In September of 181 6, Hugh Ri ah married Eliza beth Hamm, a 16 year-old girl he met at a danc e, the daug hter of a S. Caro lina Revolutionary War veteran, John Hamm, S r. and his w ife, Phoebe Jane B lassingame who then lived in Giles Co, a nd later settl ed in McNairy Co, Te nnessee. Hugh and 'Betsy' settled on S hoal Creek in G iles County. The 18 20 census shows their nearby neighb or was a man nam ed Davy Crockett. Shortly after the Chickasaw Secession o pened up the ar ea for settlement, H amilton and Hugh Riah Reynolds came d own to Lauderda le County to obtain la nd for Hugh's growing family. Th ey settled on prope rty close to the sta te line, in an area that ca me to be known as Pruitto n. By 1825, Hugh was a ble to move his wife a nd five children to a log ho me on a ridge overlooki ng Sour Branch near B utler Creek. The family conti nued to grow and prosper. Hugh and Betsy Rey nolds ha d, by 1843, fourte en children. The ravages of the war in Lauderdale Co, coupled with the marti al la w, t ax increases and loss of slave labor, made the Reconstructi on Er a, in ma ny respects, more damaging to the family than the war had b een. P roperty w as lost in Sheriff's sales, criminal activity by The Bugg ers a nd others co ntinued, and the price of cotton plummeted. Sever al of Hugh a nd Betsy's ch ildren moved to Arkansas, in an effort to fi nd a better lif e. These includ ed Nancy Emily and her husband, William Ca rroll Bailey; Ge orge Riley and h is second wife, Nannie Hamm (his first w ife, Elizabeth Ha mm, died in 18 57 and is buried in the Wade Cemete ry in Iron City, Tenness ee); Winston Pe ttus and his third wife, Margar et J. Bell, and Wesley Blas singame and h is wife, Sarah Brewer. In Augu st 1871, Hugh Riah Reynolds di ed at the a ge of 76, and a few months late r, his 37 year-old son, Jose ph Pleasant, w as shot and killed. Both are b uried in the family cemeter y. Joseph Pleasan t's widow, Mary Eliza Raga n, and their six children mov ed to Tishomingo C o, Mississippi where h er family lived.
In January 1879, Sarah Olive, mother-in-law of Hugh and Betsy Reyno ld s' da ughter, Phoebe Jane, died and was buried in the family cemeter y. Pho ebe Ja ne was married to Sarah and James Olive's son, Willi am B. in 184 2. Sarah 's headstone shows the earliest birthdate (178 9) of those with cu rrently l egible inscriptions in the Reynolds' cemeter y. In June 1882, Hu gh Riah's w idow, Elizabeth 'Betsy' Hamm Reynolds, di ed and was buri ed in the family c emetery. She was 81 years old. The on ly known direct de scendant of Hugh a nd Betsy Reynolds living in Lauderda le County tod ay is Marjeenia Reynold s, a great, great granddaughter of t heir son, Thom as Hamilton. Most of Hu gh & Betsy Reynolds' descendants ev entually migrat ed to Texas, Arkansas a nd Oklahoma, but can be found acro ss the country t oday, from Maryland to C alifornia. As their youngest so n, Richard Randol ph Reynolds, wrote in a su rvey of Civil War veterans co nducted about 191 1, the Reynolds were a hard- working and 'respectable' f amily. However, Patri ck County recor ds lis ted below reveal that they were born earlier than 1 824. Milly McAle xand er was born 1801/2 in Patrick Co, Virginia. H enc e, the source of this information can not be verified without con ducti ng f urther research. However, his age as listed in the 1850 cens us belo w, conf irms that he was born in 1804/5 in Virginia. This suppor ts name a nd reside nce patterns listed above which strongly indicate th at he was t he son of J oseph Reynolds, Sr., and Sarah Perkins, i.e. the o lder broth er of your anc estor, Hamilton Reynolds.

As referenced above, the Let cher Co ge nealogy li sts that Joseph Reynolds was born in 1805 in Rockbri dge Co, Vir ginia and t hat he married Queentina Amburgey on 12 Dec 18 33 in Perry C o, Kentucky (Do c.#48b). Notice that this information corres ponds with t he 1850 census inf ormation listed above. However, as indicat ed above, the re are no parents l isted for this Joseph Reynolds. He was the son of Joseph Reynolds, Sr., and S ar ah P erkins who resided in Floyd Co, Kentucky; Buncombe Co, NC; and Pat ri ck C o, Virginia. According to an estate deed of Patrick Co, Virgini a, Jos eph R eynolds, Sr., appears to have died in Floyd Co, Kentucky pri or to 18 34. H is widow, Sarah Perkins, died in Floyd Co, Kentucky prior t o1847 wh en h er estate was probated.
Notice that in 1880, Hamilton Reynolds was listed as having be en 70 y ea rs old and born in NC as were his parents according to the abo ve censu s. H amilton and his wife appear to have died sometime after 18 80 in Flo yd Coun ty. However, we have been unable to locate a cemetery, d eath recor d, wi ll or probate file for your Hamilton Reynolds in Floyd Co unty reco rd s. In 1870, Hamilton Reynolds was residing near Prestonsburg in Pr ec in ct #9 of Floyd Co, Kentucky near an Elias Reynolds and your ancest or Wi lli am Hamilton Reynolds, the father of your ancestor Riley Reynol ds who w as a ge three in 1870:
Though earlier census records list Hamilton was born in NC, this ce ns us li sts he was born in Kentucky. However, the later census records a re m ore co nsistent and they appear most accurate. Unfortunately, the 18 50 cen sus fi lm was barely legible and we were unable to make a readab le photoco py.
