Beverly Reach Perry; March 2002; From 'The Denison Herald,' Sunday, O ct ob er 16, 1949 Denison, Grayson Co, Texas: Mrs. Lydia HODGE was fee li ng poo rly and couldn't celebrate much on her birthday. Last winter s he fe ll duri ng the icestorm and lay on the back porch for some time unt il h er daught er discovered her. She contracted pneumonia. She says she j ust d oesn't g et over things like she use to. She was 100 years old yeste rda y. Last ye ar she felt so good after riding the bus to Honey Gro ve to vi sit relativ es and stopping over in Bells to visit with her so n, that s he predicted s he would live to be 100 and more. She still is n ot bedfas t, she can mo ve about the house with the aid of her cane, and d oesn't wa nt any one to h elp her to get up or down. She can do it be st by hersel f. But she can't he lp her daughter Mrs. TUCK, whom she liv es with, with t he dishes and she ca n't wash out her own things as she fo rmerly did. Mr s. HODGE says it looks like she has had nothing but troub le all of her l i fe. She has lived through four wars. But she believes th at the Civ il W ar was the worst of all, for it was fought on our own so il and civili an s, as well as soldiers were killed. Her uncle was kill ed and her fath er w as murdered because his sons had fought with the Uni on army. It was t his war too that started the hard life that Mrs. HODGE h as known f or 88 y ears. Her father was a prosperous man in Harlan C o. KY He had fi ve lar ge productive farms besides the one on which the fa mily lived o n, o ne to be given to each child when he or she married. B ut the bushwhac ke rs burned the family home to the ground and they were f orced to flee th rou gh the snow across the border into Virginia to seek s anctuary with rel ativ es. There was no time to get coats. Her mother to ok off her pettic oa ts to wrap around the baby less than a year old. T he infant died from e xpo sure after the family arrived in Virginia. Th ey never were able to re ga in their land.

Young Lydia had 11 years of happiness, the short life span of her h us ba nd William Sampson HODGE, whom she married in Virginia. After his d ea th t he 35-year-old widow found herself destitute with four children u nd er 10 y ears of age. The family came to Texas and settled near Bells w he re Mrs. HO DGE lived until three years ago when she came here to ma ke h er home with h er daughter. She educated her children by doing practi cal n ursing.

While Mrs. HODGE is forced to walk with a cane she is still remark ab le f or her age. Her hearing is good and she does not wear glasses. Mr s. H ODGE's children are Vestie STONE, John HODGE, Lewis HODGE, a nd Mr s. TUC K. From Carol Tucker, Sanger, Tesas, 1998: 'When Lydia w as a young girl h er f ather died. According to an interview on Lydia's 10 0th birthday, th is is t he story she told about her father dying: They w ere said to li ve in Harl an Co, Kentucky which was a very ruff (sic) coun ty to live i n. After the C ivil War, the Yankees took land from the south erners. Richa rd was shot a nd killed as his family fled for their liv es in a wagon. Bus hwhackers burn ed the family home to the ground and th ey were forced to fl ee through t he snow across the border into Virgin ia to seek sanctuary wi th relative s. There was no time to get coats. H er mother, Ellen, took o ff her pettico ats to wrap around the baby, Jes s, who was less than a ye ar old. The infa nt died from exposure after t he family arrived in Virgini a. They never we re able to regain their lan d'.

Lydia was said to be a large woman of Swedish descent. It was sa id of Ly di a, 'She saw the transition from fireplace cooking to that of t he gas ra ng e; from pine knot lights to the electric brilliance of toda y; from sp ri ng water to piped convenience of the present. She has ridd en everythi ng fr om an oxcart to a railroad train.' Lydia lived to be 1 01 years old a nd liv ed alone [this contradicts the newspaper article, wh ich says she li ved wi th her daughter], and continued to grow a garden. O ne winter she fe ll on i ce and broke both her hips. She died a short ti me later on the 28 th of Apr il 1950. She is buried in Rose Hill Cemete ry in Bells, Texas, ne xt to h er son, John Calaway and his wife. Lydia 's daughter Alpha and h er husba nd Mr. Tuck are buried there also.'

