These two families are alot alike and they are connected to the sa me fa mi ly ties after Aaron's parents. Two different researchers ca me up wi th t wo different directions from John/William forward. So me of the child ren a re the same and than there are differences. That at the time of his first entering the service of the Unit ed St at es he resided in the County of Caroline and State of Virginia, w he re he w as born and raised. That he was in the battle of Gates' defe at ne ar Camde n, South Carolina, and at the taking and surrender of Lo rd Cornwa llis at L ittle York in Virginia. That the said Bernard Reynold s, after en listi ng in the County of Caroline, Virginia, marched to the c ity of Willi amsbur g, where he joined the Regiment commanded as before st ated from whi ch pla ce his said Regiment was marched to the south in ord er to reinfor ce Charle ston, South Carolina, That in this march he cross ed Taylor's Fer ry on t he Roanoke river, passed through country lying bet ween that poi nt and Hill sborough in NC; from thence he and his regime nt marched to Sal isbury in t he same state, and, after having passed t he last mentioned to wn and march ed about twenty miles towards the poi nt of destination, infor mation was re ceived that Charleston had fallen i nto the hands of the enem y. It is interesting to note that according to the marria ge re co rd of Catherine Reynolds, she married Shadrack Hall on 27 Sep 18 04 in P atr ick Co, Virginia. However, the above court record lists that s he was m arri ed to Shadrack Sloan? Susanna Ferrell, the wife of William F errell, a ppea rs to have been another daughter of Joseph Reynolds, Sr., a nd Sarah P erkin s. The information that Polly Reynolds was married to Ish am Sloan co rreson ds with the Floyd County Power of Attorney listed in t he dee ds as we ll as her Floyd Co, Kentucky marriage record which lists t hat s he marri ed 'Isham Slone' on 26 Oct 1815. The next heir listed for J ose ph Reynold s, Sr., in the Patrick Co, Virginia court record is Willi am Rey nold s. He is the only son of Joseph Reynolds, Sr., listed among t he hei rs of J oseph Reynolds, Sr., who were being sued by Richard, Jam es and Jos eph Reyn olds, Jr., (who also appear to have been other so ns of Joseph Rey nolds, Sr .). This is also the first record which lis ts a Nancy Nolin, wi fe of Steph en Nolin, as an heir of Joseph Reynold s, Sr. Hence, Nancy appe ars to ha ve been a daughter of Joseph Reynold s, Sr., and Sarah Perkins. T hough Flo yd Co, Kentucky marriage records li st that an Elizabeth Reynol ds married W illiam Harris, Jr., on 17 Mar 183 6, this court record indicat es that she w as a different Elizabeth Reynol ds than the daughter of Jose ph Reynolds, Sr ., who went by Betsy Reynol ds and who married Lawrence Slu mb?. Though t he transcribers of this cou rt record were unable to accurate ly decipher t he surname of Lawrence a nd Elizabeth, Floyd Co, Kentucky mar riage recor ds reveal that their surn ame was Stambaugh. Betsy Reynolds, bo rn about 18 03 in Patrick Co, Virgin ia, married Lawrence Stambaugh on 26 M ar 1821 in F loyd Co, Kentucky. Sim ilar to what was suggested for Milly Re ynolds as lis ted above, locati ng the heirs of Joseph Reynolds, Sr., in t he 1850 census es of Virginia a nd Kentucky should reveal their ages (fr om which to calcul ate their bir th years) and birth places.

According to a descenda nt of Milly Reyn ol ds and Jeremiah Moles named Rachel Grace, Milly was li sted as havi ng be en age 65 in the 1850 census of Floyd Co, Virginia. Rac hel further l ists t hat they had eight children and names five of them a s: Thomas, Luci nda, Fl eming, Sarah and Joseph. Subject to further resear ch and verificat ion of R achel Graceís information, it appears Milly a nd Jeremiah Moles na med o ne of their children Joseph after her father, J oseph Reynolds, Sr ., and an other Sarah, after her mother.

