Sears, Claud Thomas

Central City - Claud Thomas Sears, 80, of London, died there Friday, May 5, 1989. He was born in Muhlenberg County, was a retired coal miner and steelworker, and was a member of Walnut Street Baptist Church in Owensboro.

His wife, Mae Sears, died in 1975, and a son, Tom Sears, preceded him in death.

Survivors include two sons, Leon Sears of Griffith, Ind., and Jerry Sears of London; and three grandchildren, Donna Sears of Hobart, Ind., Tammy Stanley of Missouri and Tom Sears of St. Petersburg, Fla.

Services are at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Tucker Funeral Home, Central City.

Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery, Central City. Visitation after 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Sears, George Thomas

George T. Sears died Dec. 27 after a 3-day illness
Suffered heart attack; Taken to Greenville Hospital for treatment.

George Thomas Sears, for many years a resident of Central City prior to the time that he retired and made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Paul Sanchez at Gary, Indiana, died on December 27th at the Greenville Hospital following a few days illness.

Mr. Sears for many years was connected with the Central Coal & Iron Company, and later with the Madison Coal Corporation, and was greatly loved by all his acquaintances. On Thanksgiving day he had come, as was his custom, to visit his nephew, S.O. Sears, and to enjoy the hunting during the hunting season. On December 24 he suffered a heart attack and was taken to the hospital for treatment, but never rallied.

The son of John W. Sears and Mary Rutherford Sears, he was born in Logan County, Kentucky, on December 17, 1859, and was a member of a well known pioneer family of the county.

He is survived by his four daughters, Mrs. Lena Saunders and Mrs. R. W. Stapleton of Chicago, Illinois, and Mrs. Marshall Leonard and Mrs. Pearl Sanchez of Gary, Ind., and by his one son, John William (Ziggy) Sears, of Fort Worth, Texas, an umpire for the World Series of baseball.

His funeral was conducted in the Arthur L. Moseley home in Central City and was in charge of the Rev. Ollie Weir of Livermore. Interment was in the Sears family burial ground near Drakesboro.

Sears, Robert F.

Robert F. Sears, 79, dies Monday following auto accident Saturday

Greenville - Robert F. (Bob) Sears, 79, died at 8:15 a.m. Monday at the Munlenberg Community Hospital, Jan. 4, as a result of an injury received when he was struck by an automobile on the Drakesboro Road in front of his home at 3:20 p.m. Saturday.

Coroner M. V. Foster of Central City said death was caused by a skull fracture when he walked into the path of an automobile driven by Ben Messer, 58, Drakesboro. This was the first traffic fatality of the year in Muhlenberg. There were six last year.

Mr. Sears had gotten out of a farm truck parked across from his home on Highway 176 and was attempting to cross the highway, from behind the truck, when he was struck by an oncoming car driven by Mr. Messer, according to authorities. Mr. Messer told authorities that he didn't see Mr. Sears until he was upon him, and that he was unable to stop his car.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Nettie Sears, Greenville Route 2; three daughters, Mrs. Will Spurlin of Greenville Route 1, Mrs. Bessie Wilkins and Mrs. Claud Browning, both of Greenville Route 2; son, Coleman Sears, Greenville Route 2; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Mrs. Aaron Mayes, Greenville; brother, Guy Sears of Clifty.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Full Gospel Holiness Church, conducted by the Rev. Samuel Cooper. Burial was in Woodland Cemetery.

Settle, Arnold

Arnold Settle dies in Florida

Arnold Settle, 84, a retired production manager for Lilly and former Indianapolis resident, died Monday at St. Petersburg, Fla., where he lived.

Settle, who retired from Lilly in 1957, was a former member of Northwood Christian Church and was a member of Central Christian Church at St. Petersburg and Pasadena Golf and Country Club in Florida.

He was a World War I Army veteran and a former commander of American Legion Post 312 here.

Services will be Friday at 10 a.m. in Flanner & Buchanan Fall Creek Mortuary, where friends may call tomorrow from 6 to 9 p.m. Entombment will be in Crown Hill Mausoleum.

Survivors - daughter Betty Lee Bumb [sic - Bumbo]; brother Thomas; sisters Frances Felix, Mary Barker, Catherine Wright.

Settle, Flora

Mrs. Arnold Settle

Services for Mrs. Arnold (Flora) Settle, 77, St. Petersburg, Fla., an Indianapolis resident from 1920 until 1957, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Crown Hill Mausoleum Chapel, with entombment to follow. She died Tuesday in a St. Petersburg hospital. She was a former member of Northwood Methodist Church and American Legion Auxiliary 312. Mrs. Settle was born at Central City, Ky. Survivors, besides her husband, include a daughter, Mrs. Betty L. Bumbo of Marco Island, Fla. Flanner and Buchanan Fall Creek Mortuary is handling arrangements.

Rev. R.C. Settles, 75, Buried April 5

The Rev. R.C. Settles, 75, died at his home in Central City Monday, April 3 at 6:50 p.m. He was a retired Kentucky Utilities employee, born in Todd County April 16, 1885 and was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, April 5 at 2 p.m. at the Harrison Avenue Church of God of Prophecy with the Rev. Jack Harris, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Ada McGhee of Owensboro. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Emma Settles of Central City; two sons, Earl and Burney Settles of Central City; three step-daughters, Mrs. Letha Amos and Mrs. Lorene Tatum of Central City, Mrs. Louise Johnson of Cleaton; step-son, James Latham of Owensboro; brother, Gil Settles of Louisville; two sisters, Mrs. Fannie McGhee of Clifty, Mrs. Annette Garnett, Drakesboro; six grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren.