When his father was murdered and h is hom estead burned, 'Uncle Pearl' remem bered his little red cap being t hrown i nto the fire by the marauders. From 'The Heritage of Wise Co, Virg inia ,' by Charles Garrison: 'Pearl enjo yed hunting and riding in the mou ntain s, and was an expert marksman. Appar ently his knowledge of the moun tai ns made him a valuable coal prospecto r, and the Stonega Coke and Co al Com pany hired him to work with the compan y's engineers and geologist s. He li ved for many years in Appalachia, ne ar the present Appalachia Hi gh Schoo l, and later moved to Big Stone Gap, w here he purchased sever al acres ea st of the L&N depot, near the point whe re the north and sou th forks of t he Powell River converge. About 1927, Pea rl suffered a stro ke while he w as in the mountains. He was paralyzed and p laced in the com pany hospit al at Stonega. He recovered almost fully, walki ng with crutch es for a ti me and later with a cane. Another possible birth date is Apr il 27, 1862 Fa mily lore has 'Uncle Pearl' b. in Wise Co, but it's more li ke ly he w as b. in Lee Co, as the marriage record states. From The Big S to ne Gap Post ; Morris learned his craft in laboratory of na ture by Ho wa rd E. Cummins, special writer; E. (sic) Pearl Morris was a mou ntain m an w ho worked out his talents within the great circle of his God-gi ven n atur al talents. The story of

Uncle Pearl'' Morris is representati ve of a time when men and women f ul ly understood that there are things kno wable things unknowable. The k now able things were worthy of spending a pe rson's time and strength o n. T he unknowable was a waste of time and energ y. When a brief sket ch of t he life of E. (sic) Pearl Morris was present ed by the Appalach ia Cultur al Arts Council of Appalachia, several membe rs of the audien ce who are de scendants of the famous

prospector extraord inary'' were in attendance. After the show, they of fe red a more detail ed version of their famous ancestor's intelligence a nd w isdom. The highe st peak of the mountains where E. (sic) Pearl Morr is wal ked during his li fe served to enhance the highest peaks of his kno wled ge of coal. Wherev er he walked, he understood what was hidden ther e, o ut of sight and benea th his feet. The unschooled geologist and surve yor d id not attend the b ig universities as did some of his contemporari es w ho came to this ar ea to develop the coal industry, such as John K. T agger t, John C. Oliphan t, J. P. Wolfe (see reminiscences of a Surveyor a nd Civ il Engineer, 193 1, by J. P. Wolfe) and David M. Lipps.
Morris was employed by some of the intellectual gian ts of h is ti me -- men with many degrees, schooled in university laborato ries. Y et ma ny of the puzzling problems and solutions were unravel ed by a man w ho nev er wore a university cap and gown, but learned his cr aft in the uni vers al laboratory of nature. Mildred Carroll of Big Sto ne Gap has writt en ( in a local historical publication) that Morris boug ht a piece of la nd in t he western end of town. When the highway was bui lt between Big Sto ne Gap a nd Pennington Gap, it ran directly through t he middle of his prop erty. Car roll writes:

Oh, they paid him what they considered a fair price for t he half they t oo k. But he kept the land in the bend of the river becau se he had bui lt h is house on the slight knoll that sloped gently down to t he river. '' O ne of the interesting stories told by Mildred Carroll (and often r e- to ld by local historians) is the

airport story.'' Carroll writes:

The re was a stretch of flat land just across the river, and to quote (l oc al w riter and newspaper editor) Bill Hendricks,
after trains and cars came pl ans,' and that was the best spot for a run wa y. But when the planes took o ff they barely cleared Pearl's chimney.''
The vibrations from the low-flying planes shook the windows and d is lo dged mud from the chimney. The story gets better.

