Samuel J. Cates, 1917
I, Samuel J. Cates, a retired merchant of Central City Muhlenberg County Kentucky, make this my last will. I give, devise, and bequeath my estate and property, real and personal, as follows. That is to say:
I give and devise to my beloved wife Minerva Cates, my house and lot on south side of first street, and known as my home place, and my store building on the north side of Broad street near the L.&N.R.R. all in the town of Central City Muhlenberg County Kentucky. Or any Other real estate that I may own at the time of my death. I also give and bequeath to my wife Minerva Cates, all moneys and other personal property that I may possess at my death. My wife Minerva Cates is to pay all my just debts and funeral expenses. My failure to give, devise, bequeath any thing to my several children in this my last will, is intentional. From the fact that some of them are now minors and dependent upon their mother who is my wife Minerva Cates. And from the further fact that I have the utmost faith that my wife, their mother, will care for, and provide for each of them as she deems just and proper.
I appoint my beloved wife Minerva Cates, a house keeper of Central City Muhlenberg County Kentucky as executrix of this my will, without bond or any appraisement of my real estate or property of any kind.
I witness whereof, I have signed and sealed and published and declared this instrument as my will, at Central City, Muhlenberg County Kentucky, on this the 2nd day of May, 1916.

The said Samuel J. Cates at said Central City Muhlenberg County Kentucky on said 2nd day of May 1916, signed and sealed this instrument, and published and declared the same as and for his last will. And we, at his request, and in his presence, and in the presence of each other, have hereunto written our names as subscribing witnesses.

I, J. Leo Fentress, Clerk of the Muhlenberg County Court, certify that the foregoing instrument of writing was, at the regular February, 1917, term of this Court, admitted to probate as the Last Will and Testament of Samuel J. Cates, deceased, and ordered to be recorded as such, whereupon, the same, the foregoing and this certificate have been duly recorded in my office.
