From Theresa: Early on I started making lists of information on Alex Scott in terms of how to separate out activities. My lists may be mistaken (especially as there may be more than one Alex Scott in VA, too), but here is what I have. Where no source is mentioned, it is the obvious one (census, military record, deed...) #1 1740 born (based on 1830 and 1840 census) 1753 in Augusta Co., VA 1774 on the N fork of Cedar Creek, a branch of the Clinch River 1781 in VA frontier militia August 22, 1781 deeded land on Cedar Creek February 2, 1782 Treasury warrant for 23 a on the N Fork of Cedar Creek 1782 on Cedar Creek in Washington Co (personal property tax list and deed of neighbor) 1783 on Cedar Creek in Washington Co (deed of neighbor) 1787-90 in Russell Co (tax lists) 1789 on Cedar Creek in Russell Co (personal property and land tax lists) 1794 daughter Mary (later Bewley) born with wife, Susan (Mary Bewley's death notice) 1795 in Green Co (tax list) 1799 in Russell Co (tax list) 1800 on Brush Creek in Green Co (census and tax list) 1801 consented to marriage of Lyddy Scot and William Jones 1802 consented to marriage of Rhoda Scott and Moses Hart 1818 marries Sarah (Sally) Hash 1820 Harding Scott, born before 1775, in Green Co 1822 widowed by Sally Hash Scott 1823 marries Eliza Bridges 1830 in Green Co (census says 90 yr.) #2 1790 born (1850 census) 1811 married Mary (Polly) Graham 1813 in Green Co (tax list of Jr. and Sr.) 1815 on Brush Creek (tax list of Jr. and Sr) September 10, 1822 bought 50 a on Brush Creek 1833 made will including Mary/Polly 1834 with Mary, sold 50 a on Brush Creek 1846 bought land 1850 in Green Co (census says 60 yr.) November 8, 1853 died #3 (and #4??) October 7, 1828 estate sold 1837 heirs of one and assignee of another? sell land ========================== From Debbie: I'm glad that you sent this to us Theresa. It is easier to look at it like this and I have done this on other families. Just been to confused on this one to really write it down. Correct me if I'm not understanding this, which I have been know to do. I have down that Alexander #3 (in your list) is the one that married twice, first to Sarah Hash & second to Eliza Bridges. Here are my reasoning behind this is that: 1. he is listed in the James Hash Estate settlement as Alexander H. and the older Alexander (#1 in your list) is always known as Alexander Sr. 2. In the Alexander H. Scott estate information there is a Eliza Scott that buys the same thing that the widow is listed as getting. 3. We know that there is an older Alexander in the 1830 census. I don't think I have anymore reasoning behind it. You know how hard it to keep track of your reasoning sometimes. :) So I think the corrected timelines that you originally sent for the Alexanders should look like this. I'm just corrected the one that Theresa sent in her original message (below) with my corrections not having the > in front of the line, hope that makes sense!. Well I guess that's all from me for now. Let me know what you both think. Again Theresa I'm glad that you sent this, it certainly helped me get them straight in my mind. ===================== From Theresa Isn't #2 the son of John and Nelly, therefore if related to #1, not a son? #3 has people we know to be related to #1 buying his property after death, doesn't he? Revised Time Line #1 - Alexander, Sr. 1740 born (based on 1830 Census) 1753 in Augusta Co., VA (??) 1774 on the N fork of Cedar Creek, a branch of the Clinch River 1781 in VA frontier militia August 22, 1781 deeded land on Cedar Creek February 2, 1782 Treasury warrant for 23 acres on the N Fork of Cedar Creek 1782 on Cedar Creek in Washington Co (personal property tax list and deed of neighbor) 1783 on Cedar Creek in Washington Co (deed of neighbor) 1787-90 in Russell Co (tax lists) 1789 on Cedar Creek in Russell Co (personal property and land tax lists) 1794 daughter Mary (later Bewley) born with wife, Susan (Mary Bewley/Buley's death notice) 1795 in Green Co (tax list) 1799 in Russell Co (tax list) 1800 on Brush Creek in Green Co (census and tax list) 1801 consented to marriage of Lyddy Scot and William Jones 1802 consented to marriage of Rhoda Scott and Moses Hart 1820 Harding Scott, born before 1775, in Green County Census 1830 in Green Co (census says 90 yr.) 1830-1837 dies in Green County #2 Alexander Hardin Scott 1790 born (1850 census) 1811 married Mary (Polly) Graham 1813 in Green Co (tax list of Jr. and Sr.) 1815 on Brush Creek (tax list of Jr. and Sr) September 10, 1822 bought 50 acres on Brush Creek 1833 made will including Mary/Polly 1834 with Mary, sold 50 acres on Brush Creek 1846 bought land 1850 in Green County Census - 60 yr. November 8, 1853 died #3 Alexander H. Scott 1818 marries Sarah (Sally) Hash 1822 widowed by Sally Hash Scott 1823 marries Eliza Bridges October 7, 1828 estate sold 1837 heirs of one and assignee of another (Alexander, Sr. ??) sell land ====================== From Debbie: Herb & Theresa, Thought I would let you all know that I have a new little tidbit on the Alexander's. I sent off for a copy of the actual James Hash's inventory and settlement, not the one in the inventory & settlement book but the