Slaying sentence in county upheld. The sixteen-year prison sentence given B.M. Melton, colored, of Central City, in Muhlenberg Circuit Court on a manslaughter charge growing out of the slaying of Estill Render, colored, was upheld Friday by the Court of Appeals.
A saintly sinner. Sedalia, Mo., Sept. 10. - Rev. A.S. Merritt, pastor of the Mount Zion (colored) church of this city, who is a married man with a wife and two small children, was forced to depart between two suns a little over a week ago, on account of having been caught in a liason with his secretary, a comely young girl named Addie Emerson. In his flight Rev. Mr. Merritt took with him about $400 belonging to the church of which he was treasurer. The sum was the result of months of collections for the purpose of building a new church. He also carried away with him all the records of the church. A search was at once instituted and the defaulting minister was located at his former home in Muhlenberg county, Kentucky. Yesterday Sheriff Ellis R. Smith, of this county, armed with the necessary papers, left for Kentucky to bring back the preacher, whose arrest was secured by telegraph.
