Ratliff, Creed Ervin
-63, of Elkhorn City, died Friday, Sept. 9, 2005 at
Pikeville Medical Center. He was born in Pike County,
Dec. 19, 1941, a son of the late Bergeon and Lula Adams
Ratliff. He was a coal truck operator and miner. He was
preceded in death by one brother, Raymond Ratliff; and
two sisters, Joyce Coleman and Lois Wright. He is
survived by his loving companion, Debbie Rasnick of
Shelbiana; one son, Greg Ratliff of Lexington; seven
daughters, Louella Martin, Wendy Ratliff, of Knoxville,
Tenn., Michelle Ratliff of Prestonsburg, Amanda Bartley
of Elkhorn City, Vanessa Ratliff Brown of Pikeville,
Christy Belcher of Marrowbone, Melissa Bartley of
Kimper; four brothers, Steve Ratliff and Cleve Ratliff,
both of Trenton, Tenn., Danny Earl Ratliff of Powells
Creek, Ray Allen Ratliff of Fishtrap; three sisters,
Lillie Mae Damron of Elkhorn City, Wilma DeLisle and
Virginia Gail Keene, both of Trenton; 14 grandchildren;
and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held
at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12, in the Bailey Funeral Home
Chapel with Richard Gibson and Poor Bottom Freewill
Baptist Church ministers officiating. Burial followed in
the Wilson Cemetery, Draffin. Arrangements were under
direction of Bailey Funeral Home.

Ratliff, Ethel Lou Roberson
Carpenter Metzcar - was born December 27,
1920, to Edward (Ed) and Surena Vest Roberson, in the
area now known as Kellacy, Morgan County, Kentucky. She
departed this life on Sunday, August7, 2005, at 10:45
p.m., at Garden Manor Nursing Facility, in Middletown,
Ohio. She was 84.Ethel was raised by her grand-mother,
Alwilda Josephine Peyton Vest Mays, assisted by her aunt
and uncle, Ninnie Melda Mays Smith and John Andy Smith.
She was married to Ollie Wycklis (Wyck) Carpenter; and
later married to Bernell Lincoln (Mick) Metzcar. To this
union were born two daughters, Conna. Lee Henderson and
Barbara Jo (Keg) Swope. A later marriage to Willard
Ratliff produced a son, David Willard Ratliff. Ethel was
a beloved and devoted mother, grandmother,
great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother, and was
affectionately known by everyone as "Mamaw". She will be
greatly missed by all who knew her. .Her husband,
Willard Ratliff, preceded her in death in 1988.In
addition to her two daughters and one son, she is
survived by a son-in-law, Ken Henderson;
daughter-in-law, Mary Beth Ratliff; eight grandchildren,
Robert, Steve and Pastor Ken Henderson, Frank and Kris
Woolum, Joshua and Rebecca Ratliff, and Zachary Carver;
12great grandchildren, Brandon, Jonathon, and Robbie
Henderson, Zachary and Emily Henderson; Izabella Grace
Henderson, Daniel, Brenna, and Kyle Woolum, and Joe and
Barbara Taylor, and Keegan Carver; one great-great
granddaughter, Grace Henderson. Funeral services were
conducted at noon Thursday, August11, at
Breitenback-McCoy.-Leffler Funeral Home, in Middletown,
Ohio, with help of , grandson, Rev. Kenneth Andrew
Henderson, officiating. Burial followed at North Monroe
Cemetery, Monroe, Ohio, under the direction of
Breitenbach-McCoy-Leffler Funeral Home.

Ratliff, Lillian Lucille (May)
-passed away Saturday, August 6, 2005, at the
Pikeville Medical Center. She was born May 1, 1920,
daughter of the late Jeff and Myrtle (Litteral) May. She
was preceded in death by her first husband, Claude
Canada, and second husband, Rush Ratliff; a brother,
Billy May, and one son, Odelle Ratliff. She was a member
of the Miller's Creek Church of Christ. Survivors
include her sons: Donnie (Wanda) Canada of Kimper, Rush
Randall (Sharon) Ratliff of Kimper; daughters: Doris
(Grayson) Layne of Frenchburg, Avonell (Buster) Coleman
of Kimper, and Phyllis Ratliff of Kimper; five
grandchildren: Grayson (Stephanie) Layne Jr., Dale Lyn
Layne, Chris (Suzanne) Canada, Teresa Chevalier, and
Bryan Ratliff; three great-grandchildren: Matthew and
Nicholas Chevalier, and Isabelle Layne; a sister,
Annalee (Alonzo) Layne of Muscle Shoals, Alabama; three
step-children: Weultha (Richard) Ter Doest of Hudson,
Michigan, Tracy (Roxie) Ratliff of Toledo, Ohio, and
Audrey (Glen) Stevens of Kimper; and several nieces and
nephews. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August
10, at 1 p.m., at the Justice Funeral Home Chapel,
Pikeville, with Dean Lyons and Jim Abshire, Church of
Christ ministers, officiating. Burial will follow in the
Annie E. Young Cemetery, under the direction of Justice
Funeral Home. Visitation is at the funeral home