Uncle Pearl'' would ru sh outside his house,

cussing a blue streak,'' and the pilot just smil ed and waved. One da y, o ne crashed on take-off and landed in Pearl's corn field, and the pil ot wal ked away, barely injured, with only a few bruis es and cuts, and ma de h is way across the river. Later, some men return ed to collect the re mai ns of the plane. They were surprised to see Morr is sitting near the p lan e. Morris was holding his rifle.

You will not to uch your plane till you pay for my corn,'' E. (sic) P ea rl Morris warned t he interlopers. They did not question a man who ma de h is own rifle, a nd a man who had the ability to

surely hit what he aimed at.'' Morr is is remembered for declaring t ha t, at least, there was one of his cornfi elds which paid off substanti al ly more than the others, and with far le ss work. Morris was born du ri ng the Civil War and grew up in the mountai ns of Southwest Virgini a. So me accounts claim that he was born on Powell M ountain, near Big Sto ne Ga p, the son of Richard D. Morris, who was kill ed during the civil w ar in S cott County.
Exeter, once known as Pigeon Creek, however, is given cred it f or t he birthplace of the great prospector. Morris died on December 2 2, 19 40, w earing his trusted hat and his well-traveled mountain boot s. Mo rr is is not only remembered for his uncanny scientific knowled ge of whe re co al could be found without digging for it, but for his li fe in its re lati on to himself. Here was a man who truly realized th at in everythi ng whi ch had life -- or had once been a part of life -- th ere was a kinsh ip to h imself. He knew that the coal resting beneath t he soil, on the mo untai ns he knew so well, had obtained a loftier fo rm of life in the begin ning.. .. [Last 12 paragraphs omitted]

Part 2; Morris' powers extended beyond the known senses by Howard E. C um mi ns, special writer;
By most accounts of local storytellers, historians and

fellow geolo gists,'' R. Pearl Morris was not an ordinary man. The more -t han-six-fo ot mountain man was born with a strong back, a good constitu ti on and a mir aculous mute sense of smell -- a gift which did not req ui re a great de al of words. This was only one of his extra-sensory po we rs -- the power ex tending beyond the known senses.

Uncle Pearl,'' as he was known, was ab le to smell, hear and see whe re co al could be found. From early boyhood, M orris started studying t he l ay of the land, the rises and the dips, the cr evices, the very chara ct er and condition of the earth's makeup. He was a ble to describe t he con formation of the ground, the very nature and clo se connections exi sting b etween the influences of the climate, the natur al resources and t opograp hy of the land.
More importantly, he carried a living map within his he ad as to t he l ocation of where coal lay hidden. Up until the year 191 0, Morris w as a pr acticing farmer. He was a quiet, resourceful man, n ot given to sma ll tal k, but his neighbors and friends spread the word th at if anyone wa nt ed to know where coal was,

Uncle Pearl'' could find it. When he we nt to work for the Stonega Co ke a nd Coal Company, the experts soon discove red that no other pers on in the ir employment could match the natural insti ncts of R. Pearl Mor ris. T he late Brownie Polly, Sr., who was producti on manager with the S tonega C oke and Coal Company, used to tell the sto ry of how he and Morr is walk ed across the mountains from Stonega to Dunba r, looking for coa l. It w as in the time of Morris's life when his itchi ng feet and his wa nderlus t, combined with his keen extra-sensory powers, w ere at their pea k.
It was at a time when he obeyed the whispering beyond the moun ta in s, and when he obeyed them, coal could be detected. The man, who s po ke on ly when there was something important to say, stopped in his tr ac ks on a r emote spot and stood there in silence. When we hear this st or y, again a nd again, we imagine seeing the two men, standing the re on a br ight, earl y, summer morning, surrounded by purple and white rh ododendro n, trilliu m, May apple, hepatica and the pink-whitish blosso ms of mounta in laure l. (This imagined scene is based upon an actual pho tograph wi th R. Pea rl Morris standing on a low hill with what appea rs to be a lar ge grow th of rhododendron towering over his tall frame .) Morris's lon g, whi te beard is highlighted by the dark suit coveri ng his broad fram e. He hol ds a cane in his left hand, but stands tall a nd erect, peering d irectly in to the camera. In the distance, far beyo nd a cluster of bush es and a scat tering of unidentified ground covering s, is a towering mount ain in full ve getation. It is a rambunctious pictu re of a man almost domi nating the beau tiful and expressive landsca pe in the background. Th is is the image of Mor ris which most of us ha ve today: a man in full inte rcommunication with h is surroundings.
As the story goes, and as the tale is told, after being pass ed do wn f rom Brownie Polly over the many years, the two men stood the re in com ple te silence. Then the great geologist spoke:

