Case of Sarah Brown , No. 253.142

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Page 44
On this 4th day of November, 1887, at Seventy Six, County of Clinton, State of Kentucky, before me, W. H. Egleton a Special Examiner of the Pension Office, personally appeared Sarah Mogg,~ who being by me first duly sworn to answer truly all interrogatories propounded to her during this Special Examination of aforesaid Pension Claim, deposes and says: her age is 44, P.O. Cumberland City, Clinton County, Ky. Occupation - Housekeeper, and I am the wife of John Mogg.
I have known the client ever since I have known anybody. But when she was married to Eli Brown, I don’t know. I can’t tell even about the time. Her first husband was James Agee, but when he died or when she was married to him I don’t know.
By Eli Brown she “Sarah” had 4 children
1st Surrilda Brown girl born in
2nd William Brown boy born in
3rd Susanah Brown girl born in
4th Matilda Brown girl born in born Sept middle 1857
I cannot tell the date of birth of any of the other children and I cannot tell the exact day of the month that Matilda was born but it was near the middle of the month.
I was present when this child Matilda was born and did not forget the time that it was. I never made any
record of it and I don’t know of any incident that occurred about the time she was born that makes me remember it.
I simply recollect that the child was born at the time that I have stated.
I do not know the date of birth of any of the other children. And I don’t know when Eli Brown’s first wife died. I have made 3 affidavits in this case, one before Joe Warriner, one before Mr. Hart and one before Mr. Higginbottom. I do not write my name and I never have. I took hold of the pen when I made my first affidavit but I don’t remember whether they made me make my mark or made me write my name, by their guidance.
When they wrote that affidavit if they put it 1856 they put it down wrong, for I know it was 1857 that Matilda was born. And I did not tell them that it was Sept. 10 or 15 but that it was sometime in Sept.
I am not related to the client and I am not interested or biased in the case. I have understood the questions asked me and my answers to them are correctly recorded in this deposition. Yes, I am 2nd or 3rd cousin to client.
