Do you know anything about the cemetery where we believe John and Mary Clark are buried? Our understanding is that descendants from Kentucky returned to this site in 1885 and had this cemetery fence erected. Would you care to connect with other descendants of John and Mary Clark? Some descendants spelled the name Clarke.
I am a fourth great-grandson of John and Mary Clark. John Clark (1745-1819) was one of the early settlers in Campbell County having purchased a large tract of land in what was then Bedford County in 1779. John Clark was a grandson of Christopher Clark of Louisa County, son of Micajah Clark also of Louisa County, and a first cousin of John Lynch. He was a Captain in the Revolutionary War, was one of the original Trustees of the City of Lynchburg and a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 1785 to 1793. Their home was known as Lime Kiln.
John and Mary Clark had the following children:
1, John Clark, Jr. who eventually moved to Allen County, KY.
2, Micajah Clark, moved to Simpson County, KY.
3, Mary Clark, died at age three.
4, Judith Clark, married Samuel Moorman, a cousin, lived at Walnut Hill, the adjoining farm.
5, Matthew Clark, died in infancy.
6, Mary Clark married her cousin David Clark, son of Christopher Clark.
7, Tucker Woodson Clark, moved to Logan County, KY.
8, Elizabeth Clark, married Matthew Martin.
9, Martha Clark, died at age three.
10, James Clark, moved to Clark County, KY.
11, Edward Bolling Clark, moved to Logan County, KY.
12, William Clark, married Elizabeth Winston, lived in Albemarle County and was a member of the VA House of Delegates.
The photos are of the cemetery where we believe John Clark and other family members are buried. Note: the name is sometimes spelled "Clarke".
The cemetery is located at the corner of Lawyers Road and Missionary Manor Road (old Waterlick Road). Clarks Road which is nearby is named for the family.
The cemetery is approximately 15 by 20 feet and enclosed by an iron fence erected in 1885.
In addition to John Clark, others we believe to be buried in this cemetery are:
1. Mary Moore (1748-????), wife of John Clark.
2. Christopher Henderson Clark (1767-1828) who was a prominent attorney, a member of the Virginia House of Delegates in 1790 and a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1804 to 1806.
3. John "Captain Jack" Leftwich (1783-1833) who was an extensive planter and a Captain in the Virginia Militia. He was the only child of Major General Joel Leftwich and the father of Joel Breckinridge Leftwich who was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates 1859 to 1861 and 1883 to 1887, a Lt. Colonel during the Civil War and who is buried nearby in the Moorman family cemetery at Walnut Hill.
4. Sarah "Sallie" Walton Leftwich (1783-1829), wife of "Captain Jack" Leftwich and grand-daughter of Colonel William Leftwich.
There are additional family members we believe to be buried in the cemetery and we are currently reviewing possible identities.
Several of the descendants of John and Mary Clark are currently working with VDOT to stabilize the ground on the side of the cemetery that has been eroding and we plan to restore the iron fence.