Here it is.'' In the tradi tion of the self-reliant, self-taught, self- in structed mountain men of Mor ris's era, the object of all missions, spe cul ations and expeditions -- whe ther they be far or near -- was form ed to es tablish and broaden the w ay of life during the time in which th ey live d. The mountain man's world h ad more than ample room for chang e. Duri

Uncle Pearl's'' career as

prospector extraordinary,'' he worked closely with James M. Hodge, a w el l- known geologist from the East.
Working with Hodge, Morris soon learned to use the technic al n am es of the strata he found by seeing, smelling and hearing. To h is cre di t, he never acquiesced and placed his instinctive knowledge of g eolo gy bel ow that which was found in books and taught in universitie s. As t he sto ry is told, Morris stormed into the office of John K. Tag ga rt in a rage,

spitting fire'' and protesting that an engineer had questioned his a bi li ty to find coal without digging for it.

I resign, sir,'' he shout ed at Taggart. (In June of 1890, Tagga rt ca me to the Virginia Coal and Iron Company fr om Connellsville, Pa ., as gene ral superintendent to take charge of the pro perty, succeedi ng General Aye rs.) Taggart tried to pacify the angry mount ain man and b egged him to re consider.

Uncle Pearl'' held his ground a nd did not give in. He had resign ed a nd that was that. There was no givi ng in for this proud man on wh om Tagga rt depended for his uncanny expertis e. After Morris had tak en a seat a nd calmed down, Taggart said,

All righ t, but make sure you're at work on Monday morning.'' On the f ol lowing Mo nday morning, E. (sic) Pearl Morris arrived on time for wo rk a nd all was f orgiven. The upstart, university-trained engineer ke pt o ut of

Uncle Pear l's'' sight for the remainder of the day.
The Appalachia Cultural Arts Council will present a progr am on R. P ea rl Morris for the second time during Railroad and Coal Days/ Appalach ia Reu nion 2000 in August.

From the Big Stone Gap Post; The Appalachia Cultural Arts Council wi ll p re sent a variety of short plays dealing with the lives of famous a nd inte res ting former and present members of the Appalachia area. Amo ng them a re . .. E. (sic) Pearl Morris (legendary local geologist).. .. To get to t he ce metery where Pearl MORRIS is buried, nearly as so on as you get to Ex eter ( coming from Appalachia) turn left at a white ho use that sits a litt le w ay off the road (this might have been a mine sup erintendent's house b ecau se it is a little larger and sits farther off t he road than most ho us es in Exeter). From The Big Stone Gap Post: R. PEARL MORRIS DIES SUDDENLY ; Aged Big S to ne Gap Citizen Suffers Atta ck While Walking About Home Sunday. Ric ha rd Pearl Morris, 78, widely kno wn throughout this section where he w as em ployed 35 years as coal prospect or for the Stonega Coke and Coal Co mpan y, died very suddenly at his ho me in Big Stone Gap Sunday afternoo n. H is body was found a few yards fr om the house by members of the fami ly af ter he had been missing a few min utes. It is presumed he suffer ed a hea rt attack. Mr. Morris was bo rn on Powell Mountain near Big Sto ne Gap, b eing a son of Richard D. Morri s, who was killed during the Civ il War in S cott County. About 10 years a go he suffered a stroke of paral ysis whi le at work near Dunbar from whi ch he never fully recovered. Howe ver, M r. Morris was able at times to vis it town [sic] and chat with h is many fr iends. Surviving are his wife, Mr s. Margaret Morris, a so n, J. W. Morr is of Exeter, and two daughters, Mr s. C. T. Moore of Big St one Gap and Mr s. Florence McConnell of Penningt on Gap. Funeral servic es were held at t he home Tuesday afternoon at 1 o'c lock in charge of t he Rev. Dan Robinett e. Interment was made to the Exet er cemetery.

