Page 42

On this 4th day of November, 1887, at Seventy Six, County of Clinton, State of Kentucky, before me, W. H. Egleton a Special Examiner of the Pension Office, personally appeared Cynthia Stearns,~ who being by me first duly sworn to answer truly all interrogatories propounded to her during this Special Examination of aforesaid Pension Claim, deposes and says: her age is 63, P. O. Rowena, Russell County, Ky. Occupation - Housekeeper. And I am the wife of David Stearns.

I am a sister of the client “Sarah Brown”.

Sarah Brown had 4 children by Eli Brown, and they are as follows:

1st Surrilda Brown girl born in May or April 1851
2nd William Alfred Brown boy born in Oct. Year --
3rd Susanah Brown girl born in Month -- Year
4th Matilda Brown girl born in -- 1857

The dates of the births I cannot give any further than I have given them above. And that is entirely from memory.

Sarah Brown started to marry Eli brown in April or May 1850, but the exact date I could not give and I was not present at the marriage.

James Agee, the clients husband before Eli Brown, died at Nashville, Tennessee, in Oct. 1846. I waited on him while he was sick and was present when he died and present when he was buried. I don’t know when Eli

Brown’s first wife died.

I don’t know when Eli Brown died, and I never went to see him when he was sick.

All the dates I have now or ever have given in this case I gave from memory entirely. I have no record to refer to.

I have no interest in the case and I am not biased in the same, I have made an affidavit in the case and Mr. Wells swore me to the same.

~ Please explain ~

When I made that affidavit I remembered the dates and I know them just as well as I know the date of my own birth, but I am forgetful and can’t give them now, but I can say that when I made that affidavit I remembered them.

Q: Have you understood the questions asked you and are your answers to them correctly recorded in this deposition?
A: Yes Sir.
