This Richard Reynolds who married Elizabeth Williams prior to 1685 w as k no wn as Richard Reynolds, Jr. in later deeds and probate records ind ica ti ng that he was the son of Richard Reynolds, Sr. According to a de ed d at ed 1693, which is listed below, we learn the following: 7 Feb 169 3, Ric ha rd Reynolds, Jr., and his wife, Elizabeth, daughter of George Wi lliam s, li sted in deed between them and Pharoah Cobb and his wife Elizab eth, r ecord ed 9 Feb 1693 (Doc.#135i). Notice that this deed lists this R icha rd Reynol ds who married Elizabeth Williams as Richard Reynolds, J r. Anoth er deed a nd probate record dated in 1700 lists: 6 Apr 1700, Is le of Wig ht County Wi lls and Administrations, Bk. 1, p. 81; Isle of Wig ht County D eeds, B k. 1, p.306; Richard Reynolds and his wife Elizabeth b ought from G eorge Wi lliams 100 acres in the Lower Parish (part of deed d ated 10 Apr 1 671 of Ph aroah Cobb to George Williams, Taylor [Williams ], father of t he said Geor ge Williams), recorded 9 Apr 1700, Witness ed by Arthur Smit h, Thomas Smi th and Mathew Lowry (Doc.#135r).

These two records appear to refer to Richard Reynolds, Jr., and h is wi fe E lizabeth Williams. Note that in the probate record dated 20 O ct 16 85 th at Richard Reynolds, Jr., appears as a witness with Ann Tullau gh a nd Isabe ll Williams. Name and residence patterns suggest that Isabe ll Wil liams m ay have been a sister to Richard Reynolds, Jr.?s wife, Eliz abeth W illiam s. In reference to Ann Tullaugh, in 1684, Richard Reynold s, Jr.?s f athe r, Richard Reynolds, Sr., and Robert Coleman were list ed as securiti es f or James Tullaugh who was the administrator for the es tate of John Lo ckhar t: 9 Sep 1684, Isle of Wight County Wills and Admini strations, B k. 1, p. 5 7; Richard Reynolds, Sr., listed as security alo ng with Robe rt Coleman f or the estate of John Lockhart, administration r equested by J ames Tullau gh (Doc.#132y). 1689, Isle of Wight County Deeds, Bk. 1, p.25; Elizabeth Reynold s, si st er of Richard Reynolds, listed as wife of John Nevill (Doc.#138d)
This deed reveals that Elizabeth Reynolds, sister of a Richard Reyno ld s, m arried John Nevill, prior to 1689, probably about 1688 just p ri or to the f ollowing land dispute. Within the next few years Richard Re yno lds and Jo hn Nevill appear is subsequent records as follows: 3 Apr 1 69 0, Isle of Wig ht County Deeds, Bk. 1, p.25; Richard Reynolds and Jo hn Neu ill [Neville] i nvolved in a division of a tract of land, Witnesse s: Jose ph Woory and Samu el Swann, recorded 9 Apr 1690, signed in the pre sen ce of James Benn, Willi am West, Will Godwin, James Tullaugh... The listing of James Tul laugh as a w itness in 1690 to the divisi on of land between Richard Reyno lds and his b rother-in-law John Nevill sug gests that this is the same Ri chard Reynold s, Jr., who married Elizabeth W illiams is the same individu al who appear ed as a witness of James Tullaugh ?s will in 1698.

