The "Grantor" is the seller/lessor. The "Grantee" is the buyer/lessee of the property,
The names in the deed indexes are not in strict chronological or alphabetic order, but are often grouped by the surname of the Grantee/Grantor.
I have also found evidence of books not being fully transcribed, so check both the grantee and and the grantor indexes for deeds
Hand written indexes 1 through 60 and A - Z were consolidated
into the 1838-1938 typed volumes, A through Z and Misc..
The original hand-written indexes were transcribed into typed indexes in 1939.
This was apparently a Federaly funded WPA project
Note that in several cases, pages entitled "Grantee Grantor" were used in the "Grantor - Grantee" books.