Friday, August 12, 2 p.m. at the Jones-Preston Funeral
Home Chapel for Mary Magdleon Branham Ratliff, 71, of
River, Ky., who passed away Monday, August 8 at Select
Specialty Hospital in Charleston, W.Va. Mrs. Ratliff was
born November 25, 1933 in Johnson County, Ky., daughter
of the late Turner Elzie and Sarah Elizabeth Kirk
Branham. She was a homemaker. She was also preceded in
death by her husband, Billy Roger Ratliff. Surviving are
two sons, Billy Roger Ratliff Jr. of Mt. Morris, Mich.,
and Glenn Allen Ratliff of Florence, Ky.; one daughter,
Shirley Ann Brown of Flushing, Mich.; two brothers,
Ottis Branham of Paintsville, Ky., and Albert Branham of
Franklin, Ohio; one sister, Martha Selvage of Inez, Ky.;
and five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The

-1945-2005-Funeral services were held Wednesday, August
3, at Vernon Funeral Home in Urbana, Ohio, for Ova “Bub”
Ratliff, 60, of Urbana, Ohio, who passed away Saturday,
July 30 at his residence. Mr. Ratliff was born March 11,
1945 in Johnson County, Ky., son of the late Topsy and
Leona Ratliff. He was a retired silo worker. Surviving
are two sons, Mark and Matt Ratliff, both of Urbana,
Ohio; one brother, Jay Ratliff of Indiana; two
half-brothers, Hollie Ratliff of Red Bush, Ky., and
Lawrence Ratliff of Tutor Key, Ky.; three sisters, Dicie
Vanhoose of Denver, Ky., Ella Ratliff of Leander, Ky.,
and Hattie Thacker of Urbana, Ohio; three half-sisters,
Mary Pennington of Williamsport, Ky., and Ollie Southern

Hobert “Hobie” Reed, 37, of Boons Camp, Ky., who passed
away Tuesday, August 23 at University of Kentucky
Medical Center in Lexington, Ky. Mr. Reed was born
November 27, 1967 in Johnson County, Ky., son of the
late Fred and Margaret Gross Reed. He was also preceded

Reynolds, Homer -82,
of Catlettsburg, formerly of Allen, died Sunday, August
7, 2005, in Lexington. Born June 19, 1923, in Floyd
County, he was the son of the late Jeff and Matilda
Hamilton Reynolds. He was a retired Ironworker, a member
of Ironworkers Local 769, Ashland, a member of the
Oakland Avenue Baptist Church, a U.S. Navy veteran,
serving in the South Pacific during WW II, and was
awarded the Purple Heart. He is survived by his wife,
Myrtle Johnson Reynolds. Other survivors include one
son, Dr. Roy D. Reynolds, and his wife Judy, of
Franklin; two daughters: Gwendolyn R. Webb of Lexington,
and Barbara Sue Reynolds of Pikeville; four sisters:
Maudie Meade of Dayton, Ohio, Joan Reynolds of Canton,
Ohio, Ruby Akers of Dayton, Ohio, and Madge Spurgeon of
Paintsville; and three grandchildren: Alan Reynolds of
Bowling Green, Tasha Harilson of Nicholasville, and
Monica Webb of Lexington. He was preceded in death by
seven brothers, and five sisters. Funeral services will
be held Wednesday, August 10, at 1 p.m., in the Steen
Funeral Home-Marshall Steen Chapel, in Ashland, with
Rev. Paul Padget officiating.