From 'The Heritage of Wise County and the City of Norton 1856-1993': R ic ha rd Pearl MORRIS II, by Mildred Carroll, Big Stone Gap, VA 24219: ' Bo rn dur ing the Civil War, growing up in the untamed mountains of S.W. V irg inia, P earl MORRIS was a rugged individual. I've heard him tell of tu rni ng ov er a rock when he heard a buzz and killing 18 to 20 rattlesnake s. Ye ar aft er year his beard grew longer and whiter because he never act ual ly shave d. He never had a mind to buy a rifle, said he could make a b ett er gun th an they sold, and make them he did. The S. W. Virginia Muse um h as a ball a nd cap muzzle loader, about 50 caliber, he made. There 's alwa ys been so me question as to what Uncle Pearl did best, shoot a g un or fi nd coal. Wh en he went to work for the coal company, they soon le arn ed no one could fa ce up coal through the mountain and find outcroppin gs l ike Uncle Pear l. He would find the coal and they would follow with t he te chnical knowled ge of surveying and mapping. Uncle Pearl did a l ot of pros pecting with Jam es HODGE, a well known geologist from the Eas t. It was n ot long until he c ould point out strata and give the technic al name for i t. But he never d id place his instinctive knowledge below t hat of book a nd instrument. N ot long after he went to work for what lat er became Stone ga Coke and Co al Co, he bought land in the western e nd of Big Stone Ga p. When they bui lt the road from Big Stone Gap towa rd Pennington Ga p, it ran through the m iddle of Pearl MORRIS' land. O h, they paid him wh at they considered a fa ir price for the half they too k. (Later, the to wn honored him by nami ng a short street after him). B ut he kept the la nd in the bend of the riv er because he had built the ho use on a slight kn oll that sloped gently do wn to the river. It was a lar ge house for that t ime with five rooms a nd a root cellar (basement today ), with a wrap-arou nd porch. On the wide st corner of the porch was a wat er pump. Now that w as a luxury, a cover ed water pump on your porch.
There was a stretch of flat land just across the river and to q uo te B ill Hendricks 'after tra ins and cars came planes', and that w as t he be st spot for a runway. But when the planes too k off they bare ly cle ared P earl's chimney. The vibrations shook the windows and even d islo dg ed da bs of mud from the chimney. I've seen him run outside shaki ng h is fist a nd cussing a blu e streak, and the pilot just smiled and wa ve d. One day o ne crashed on take off and landed i n Pearl's cornfiel d. T he pilot walk ed away with just cuts and bruises and made his way b ac k ac ross the rive r. But when they returned to collect their plane, t here s at Pearl wi th hi s rifle. He told them 'You will not touch your p lane ti ll you pay f or my corn'. I guess the y figured if he could ma ke his o wn rifle he cou ld surely hit what he aimed at. At least, h e sa id, th at cornfield paid o ff with less work than the others. December 2 2, 194 0, the prosp ector ext raordinary fell dead. He had his hat and bo ots o n, and he probably wou ld have wanted it that way.' \\\\\

From Deborah Clarkston webpage, 1998 - She lists Eliza as 'Louis a, bo rn 18 42 in Lee Co. VA'. 'Louiza the wife of Edmund Witt now of Mad ison C o. Ark ansas' was named as one of eight children of Mary Morris Cla rksto n, wi fe of James M. Clarkston, in a deed dated 10 Nov 1888, Harl an Co. K Y, rega rding two tracts of land (50 acres & 80 acres on Clover F ork of Cu mberla nd River, Harlan Co. KY) that had belonged to 'the late E lias Morr is of L ee Co. VA'.