pieces of paper that they transcribed it from. I was hoping that since Alexander & Sally were named in there thought it might produce something helpful. Two pieces of paper have Alexander H. Scott's signature on them where he turns in a bill for the schooling of the orphans of James Hash, Deceased. The thing that I found most interesting is another piece of paper. Here it is in it's entirety. Know all men by these present that we Alexr H. Scott, Junior, Sally Scott (late Sally Hash administ of Jas Hash Decd & Alexander Scott are held and firmly bound unto Samuel Combs in the penal sum of five hundred dollars current money of Kentucky the payment of which well and truly to be made we ?? ourselves our heirs & c Jointly and severally firmly by these presents seals with our seals and dated this 22nd day of June 1818 The condition of the above obligation is such that where as the above bound Saml Combs conceives himself in danger of suffering as security for the above named Sally Scott late Sally Hash as administratix of said James Hash deceased and has petitioned the court for relief and whereas it is ordered by said court that the said administratix aforsaid give to the said Combs counter security for his indemnity Now should the said Alexr Scott Junr, Sally Scott & Alexr Scott indemnity and secure him from any damages as security as aforesaid then this obligation to be void else to remain in full force and virtue Teste John Barret Alexander Scott(Seal) Sally Scott (Seal) Alexander Scott (Seal) Well what do you all think? This is right after Sally & Alexander H. get married on June 9th. I think it proves the relationship between the two Alexanders. One more thing. In the stuff that I got it does mention the children of James & Sally Hash. Herb, thought this might help you in knowing the number of each gender. I thought of this after looking at the email you sent on May 13, 2000 that had census info. in it. You had these children listed under Harding Scott pg. 80 of the 1820 census. From a guardian bond dated 18th of March 1822 naming Samuel Combs the guardian of Alfred, Joel, Thomas, Nancy, James and Sally Hash, infant children of James Hash, decd. So it looks like there were 4 boys and 2 girls. Also I would bet that Sally had died just previous to this, therefore the need to name a guardian. I looked in the 1810 Green Co. Census that I have was going to give you all the age brackets for the kids. But surprise, surprise I didn't find James Hash. So wherever James Hash might also be Alexander Scott. Well I guess that is all for me for now. Let me know what you think. ============================== From Theresa: > there is a Sally Scott that married John McFelea in 1829. Where did you find this record? I can't. > In the 1850 Green Co. Ky. Census is Family #69 John McFaelia age 65 born Maryland > and Sarah age 64 also born Maryland. John McFaelia shows up in no other data base that I can find. >No census anywhere else! I checked all kinds of spellings. > Also in the Green Co. Marriages is a marriage between Henry > Arnett & Elizabeth Scott >Moved to Hart County and had a mess of kids. Elizabeth b: 1808 would match >the age of a child shown in Sally's family in 1820. Slight problem [or >clue] is that in 1850 Elizabeth reports her birth as in Ohio. Wonder if >Alexander Sr. and William were up there running around in 1808? >Herb ================================= From Debbie: Sorry about not putting my source on there. The marriage for Sally Scott & John McFelea is in Green Co., Ky. Marriages 1793-1836. I have attached a file where I abstracted all the Scott's that I could find in the Green Co., Ky. marriages. I have just about all the marriage books for Green Co. and these are all the ones that were listed. As far as Alexander and William being in Ohio. I'll tell you I have given up trying to figure out this family and I have noticed that anything is possible. ===================== From Debbie: On my last trip to Green Co. I was talking to Barbara Wright about our dilemma with the Scott's. I was telling her about this while a friend of mine was looking through an index of the original settlements that Barbara had made years ago. These are the settlements that are entered into the settlement books. Barbara told me that these are the little pieces of papers that people would turn in to the administrators for payment. She said that some of the information on the papers like this is my share of my father's estate didn't get transcribed into the list. In other words they would just put the names and amounts and not the relationships. So of course my mind started hoping and praying. So I asked Carolyn Scott to make me a copy of the Alexander H. Scott settlement. I got it in the mail today. It doesn't really tell us anything. But I think it does narrow down his death date a little more. There are 3 notes that Alexander H. Scott signs. One to Rebekah Young dated 13 Dec. 1826, another to Hiram Underwood, dated 3 April 1827 and the third one is to John Meers dated 28 Jan. 1828. Then the other papers that Elias Barbee receive were people are wanting money, dated 7 Oct 1828, 15 Oct 1828 and 8 Nov. 1828. Something else