From the names of Hamiltonís children, note that his oldest son w as n am ed William R. [Riley] Reynolds. Naming the first son after the fa th er of t he husband was a common naming practice for this time period. H owe ver, t he name Riley appears to have been a surname and hence, in th is ca se the o ldest son of Hamilton does not appear to have been named af ter Ha milton ís father? In addition, Hamilton had sons named Lewis, Rem as F., Ja mes P ., and John G.
Aside from this 1840 census record, the earliest record we have loc at ed f or Hamilton Reynolds in Floyd County is the marriage record for Ha mil ton R eynolds and Malinda Justice, dated 17 Feb 1834. In addition to H amil ton Re ynolds, there were several other Reynolds marriages which occu rr ed in Flo yd Co, Kentucky:

According to Floyd Co, Kentucky survey books, ìHamilton Reynoldî fir st o bt ained 50 acres of land on Beaver Creek in 1847. Notice that th is is t he sa me year that Sarah Reynoldsí estate was probated as listed a bove. Un fortun ately, there are no probate records filed in Floyd Coun ty for Sar ah Reynol dís estate. Hence, we searched a statewide index to K entucky pro bate recor ds prior to 1851, but nothing is listed for eith er Joseph or Sa rah Reynol ds (Doc.#43). Though Floyd Co, Kentucky does n ot require intest ate estat es to be probated, in light of the above Pow er of Attorney fil ed in Flo yd County deeds, the administration of Sar ah Reynoldís estate sh ould ha ve been recorded. Hence, we requested th at Floyd County condu ct a sear ch of their court and deed records. Howeve r, they were unab le to locate t he administration records for Sarah Reyno ldís estate or a ny other addition al information regarding this matter.
The earliest Floyd Co, Kentucky survey of land for an individual nam ed R ey nolds was for Joseph Reynolds who obtained 50 acres on Beaver Cree k, w hi ch was recorded in 1834 (Doc.#11c). Name and residence patterns in dica te t hat this was the same Joseph Reynolds who was the husband of Sar ah Re ynold s. Sarah Reynoldís estate was probated in 1847 in Floyd Count y. T he fact t hat this Joseph Reynolds obtained land on Beaver Creek p ri or to 1834, a nd your ancestor, Hamilton Reynolds, married in Floyd Co un ty on 17 Feb 183 4, in the same year the survey was recorded, indicat es th at Hamilton Reyno lds was the son of Joseph and Sarah Reynolds. Noti ce th at Hamilton didn ít purchase land there until thirteen years lat er in 184 7, the same year t hat the estate of Sarah Reynolds was probat ed and he ap pears to have recei ved his inheritance. Hence, Hamilton Reyn olds appea rs to have lived on la nd originally owned by his parents unt il he receiv ed his inheritance in 18 47 from the administration of the es tate of his m other, Sarah Reynolds, t he widow of Joseph Reynolds.
In addition to the above surveys and land records, surveys al so li st th at Hamilton Reynolds obtained 50 acres on Clear Creek in 185 8, 10 42 acr es on Beaver Creek in 1871, and another 235 acres on Beaver C reek l at er in the same year, 1871. (Doc.#11c).
Other Floyd Co, Virginia deeds reveal that there was a John and Marg ar et R eynolds of Crawford Co, Illinois (Doc.#45), who sold 100 a cr es of la nd on Big Paint Creek in 1838 (Doc.#44a). There was also a Jo se ph Reynol ds of Letcher Co, Kentucky (Doc.#46) who sold land on Can ey Fo rk in 1845 ( Doc.#44a). This same Joseph Reynolds then purchas ed 50 acr es on Caney Cre ek in 1846 (Doc.#44). However, neither John or J oseph Reyn olds of Letch er Co appear to have resided in Floyd County f or any leng th of time. Thou gh John and Margaret Reynolds were from Crawf ord Co, Illi nois, they appe ar to have moved there from Floyd Co, Kentuc ky where th ey bought land pri or to 1838. However, there is no reco rd of their origin al purchase of la nd according to Floyd County deeds.
Name and residence patterns of your Hamilton Reynolds, from o ur se ar ch of the IGI and Ancestral File records, revealed that he may ha ve be en r elated to a Hamilton Reynolds and his wife, Rachel Clements (Do c.#1 3, 1 5, 29, 31, 32, 35). However, after extensive research we have n ot be en ab le to find a connection. I did find in the 1850 Lee Co. census a Catharine Cooper, age 15, da ug ht er of Elizabeth Cooper (age 40, head of household, no husband nam ed ,) al so living in household were George 20, Mary 17, Martha 11 and Ha nn ah Gilbe rt, age 50. VA,VA. Don't know if this is the same Catharine Co op er thoug h, the ages don't match, but often they don't on census reco rd s. Howeve r, on the marriage record, Catharine's mother is list ed as E.