Holly Fee, Correspondent, 'Harlan Daily Enterprise', 12 Sep 1990, wr it es t hat Eliza married in Harlan Co. KY in 1864

Both Isaac and Edmond enlisted (March 1, 1865) in the Union Ar my (C o. 'F ', Three Forks Battalion) in Harlan Co. KY, which may expla in why t he fami lies left the Crab Orchard/Big Stone Gap area of Virgini a, a Confe derate s tronghold. Pansy Witt Elliott remembers hearing her gr andmothe r, Eliza, te ll the story of how she and Edmond spent a night hi di ng in a thick cedar t ree while enemy soldiers searched nearby; aft er th at experience Edmond we nt to Harlan Co. KY and enlisted.

1882 - The Witt family moves west! Sybil Vodrazka, a Witt descenda nt th ro ugh Isaac & Mary Witt handed down this family history / accou nt of t he mo ve to Madison Co, Arkansas: The Witt family left Kentuc ky 'betwe en 1883- 1887' - (birth of daughter Celia Witt Shipp's chi ld in Octob er of 188 3, in Madison Co. Arkansas, and Eliza's son Daniel 's accou nt of the tra in trip from Kentucky to Arkansas at the a ge of 4, as to ld to his daughte r, Pansy Witt Elliott, seem to confirm th at the family l eft Kentucky arou nd 1882 ) - 'the men by covered wagon s, the women & chil dren following lat er by train.' Eliza, Edmond and th eir children, includ ing my great-grandm other Celia were among those w ho settled in Madison C o. AR.

All the grandchildren who remember Eliza Witt invariably say the sa me t hi ng about her, i.e., that she was the sweetest, kindest woman th ey kne w, al ways patient with everybody, and they can't remember ever hea ring h er rai se her voice in anger. They remember that she was always bus y. S he rais ed strawberries, dried fruit for the winter, made kraut, a nd pickl ed bean s. She had her pumpkin patch 'up on the bench' at her ho me outsi de of Co mb (in Madison Co. Arkansas). Eliza was a quiet woma n, accordi ng to her g reat-granddaughter Alta Haskins Faubus (former fir st lady of A rkansas ). Alta remembers watching her make thread from cot ton bats ' to croch et into socks and other such things'. Pansy Witt Ellio tt said th at her gra ndmother would show the children how she spun thre ad on the han d-made spin ning wheel that Edmond had made for her. Alta a lso remembe rs helping h er peel pumpkins. Eliza would cut them in half, t ake out t he seeds, cut in to strips, peel, and run a needle and thread th rough ea ch strip. These st rips could then be hung up to dry.

After Edmond died, Eliza lived with her daughter, Martha Ellen and son -i n- law, Calvin Haskins, first in Madison Co, Union Township (1910 Mad is on C o. census), then in the Stony Point Community on Hwy. 112 (Fayette vil le, A rkansas), and lastly on Sugar Creek near Pea Ridge, north of Rog er s, in Be nton Co.AR. A granddaughter, Ethel Haskins Lockhart tel ls us th at 'Eliz a, at the age of 93 fell while going down the cellar st airs to g et a pump kin for one of her visitors to take home, and never re ally recov ered fr om the broken hip she sustained in the fall.'

Pansy Witt Elliott remembers that her grandmother used a kitch en c ha ir as a walker to get herself out to the garden, where she wou ld s it on t he ground and pull weeds! Eliza Witt was not the kind of wom an w ho could s tand to be idle!

The chi ldren of Henry Wise Clarkston have said that their grandfa ther 's name w as was Zackarack or Zachariah; (b). The family Bible in t he possessi on of one of Henry's children sho ws a 'ZT' born on July 4, 18 54, being t he same birth date as Zachari ah T.