that I noticed. In the lists of receipts they keep mentioning the widow approving the notes. In the list of the pay outs the first one is "By $8.00 the price of a mare sold to the widow. she being entitled to a work beast". Then as you mentioned in one of the other emails that Eliza Scott is listed in the book as being sold a mare. This confirms that Eliza is the widow. Good call on that one, I would never had put 2 and 2 together. ================== From Herb: Those early Scotts in Green County are driving me nuts again. I am beginning to ask myself how many Alexander Scotts were in Green County before 1850. The ones that we have found appear to be: Alexander [1740] , Alexander [1790], and his son Alex Jr. [1818] The 1790 Alexander apparently dies in 1853 and is wed only to Polly Graham. We have an estate settlement for Alexander H. Scott in 1828. This would seem to indicate a death in September of 1828 leaving a widow, the former Eliza Bridges. Because of the people who were at the estate sale and signed receipts, I assumed that this was the estate of the 1740 Alexander. I now don't think so and wonder if this is a third Alexander. Why? Because there is an Alexander Scott on the 1830 Census Microfilm with a mark in the 90-100 column and a mark like this next to it. (90) 1830-1740=90 PS Here are the Scotts that I can read. Ever since I took out their file a week or so ago they have been driving me batting also. I agree with you that there are 3 Alexanders. I had just gone through this train of thought yesterday when I was trying to put my file in some order. In organizing my file I think I found something else that will add to the confusion/questions or might actually give us an answer. There is a deed that looks interesting. In the compilation of the Scott's in Green Co., Ky. Deed Books that I sent you both. Deed Book 21 pg. 297 on 23 June 1837 W. Barnett of Green Co., Ky. & John Martin of Clark Co., Ky. of the first part and the heirs of Alex H. Scott deceased and Hiram Scott assignee of Alexander Scott Sr. deceased of Green County of the second part on Little Brush Creek containing 200 acres. So there are the other 2 Alexanders that are both dead and my Alexander b. 1790 is still alive...So 2+1=3. My questions though are this: Who are the W. Barnett & John Martin? Is this the Alexander H. that marries first Sarah (Martin) Hash and secondly Eliza Bridges? If so how can they be heirs of his since he didn't have any children? Also they are named in the estate sale or receipts that we have. So even though it proves your theory Herb of the 3 Alexanders it also opens up more questions. I think I will send off for the entire deed and see if it sheds anymore light. On to another question with a possible solution. The Sally that is in the 1820 Green Co. census that you listed. I believe that she is the same Sally Bartlett that married William Scott (son of Alexander 1740) in 1806 in Green Co. Her now being the widow of William. He disappears from the tax lists in 1810 then she (Sally) shows up in 1815 as widow. Then she is on there of and on until 1823. I don't know if she dies or not. But in the Green Co. Marriages there is a Sally Scott that married John McFelea in 1829. In the 1850 Green Co. Ky. Census is Family #69 John McFaelia age 65 born Maryland and Sarah age 64 also born Maryland. That would put her being born in 1786. If this is the same Sarah that married William then she would have been 20 when they married in 1806. How's it sounding so far? Well there is one more thing. Also in the Green Co. Marriages is a marriage between Henry Arnett & Elizabeth Scott. With a Sallie Scott, mother giving consent. This sounds like one of the many children that Sallie & William must of had that is listed on the 1820 Census with her. But what doesn't make sense is that if they had that many children why didn't they have some sort of guardian bonds or some sort of paperwork when he dies. Oh, these people =================== From Herb Please let me make sure that I understand this correctly. Tell me if I am wrong. The above means that Alex H. is dead. His heirs sold the land to Barnett and Martin. Also Hiram Scott sold land them land that he had previously bought from Alexander Sr. Comments: Deed did not say that Alexander H. and Alexander Scott Sr. were the same person. Are they here for purposes of this deed or do we have 2 pieces of land that total 200 acres formerly owned by father and son? I think so. Seems to me that the Alexander H. who died in 1828 was the son of Alexander Sr. and that Alexander H. had at least 2 children by Sarah. >Who are the W. Barnett & John Martin? Rich men buying up farm land. I have other information on this John Martin. > I believe that she is the same Sally > Bartlett that married William Scott (son of Alexander 1740) in 1806 in Green > Co. Her now being the widow of William. He disappears from the tax lists > in 1810 then she (Sally) shows up in 1815 as widow. Then she is on there of > and on until 1823. And one other question. I don't have the tax papers that you sent but after looking at the Census I would like to know Alexander [1740] is not found in the 1810 or 1820 Census?
