lives he and hls wife enjoyed all the comforts of life. He lived to be 72 years old, passing away at the home August 17, 1880. His wife died April 7, 1881, while visiting her grandchildren, George and Eva Fisher, of Noblesville. Both Mr. and Mrs. Wheeler were converts to the teachings of Alexander Campbell who often journeyed through Indiana in those early days. He founded a church at Noblesville and the Wheelers were among the most interested and sincere members. John Wheeler was a deacon in it for many years. In politics he was a Whig at first but later was a strong Abolitionist. In hls locality he was noted for his sound judgment.

Mrs. Mary (Stoops) Wheeler was in many respects most remarkable character. While she had only an ordinary education, She had an excellent mind and retentive memory and was very well informed for her times. She was especially familiar with the Bible and could quote almost any passage from it. She was really the educator of her children and by her strong character exerted an influence over them to which was largely due their success in the world. Her word was law to them and they all felt the greatest reliance on her judgement. A single incident will illustrate her force of character and ability to dominate a situation instantly. During her husband's absence in Fort Wayne a deer that had been grazed across the back by a bullet sought shelter in Stony Creek near her cabin and was chased into the water by their hound "Tusmer." Mrs. Wheeler seized an ax, rushed out on a log and as the deer came upon her, struck it between the eyes and killed it instantly. Mrs. Wheeler's influence was not confined to her own family, for she had a wonderful knowledge of human nature and became an authority among her neighbors.
