General Notes: The History and Descendants of John and Sarah Reynolds ; Autho r: Ma ri on H. Reynolds; Call Number: CS71.R464 1. ELIZABETH REYNOLDS: on ly kno wn daughter of the emigrants John and Sara h, was born about 16 35 in Water town or Wethersfield. As her mother is supp osed to be the 'Sa rah Reynol ds aged twenty,' who came alone in the ship El izabeth the la st of Apri l, 1634, and as her father was supposed to be alre ady in Water town at th at time, it is scarcely likely that Elizabeth was bo rn befo re 1635. Alv ah Reynolds of Altona, Ill., suggests this daughter w as chri stened to com memorate the above name of the ship in which her moth er ca me over. Of h er death we know only that she died after Jany. 2, 166 4, a nd before Ju ly 25, 1705. Elizabeth may well have been younger than Jon at han and bo rn about 1637.

Peter was the son of Jeffr ey Ferri s, o ne of the seven original proprietors of Greenwich, who ha d, like Jo hn Reyn olds, removed from Watertown to Wethersfield, and to St amford in 1 641. B ut Jeffrey settled within the bounds of Greenwich, whe re he died M ay 31, 1 666. Peter had been made Freeman of Stamford, 1662; Representative to the G en er al Court (Colonial Legislature), 1667. After the death of Elizabe th Rey nol ds, Peter married, July 25, 1705, Mrs. Ruth Weed--fifty-one yea rs h ad elap sed between his first and second weddings! Peter died Sept. 2 8, 17 06. Of t he fol lowin g, Mead in History of Greenwich, states that Peter was the th ird chi ld a nd was born June 20, 1660; and that Elizabeth was the secon d, b. No v. 2 8, 1658, and d. May 2, 1660. Ange ll was b. in En gland about 1620; settled in Greenwich and d. th ere Apri l, 1706; witness J uly, 1640, to the Indian deed of Old Town Gree nwi ch to Robert Feaks and Da niel Patrick and was one of original patente es n amed in patent to To wn of Greenwich, May, 1665. He was son of Robe rt Heus ted, b. probably C o. Somerset, England, 1596; sailed for Massachu setts 16 35, where he remain ed a few years, and then removed to Stamfor d, Con n. He was also witne ss to Indian deed just mentioned, and was gran ted la nd at Stamford, Oct ., 1642, and d. there 1652, owning land in bo th Stamfo rd and Greenwich. H is widow, Elizabeth, survived him and d. Sta mford, 165 4. From the time the father of Jonathan came from Wethersfie ld to Stamfor d, 1 641, until about 1653, Jonathan seems to have liv ed in Stamford; a nd he w as then probably a youth, if the above assumed d ate of birth is an ywhere n ear correct. About 1653 Greenwich received lar ge additions from S tamfor d, and among these earliest settlers was this J onathan2. Oct. 14, 1 65 7, he witnessed a deed in Stamford, Joshua Knapp a nd Wm. Hoobert. Aft er h is removal he appears but once in the Stamford to wn records: 'Jan y. 7, 1666: Wm. This W illiam Grimes at that ti me was an 'inhabitant' of Greenwich as we re t he witnesses, 'Renolds and K napp.' Grimes, as we shall see in our acco u nt of John2 Reynolds, broth er of Jonathan, later, must have 'got religi on ,' for later on he handsome ly redeemed himself by his bequest of his l an ds for town purposes. He act ually named the Rev. Eliphalet Jones, w ho abo ve complained of him, and Jo hn Reynolds, brother of his other accu se r, as trustees of this philanthro pic gift, which proves he bore no ha rd fe elings. Grimes' will is print ed on page 33 in this book. In Greenwi ch Town Records is an account of t he first town meeting, Feb y. 5, 166 4, at which it was proposed to divi de the 'common lands by a ru le of pro portion, according to what each man 's estate shall be visab le . . .' T he 'Seven Proprietors' are named as fo llows: 'Jeffre Ferris, Se nr.; Josh ua Knapp, Senr.; Joseph Ferris; Jonath an Reynolds; Angell Heuste d; Jo hn Mead, Senr.; John Hobbe.' The family of John2 and Judah (Palmer) Reynolds apparently dates a bo ut t en years later than that of his brother Jonathan. All of the chil dr en of b oth brothers were born in Sound Beach (then Stamford) and Green wic h, Con n. The mention of the ages of the children of Jonathan2 in t he sett leme nt of his estate in 1673 enables us to set the years of the ir birt h. Marion Reynol ds was as sis ted in compiling the family data by Mrs. Anna Rippier. Ma ny recor ds of t he family can be found in the Norwich CT town records. T he RFA is f ortuna te to have had the assistance of Pat Daniels of Dese rt Hot Spri ng s, CA in updating the information on the descendants of Jo hn and Sara h. The First Geneation; This genealogy is an account of John a nd Sarah (Ba cku s) Reynolds and their descendants. Their history is assoc iated with t he ea rly southern Connecticut towns of Saybrook, Lyme and No rwic h. We do not kn ow anything of John prior to 1659, but it seems proba ble t hat he was bo rn in England between 1615 and 1635. In Hotten's lis ts of ea rly immigrants we find the following:
'John Reynolds, aged 23, sailed from, Gravesend, Englan d, A pr il 3, 1635, for St. Christopher's in the 'Paul' of London.'
