F rom 'The Heritage of Wi se Co, Virginia,' by Charles Garrison: 'Duri ng t he Civil War, Dick was ki lled and his house was burned by a memb er or memb ers of a family with whi ch he had previously had trouble. O ne story is th at the trouble involv ed the theft of one or more horses th at belonged to D ick. The thieves app arently stole the horse (or horse s) for sale to the [U nion] army. Dick 's widow fled to her family's hom e, near what is now Keok ee in neighbori ng Lee Co, with Pearl and Pearl 's younger brother. Pearl w as about five y ears old at the time. Dick Mor ris is buried at Keokee. 'Additional informa tion on Richard Morris is pro vided by the Big Stone G ap Post (May 12, 190 2), which states that Richa rd Morris shot and killed J ohn Garrison (no re lation to the present auth or) in 1863. According to T he Post, John Garris on was buried on top of B ig Black Mountain near Crab O rchard. (Crab Orcha rd was the name of the a rea in which the town of Keok ee later was built .) The Post corresponde nt states further: 'Mr. Morris th at done the killi ng was the fath er of R. P. Morris and John W. Morris, w ho lives on t op of Powell Mounta in.'
