County History
Formed in 1786 from Fayette County, Bourbon County was
named for the royal family of France who aided the colonies in the War of Independence. Bourbon was one of
nine Virginia counties formed before Kentucky became a state in 1792. Twenty-four new counties and parts of
ten other new counties were formed from its original area. The first courthouse was in 1787 in Hopewell
(renamed Paris).
Bourbon County is proud to be a participant of the KyGenWeb. If anyone is interested in

Bourbon County African American Records
The Bourbon Co. African American records were
moved to the Kentucky African American Griots KYGenWeb site. The new site seeks to centralize African American
records in Kentucky and is part of KYGenWeb Special Collection's Project. Please visit this site and
support this effort by donating material.
The Eastern State Hospital Project
This special KyGenWeb project gathers names of residents of Eastern State
Hospital, formerly the Eastern State Lunatic Asylum, there prior to 1956. The hospital cemetery may hold
up to 10,000 unmarked graves. Before the registration of deaths in 1911, records are extremely difficult to
find.
