Jennie Napier Bastin, 1939

Funeral rites for Mrs. J.W. Bastin to be at 8 a.m. Friday

Services at Christian Church; Burial at 2 o'clock in afternoon at Stanford, Ky.

Mrs. Jennie Napier Bastin, widow of John W. Bastin, died at her home at the corner of Center and West Second Street Wednesday night at 11:20 at the exact hour and minute when her husband died on November 27, 1938.

Mrs. Bastin had not been complaining prior to the death of Mr. Bastin, but after he passed away she seemed unable to rally from the shock and soon followed him in death.

Mrs. Bastin was born on May 2, 1863, near Stanford, Ky., and was a graduate of Midway College. On January 12, 1886, she married John W. Bastin, one of the neighbor boys and went as a bride to Pittsburg, Ky., where they made their home for 29 years. Later they moved to Lexington, Ky., and from there they moved to Central City in March, 1915. To this union two children were born, Arthur Bastin, their first child, who died when only 2½ years old, and Mrs. E.C. Purvis of Central City.

Mrs. Bastin, when quite a child, joined the Christian Church at her home at Stanford, and through all the years she has been a leader in the church of her belief wherever she lived. At all cities and towns where she lived her late husband was an official of the church and she taught the first class in the Sunday School. At the time of her death, she was President of the Missionary Society of the First Christian church and teacher of the Sunday School class for the ladies of the church. She was also very active in affairs that concerned the betterment of Central City, being a former president of the Woman's Club. She was generous in her contributions to the poor, taking care of them in her own quiet way. Mrs. Bastin will be greatly missed by her large circle of friends and acquaintances to whom she has endeared herself throughout all the years she has made her home in Central City.

Besides her daughter, Mrs. Purvis, she is survived by three grandsons, John Bastin Harvey, president of the Nelson Creek Coal Company, Lee Givens Harvey and Edwin Harvey, all connected with the Nelson Creek Coal Company and all residents of Central City. Also by one brother, T.W. Napier of Nelson.

Funeral services for Mrs. Bastin will be conducted tomorrow morning, Friday, at 8 o'clock, from the Central City Christian Church by her pastor, the Rev. C.C. England. Burial will be in the family Bastin burial lot at Stanford, Ky., at 2 o'clock in the afternoon.

Active pallbearers: Messrs. Roy Wright, S.O. Maples, Grainger Simpson, James Long, F.T. Wallace and J.E. Moore. Honorary pallbearers will be all the members of her Sunday School class, which she has taught for nearly a quarter of a century.
