Sparks, Hura A.

Hura A. Sparks, 68, Dies Jan. 14

Powderly - Hura Alton Sparks, 68, died suddenly Monday, Jan. 14 at 12:45 a.m. at his home in Powderly.

Born in Muhlenberg County Jan. 25, 1905, he was an employee of the J. Zinsmeister Co. for 25 years as a salesman and office manager. He was a member of the Greenville Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Irene Sparks of Powderly; son, Douglas Sparks of Powderly; grandson; two sisters, Mrs. P.K. Langley and Mrs. Ted Nichols of Greenville; brother, Huba Sparks of Louisville.

Services will be at 3 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Gary Funeral Home in Greenville with Mr. Thomas Orr in charge. Burial will be in Muhlenberg Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Powderly.

Sparks, Peter Miller

Peter M. Sparks, 88, Central City, Dies

Peter Miller Sparks, 88, retired businessman, died at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Calhoun while on a visit. Mr. Sparks was a life-long resident of the Central City section.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Central City and a past member of the Bremen Oddfellows.

Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Gertie Quinn, Mrs. Maude Kittinger, Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. Morris Dodson, Akron, Ohio, Mrs. Cleve Carroll, Ripley, Tenn., Mrs. Bessie Whitmer, Bremen; five sons, Ecklas and Thurman, Evansville, Ind., Chester, Tom and Charles Sparks, Central City; 35 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, one brother, Morris, of East St. Louis, Ill., three sisters, Mrs. Jim Brown, Mrs. Ida Stovall, Greenville, and Mrs. Emma Vincent of Owensboro.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the East Union Baptist Church with the Rev. S. A. Kittinger officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with grandsons acting as pallbearers.

Spinks, Mary

Miss Mary Spinks, 77, buried Tuesday

Graham - Miss Mary Spinks, 77, died Sunday, Sept. 3 at 10:10 p.m. in the Muhlenberg Community Hospital following a lingering illness.

She was born in Muhlenberg County on May 4, 1890.

She is survived by one brother, Arthur Sinks of Graham; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in Greenville with the Rev. Marvin Freeman officiating, with burial in Oak Grove Cemetery at Depoy.

Spurlin, James T.

James T. Spurlin, Greenville, Dies Tuesday; Heart Failure
Retired Merchant Succumbs To Heart Attack at Age of 70 Years; Services Held Wednesday.
Funeral services for James T. Spurlin were held at Greenville Wednesday afternoon with members of the Masonic lodge acting as pallbearers.

Mr. Spurlin was 70 years old, former police judge of Greenville, and a retired merchant. He died suddenly Tuesday afternoon at his home in College street in Greenville. Mr. Spurlin had been in the business district transacting business but an hour or so previous and returned to his home, where he was engaged in writing when he collapsed from heart failure. He had been a victim of heart disease for some time, but he was not believed to be in immediate danger.

Born and reared in Muhlenberg county, Mr. Spurlin for many years conducted a general merchandise store at Depoy, in the county, moving to Greenville some years ago. He was widely known throughout the county, moving to Greenville some years ago, and throughout the county had a wide circle of friends and acquaintances.

Surviving are the widow, three daughters, Mrs. B. W. Scott, Dearborn, Mich.; Mrs. R. G. Leham, Paris, Ill.; and Mrs. Townes Martin, Greenville; two sons, George L. Spurlin, Penny Farms, Fla., and W. G. Spurlin, Dearborn, Mich., also a sister, Mrs. Mary Cley, Redlands, Calif.

Pallbearers were, honorary, H. N. Howerton, Ed S. Woods, George W. Fentress, B. W. Christian, Dr. J. H. Gray, B. F. Mercer, J. L. Taggart, S. E. Rice, J. L. Rogers, R. E. Wallace, O. G. Simmons, Circuit judge Doyle Willis.

Mr. Spurlin was a long member of the Baptist church. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery in Greenville.

Spurlin, John William

Greenville - John William “Will” Spurlin, 80, retired coal miner, died at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday in the Muhlenberg Community Hospital after a brief illness. He was a native of Todd County and a member of the Luzerne General Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Odie Spurlin; two stepdaughters, Mrs. William Carey and Mrs. Clarence Miller Jr., both of Greenville, and six step-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Holiness Church with the Rev. Samuel Cooper officiating, assisted by the Rev. Fred Harmon. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery.

The body is at the Gary Funeral Home.