According to Floyd Co, Kentucky survey books, ìHamilton Reynoldî fir st o bt ained 50 acres of land on Beaver Creek in 1847. Notice that th is is t he sa me year that Sarah Reynoldsí estate was probated as listed a bove. Un fortun ately, there are no probate records filed in Floyd Coun ty for Sar ah Reynol dís estate. Hence, we searched a statewide index to K entucky pro bate recor ds prior to 1851, but nothing is listed for eith er Joseph or Sa rah Reynol ds (Doc.#43). Though Floyd Co, Kentucky does n ot require intest ate estat es to be probated, in light of the above Pow er of Attorney fil ed in Flo yd County deeds, the administration of Sar ah Reynoldís estate sh ould ha ve been recorded. Hence, we requested th at Floyd County condu ct a sear ch of their court and deed records. Howeve r, they were unab le to locate t he administration records for Sarah Reyno ldís estate or a ny other addition al information regarding this matter.
The earliest Floyd Co, Kentucky survey of land for an individual nam ed R ey nolds was for Joseph Reynolds who obtained 50 acres on Beaver Cree k, w hi ch was recorded in 1834 (Doc.#11c). Name and residence patterns in dica te t hat this was the same Joseph Reynolds who was the husband of Sar ah Re ynold s. Sarah Reynoldís estate was probated in 1847 in Floyd Count y. T he fact t hat this Joseph Reynolds obtained land on Beaver Creek p ri or to 1834, a nd your ancestor, Hamilton Reynolds, married in Floyd Co un ty on 17 Feb 183 4, in the same year the survey was recorded, indicat es th at Hamilton Reyno lds was the son of Joseph and Sarah Reynolds. Noti ce th at Hamilton didn ít purchase land there until thirteen years lat er in 184 7, the same year t hat the estate of Sarah Reynolds was probat ed and he ap pears to have recei ved his inheritance. Hence, Hamilton Reyn olds appea rs to have lived on la nd originally owned by his parents unt il he receiv ed his inheritance in 18 47 from the administration of the es tate of his m other, Sarah Reynolds, t he widow of Joseph Reynolds.
In addition to the above surveys and land records, surveys al so li st th at Hamilton Reynolds obtained 50 acres on Clear Creek in 185 8, 10 42 acr es on Beaver Creek in 1871, and another 235 acres on Beaver C reek l at er in the same year, 1871. (Doc.#11c).
Other Floyd Co, Virginia deeds reveal that there was a John and Marg ar et R eynolds of Crawford Co, Illinois (Doc.#45), who sold 100 a cr es of la nd on Big Paint Creek in 1838 (Doc.#44a). There was also a Jo se ph Reynol ds of Letcher Co, Kentucky (Doc.#46) who sold land on Can ey Fo rk in 1845 ( Doc.#44a). This same Joseph Reynolds then purchas ed 50 acr es on Caney Cre ek in 1846 (Doc.#44). However, neither John or J oseph Reyn olds of Letch er Co appear to have resided in Floyd County f or any leng th of time. Thou gh John and Margaret Reynolds were from Crawf ord Co, Illi nois, they appe ar to have moved there from Floyd Co, Kentuc ky where th ey bought land pri or to 1838. However, there is no reco rd of their origin al purchase of la nd according to Floyd County deeds.
Since Floyd County was created in 1800 from Fleming, Montgomery a nd M as on Counties, it is possible that Joseph and Sarah Reynolds origina lly o bta ined land in one of these counties. However, there are no Jose ph Reyn ol ds listed in any of these counties according to the 1820-1840 c ens us es of Kentucky. In 1810 through 1840, there were Joseph Reynolds re si di ng in Muhlenburg and Lincoln Counties beginning in 1810, but none re si di ng in eastern Kentucky through 1840 (Doc.#37, 38, 39,40). We also se ar ch ed the 1810 census index for NC, but there were no Joseph Reynol ds li st ed (Doc.#34). However, there were listings for J. Reynolds Jr. a nd Sr ., re siding in Guilford Co, NC in 1810.
Since there are no listings for a Joseph Reynolds in NC in 1800-18 10 w hi ch corresponds with your ancestors, we searched the reconstruct ed tax l is ts for Virginia in 1787 and 1810. The 1810 Virginia tax lis ts several J ose ph Reynolds including one of Patrick Co, Virginia (Doc.#5 5g), where J am es Reynolds resided according to the Floyd Co, Kentucky, P ower of Atto rn ey which was filed in connection with the widow of Jose ph Reynolds, i. e. S arah Reynoldís estate. In addition to Joseph, there w ere several oth er Rey nolds families also listed in Patrick Co, Virgin ia in 1810: Richar d, Thoma s, Jesse, George, Moses, Abraham, Thomas and H enry Reynolds (Doc. #55g). The re is a Joseph Reynolds who was tith ed in Henry County in 1787 al ong wi th Mary, Moses, Bartlett, Jesse and D avid Reynolds (Doc.#56d). Noti ce t he similarity of name patterns betwe en the 1810 tax list for Patri ck Coun ty and the 1787 tax list for Hen ry County. This appears to confi rm that t he Reynolds families of Patri ck County resided in that porti on of Henry Co unty from which Patrick Cou nty was created in 1791.

The d ate of this marriage indicates that Millington Re ynolds w as born about 177 1.
