From a Muhlenberg County Circuit Court Case involving Mt. Carmel Baptist Church and the estate of Sally Smith: Several years ago while Lennie Dennis and [Dorann Lam] worked on publishing a book on Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, I [Dorann Lam] unearthed Sally Smith (Sarah Hampton Smith). In Muhlenberg County Circuit Court File Drawer 85, Bundle 1255, I found a large bundle on her estate. I found that for some reason Mt. Carmel was indebted to her (she was a member). Sally died intestate. The records named Nancy Ann Nanny, a sister; a bill in 1874 for a coffin and who made it; and it named William Newman Smith & wife Harriet Smith (who sued her estate $25) and stated William Newman Smith was a son of Frances Smith and that Frances Smith was Sally Smith's sister-in-law. Sally Smith left a sister Lydia McKinney who “has since died” leaving one child Sarah A. Peay, wife of William F. Peay, Lydia's only heir-at-law. Mary Young, also named as a sister, had died intestate19.