'John Reinolds. aged 20, and Thomas Reinolds, aged 18, sa il ed M ay 21, 1635, for St. Christophers in the 'Matthew' of London .' We ha ve been puzzled by the mention of an Elizabeth Reynolds of wh om we kn ow n othing else, who married Richard Jennings in New London 't he begin ni ng of June 1678.' Both were immigrants from the Barbados, Brit ish We st Ind ies, and had Samuel b. Mar. 11, 1679; Richard b. 1680; and E linor w ho m. R ichard Manwaring. [Hotten, Original Lists, Immigrants to A merica 1 600-170 0] There is some likelihood that John came to Ameri ca by way of S t. Christ opher's Island in the British West Indies. The re were so many Jo hns among the early Reynoldses of New England that li t tle, however, c an be argued from such disconnected fragments of evide nc e. At this time t here were a John Reynolds, wife Naomi Latimer, in Wet hers field, CT Anoth er John, wife Anne Holbrook, lived in Stoningto n, CT A thi rd John liv ed in Greenwich-Stamford, CT, and another in Ports mouth, N.H. A nother Jo hn Reynolds, evidently an apprentice in Hartfor d, in 1646 was fin ed for h elping to harbor escaped prisoners. One narrat ive of John of Norwi ch rela tes that he came from England in 1635 and set tled at Saybrook. T he da te in this assertion is probably an unsupport ed inference from the re cor ds in Hotten's Immigrants. John Reynolds ear ly lived in that part of Saybr ook on the east side of t he Connecticut Ri ver which is now called Lyme [V ol. II of the NE Hist. Ge n. Reg.]. W itness: Jo hn Tulley, William Ward this 3th December 1659' By trade John Re ynol ds of Norwich was a wheelwright, and he lived in Norwi ch, probably wo rki ng at his trade, some forty-two years. It was this Jo hn Reynolds of No rw ich who with Simon Huntington, Thomas Adgate, John Po st and William Bac k us in October 1663, was made a Freeman at Hartford, t he seat of the co lo nial government. When Norwich was settled in the spring of 1660, Jo hn w as assigned land ne xt to his 'kinsman,' Ensign Thomas Leffingwel l, in t he southeastern pa rt of Norwich. There are several varying descri ptio ns of his land. The ho me lot was laid out in November 1659; the fir st div ision of town lands w as in April 1661. John Reynolds' house, purpo rted ly built in 1659, was sti ll standing in 1928, and was still in the p osses sion of descendants of t he original owner. Since the first chi ld of wh om we have record was born in August 1655, Jo hn Reynolds and Sar ah Back us were married, probably in Lyme, around 165 0. Sarah was rear ed in Ly me and was the daughter of William Backus and h is first wife, wh ose na me is unknown. The first three children of John a nd Sarah Reynold s, and p ossibly the fourth, were born in Lyme, then an out lying pa rt of Saybroo k. The births of eight children are recorded at Norwi ch, th ough without m ention of John's wife. John and Sarah had been about fifte en years in Norw ich when their first so n, John Jr., was murdered by t he Indians. Major Pa lmer of New London wro te on January 29, 1675/76 [Tru mbull, CT Rcds. The Rockw ell boy, then aged between 13 and 16, was lat er found alive. Jo hn Reynol ds was killed January 28, 1675/76. These t wo men were killed on t he ea st side of the Shetucket River not far fr om Norwich. This John J r. of Nor wich was at his death about twenty yea rs old, and so far as we kn ow, unma rried. His brother Joseph Reynolds, t hen about fifteen, was the on ly s on of John and Sarah to marry and car ry on the family in Norwich. John Rey nolds Sr. became a Selectman of Norw ich in 1669. In 1690, accordi ng to ea rly custom, John deeded to his on ly living son, Joseph, half of t he hou se and homelot, and the other ha lf in reversion upon the death of hi mse lf and wife. John Reynolds, the i mmigrant, died at Norwich July 22, 170 2, after livi ng there some forty-t wo years from 1660. On a record dated J anuary 31, 170 1/2, he is mention ed as one of the first settlers 'now surv iving.' His wi ll is dated Ju ly 15, 1702, seven days before his death. T he will mentio ns as survivo rs his wife Sarah, only son Joseph, and four m arried daughter s, Sarah Po st, Mary Lathrop, Elizabeth Lyman and Lydia Mil ler. His house a nd land s, subject only to the widow's right of dower, a nd his farm impleme nts a nd wheelwright's tools he bequeathed to his on ly living son, Josep h, w ho continued all his life in Norwich. At his dea th John owned abo ut 79 a cres or more in Norwich. After naming the widow S arah and son Joseph exec utors, he adds, 'I do ma ke choice of my loving ki nsman Ensign Thomas Lef fingwell an overseer e, to be helpfull to them.' Le ffingwell had been amo ng those who had remov ed with John from Saybro ok to Norwich, and his pro perty in Norwich was ne xt west of John's. A. WILLIAM REYNOLDS was born in Kent, England. Research in English r ec or ds has been unable to locate any source listing William's father. W il li am married 1644-Mar-6, St. Pancras Parish, Chichester, Sussex, En gl an d, to Margaret Exton who was baptized 1625-Feb-5, St. Pancras Par is h, d t. of John & Alis (Fivins) Exton. William is recorded as the Pay ma st er to the Garrison of Chichester. The will of William Reynolds of S t. P anc ras without the East Gate, Chichester, Sussex, 'gent,' dated 1660 -Feb- 18 w as probated 1664-Apr-9 in Prerogative Court of Canterbury, Lond on, wh ich i ndicates he was either a man of property of held land in mo re than o ne ecc lesiastical jurisdiction, or both.
Margaret (Exton) Reynolds' second husband was John Carter. Margaret 's w il l, dated 1684-Dec-8, was probated 1688-Oct-15.
No primary sources have been located to indicate William came to Am er ic a. Since his children's births from 1645-1655 are recorded at Chich es te r, England, and his will, dated 1660, lists his residence as Chiches te r, E ngland, it is very unlikely he immigrated to America.
