General Notes: "Descendants of Edward Turner" notes Roger Turner was a Revolutionary W ar Veteran. A clpy of a Pension Record has been obtained. An excerpt fr om this record is as follows:
"I certify, that in conformity with the law of the United States of the 7t h, June 1832, Roger Turner of the State of Kentucky, who was a Priva te in the Army of the Revolution, is entitled to receive fifty three dolla rs and thirty three cents, per annum, during his natural life, commenci ng on the 4th day of March 1831, and payable semi_annually on the 4th of M arch and 4th of every year".
Given at the War Office of the United States, this 15th day of January, 18 33.

I do not, at this time, know the parentage of Sarah Speed. Roger an dSar ah were the parents of eight known chiildren; and possibly ten. The possib le children will be listed as children; but with notations.

Roger married Sarah Speed, daughter of John Speed and Sarah Baird, on 17 Nov 1779 in Wilkes Co, NC. Sarah was born bet1756 - 1765 and died bet1810 - 1830.
Marriage Notes: As per Harley Bowling's notes in his work, Bowlings of Eastern Kentucky; p g340 ... is the notation that the marriage between Roger Turner and Sar ah Speed is recorded in Wilkes County Marriage Bonds in North Carolina Sta te Archives.
Know all men by these present that we, Roger Turner and Stephen Harr is of Wilkes County, State of North Carolina are held and firmly bound un to Richard Cassell Esquire, Govenor of said state in the full and just . .. of five hundred pounds true money to be paid to the said Richard Casse ll Esuire. Govenor and Executors and administrators jointly and several ly firmly by there presents sealed with our seal and dated this 17th d ay of November Anno Domino 1779.
The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas the above bou nd Roger Turner hath the day above made written application for a marria ge license to be granted between him the daid Roger Turner and Sarah Spe ed of the said county. Now if there is no lawful cause to obstruct the sa id marriage be in every respect lawful then this obligation to be void oth erwise to remain in full force and virtue.

The exact date of Roger Turner's arrival in eastern Kentucky is uncertai n. The 1810 Clay County census shows Edward and John Turner as resident s. The Clay County Tax List of 1818 shows Mashack, Edward, Roger, Thoma s, Edward, David, Andrew and Roger Turner as resident. The 1840 shows Rog er Turner, age 83, a revolutionary war veteran living with his son, Thoma s. Old Kentucky Land grants show that the Turners settled on Turkey Cree k, Long's Creek, Turner's Creek, Elsome Creek, Cutshin Creek, Cow Creek a nd on the Middle Fork Kentucky River, in general. This included Breathit t, Perry and Owsley Counties. Sorting out the early Turner families is a m ajor task and the following is based on the best information available.