As Joseph, S enior's two adult sons, Samuel, aged abo ut 24 a nd just married, and Benja min, aged about 22 and unmarried, di ed at abo ut the same time as the sa me year, it would appear that some su ch epidem ic as smallpox, typhoid fev er, etc., was sweeping over the tow n. On March 26, 172 8, the widow Abigail leased her sha re of h er late husband's property to h er 'eldest son (probably step-son) J oseph ,' signing by mark.(+) John (2 3) deeded to Joseph (26) in 1717 for ú2 par cel of land taken up acc ordi ng to town grant of an acre to ú4 estate, wh ich is ú43 14 00. She was a co-administrator of Joseph 's esta te in 17 27. She was the 'widow Abigail Reynolds' who joined the Se cond ( West) Soci ety Congregational Church, Nov. 24 (or Dec. 16?), 1728. R ecor ds of the sa me Church show that she married there John Benedict of No rwa lk, Conn., No v. 19, 1729. (+) A reliable correspondent in Californi a, wi thout access to notebooks, w rites that it was possible Joseph had b ut o ne wife, as she thought she had seen the name wri tten, Mrs. Abiga il (Fi nch) Rundell, which would make it possible to acce pt the March, 17 28, it em of her 'eldest son' as correct. At the last mome nt we are un ab le to verify this, but record it for future investigation.

We do not know the name of John's w if e, as she had died before him and w as not mentioned in his will of 1 73 2. His first daughter was obviously nam ed for his own mother who h ad be en Judith Palmer; but his second, Lydia, m ay have been named for Jo hn's w ife, the mother. In Stamford Probate recor ds we find mention of 'L ydia Fe rris, alias Reynolds, late of Greenwich, si ster of Joshua Ferr is and Ru th Peck.' As this Jonathan Reynolds was some twenty-two years young er than h is cous in Jonathan, there is much less confusion between th em in the o ld recor ds than between their respective brothers John who we re more ne ar ly of an age. By the appointing of Administratrix, his wif e, and admini str ator, her brother, Samuel, we are sure Jonathan died bef ore 1710. We k now of only one child. Yet there are two later referenc es in the Green wi ch records, which if they have been correctly copi ed by previous work er s, are very puzzling. On April 1, 1731, 'Joseph Rey nolds, son unto Jo hn Re ynolds, deceased,' gives half his property to 's on Hezekiah.' And ag ain, J any. 3, 1711, 'Jonathan Reynolds buys of broth er David half of my f ather 's rights in Indian Fields, it being half rig ht of Mr. John Reynol ds in th ese fields.' These two records should be ex amined on the sp ot in Greenwic h. Our copyist may have erred. We belie ve Jonathan and Ma ry (Mead) Reynol ds had only one child.

The Genealogical Dict io na ry of Maine and New Hampshire says he was the son of William Runne ll s. How ever, the naming of his children make it more likely he was t he s on of J ob and Sarah (Crawford). Her father's name was Stephen and Sa mu el had chil dren named Stephen, Job and Sarah. Can anyone clear this up ?
Ben Myers <bambendor@bendnet.com> reply to Warren Stearns Any dat es or a t imeline of your Runnells? I have a first generation Samue l, wi th sons St ephen & Job & Samuel. Job was married to a Sarah (maid en na me unknown.)
Lyman Lowrey <lwlowrey@aol.com> response; I'm a little out of date on re se arch and I see this discussiom on Sa m. Is there information confirmi ng re lationship of Sam, John, and Job as t heorized in M.T. Runnells boo k. Is J ohn the grandson of William and who mi ght his father be. As you m ight ha ve guessed I'm a descendant of John.
Warren Stearns; Samuel Runnells was born about 1674, probably at Port Ro ya l, Nova Scotia a nd died 27 Oct 1745. He became the administrator of h is g randfather, Willi am's, estate and also his uncle John's in 1721. Wil li am had three sons, Jo b, William and John. John died without child re n, so I'm trying to find whe ther Job or William was Samuel's father.
Ben Myers; We appear to have the same Runnells Family, but unfortun at ly I can go ba ck no farther than Samuel born 1674. His marriage to Ab iga il Middleton pr oduced Samuel ll, which line I follow.

Ben Myers; The fifth son of Samuel was Job. I think a Job was the fa th er of Samuel b ut confused records might also indicate a Job was an U nc le of Samuel a nd a Job was a brother to Samuel.

Ben Meyers of Bend, Oregon; The Job you list is considered by tradi ti on & legend to have been a broth er to Samuel,'settling on the oth er si de of the pond' from Samuel and spel ling the name differently.
