Gravestone placed after 1972 in memory of an unnamed slave owned by Jesse Murphy.

From A History of Muhlenberg County: The slave referred to was “one Negro woman-Leah” bought on December 5, 1814 for $350.00 by Jesse Murphey who paid about half in cash and the balance in pork and lard. [Rothert 118]

Jesse Murphey was the son of Thomas Murphey who died in Pitt Co., North Carolina.

Jesse married three times: (1) Fannie; (2) Polly Cross 4 Mar 1824 Muhlenberg County; (3) Susannah Davis 21 Sept 1837 Muhlenberg County.

(Susannah D. Murphey married John Arnold 7 Aug 1855 Rockport, Indiana.)

Jesse Murphey settled this land in 1805 and was one of the well-known early settlers of the neighborhood. The land is still owned by his descendants.

July Ann Pace was the daughter of James Jolly Sherrod & Mary Thornsberry.

July Sherrod married (1) Thomas Murphey 21 Mar 1850. She married (2) William Ledfeter Pace 7 Feb 1863 Muhlenberg County.

William Pace is buried at Judges Chapel Cemetery in Christian County.

William Oates Randolph, born about 1834 Muhlenberg County, was the son of Ashford Dowden Randolph & Geraldine Mancrief Oates and the grandson of Robert Mason Randolph & Polly Cross.

John Lindsey Spurlin was the son of John Spurlin & Rebecca Utley.

He married Frances Murphey 4 Mar 1847 Muhlenberg County.

According to family tradition, he drowned in Murphey Lake trying to save a friend.

The gravestones for Nannie Pace Lile, Jesse & Fannie Murphey, Jesse Murphey Slave, and Poly Cross Murphey are newer than the rest of the gravestones in this cemetery. They were likely placed after 1972 when the cemetery was recorded for the Muhlenberg County Kentucky Cemeteries Vol. 4.

Location: Take U.S. Route 62 west from Greenville to Kentucky Route 189, turn left. Go about 4 miles to the Greens Chapel Road and turn right. Go about 6 miles. The cemetery is located on the old Justus Murphey farm, 1.3 miles past Greens Chapel Church, and ¼ mile east of the road.
