Franklin M. Welborn
F.M. Welborn, great grandson of pioneer James Welborn, was born and reared in Muhlenberg County. He was fairly educated as a boy and taught school two terms before entering Bethel College for further training. While in college he professed faith in Christ and was baptized by the Russellville Church which licensed him to preach in 1860. He was ordained by Hazel Creek in 1862.
Elder Welborn's first pastorate was Macedonia. During the following years he preached for Hazel Creek, Friendship, Ebenezer, Mt. Carmel, Nelson Creek, Central City, Carter Creek, and Dunmor in Muhlenberg county. He also had churches in adjoining counties.
He was made secretary of the Mission Board in the Gasper River Association which place he filled for several years. In 1875 he was chosen clerk of Gasper River and was re-elected for 22 sessions. At the request of this body he published a record of its history up to 1876. The Association made him a messenger to the General Association of Kentucky Baptists several times, and twice to the Southern Baptist Convention.