1904-1996 Retired teacher June Meade Rice, 91, died
February 22, 1996, at her Staffordsville residence. Mrs.
Rice was born June 1, 1904, in Johnson county the
daughter of the late Fred and Lula Butler Meade. she was
a member of the First Church of God of Lowmansville.
Surviving are her husband, Crate Rice; three sons,
Harold b. and Eugene c. Rice, both of Paintsville, and
Rev. Lowell C. Rice of Owingsville; two daughters, Alice
J. Wilcox of Greenville, Tennessee, and Janet England of
Centerville, Ohio; two sisters, Dottie Bailey of
Paintsville and Betty Burchett of Staffordsville; and 15
grandchildren and 18 great- grandchildren. Funeral
services were held Sunday, February 25, at Paintsville
Funeral Home Chapel, with Revs. Willard Wilcox and
Lowell C. Rice officiating. Burial was in Meade Cemetery
at Staffordsville. Her grandsons served as pall bearers.

at Wolfe County Healthcare Center, in Campton. Born
March 11, 1928, in Morgan County, Violet was the
daughter, of the late Clifton Engle and Cella Lewis
Engle. She was a homemaker and attended the Church of
Free Worship, in West Liberty. In addition to her
parents, Violent was preceded in death by her husband,
Walter Riggsby. Survivors include one son, Stanley
Riggsby and wife, Lesley, of West Liberty; three
granddaughters, Amy Thornsbury and husband, Abraham,
Sarah Patrick and husband, Scott, and Misty Hicks and

her husband, Ora Robbins in Sept of 1975, 1 daughter,
Nancy Robbins and 2 sons, William Robbins and Lowell
Robbins. Surviving are 2 daughters, Monnie Doolin, Wanda
Cantrell, 3 sons, Winford Robbins, Clyde Robbins and
Justin Robbins, 14 grandchildren and 10 great

1911-1996 Agnes Daniels Ross, 85, died April 2, 1996, at
Highland Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Ross was born
February 15, 1911, in Lawrence County, the daughter of
Orlando and Ollie Wheeler Daniels. She is preceded in
death by her husband, Roy R. Ross. She is survived by
two sons, Jackie Ross and Don Ross both of Paintsville;
tow daughters, Peggy Castle of Reynoldsburg, Ohio and
Ruth Ann Brickley of Knoxville, Tennessee; Two brothers,
Herschel Daniels of Paintsville and Bill Daniels of
Flatwoods; four sisters, Ruby Moss of Lucasville, Ohio,
Hazel Franklin and Elizabeth Mollette both of
Paintsville and Freda Conley of Danville; nine
grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral
services were held April 4, 1996 at Paintsville United
Baptist Church with Mike Castle officiating. Burial was
at Highland Memorial Park in Staffordsville.

(Osborne) 1922 1996 Preston Funeral Home was
in charge of arrangements for Lorraine "Tubby" Salyer,
74, who died Friday, February 23, 1996, at Mountain
Manor Nursing Home. Mrs. Salyer was born December
29,1922, in Floyd County, the daughter of the late Cain
and Vannie Estep Osborne. She was a retired cook from
the Starfire Motel and Restaurant and a member of Kerz
Enterprise Baptist Church. Also preceding her in death
was her husband, Homer Salyer, in 1977. Surviving are
three sisters, Nancy Caudill of Sitka, Louise Verville
of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, and Cova Francis of
Bellefontaine, Ohio; and two grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday,
February 26, at Kerz Enterprise Baptist Church, with
Donald Ray Caudill officiating. Burial was in Osborne
Cemetery at Sitka, with Preston Funeral Home in charge
of arrangements.

at her home. She was born in Pikeville, Jan. 12, 1942, a
daughter of the late Gilford and Virgie Nichols. She was
a homemaker and a member of the Freewill Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Les
Schreifels. She is survived by one son, Paul Chaney of
Whitesburg; one daughter, Jo Ann Justice of Shelbiana;
eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept.
16, in the Lucas & Hall Funeral Home Chapel with Rick
Hisle and Morgan Chapman officiating. Burial will follow

Lexington, died Thurs. Sept. 15, 2005 at the University
of Kentucky, Medical Center following a long illness
with Mysthenia Gravis and also after suffering a tragic
fall at his home. He is survived by his wife of 52
years, Geraldine "Gerry" Childers Sewell, and one son,
Ricky Neil Sewell, Lexington. He was a member and former
chairman of the board at the Campton First Church of
God, was retired from I.B.M. and was a farmer. He was
born Jan. 17, 1932 at Hollonsville, KY, in Wolfe County,
and was the son of the late Price Sewell and Elsie
Hollon Sewell. He is also survived by one
brother-in-law, Eugene and his wife, Margarit Childers,
Winchester, KY, one sister-in-law, Justine and husband,
Ray Harris, Campton, KY, and several nieces and nephews,
including Barry and his wife, Joan Harris and their son,
Barry Ray and his wife, Jona, Campton, and Brenton
Harris and daughter, Cadence Harris and children, Wendy
(Steve) Oliver and their son, Hunter, Campton, Jeremy
Harris, Campton, and Joshua, Korea, Sherry and Megon
Childers, Georgetown, KY, and Tom Harris, Campton, KY.
He is also survived by special friends and neighbors for
38 years, Robert and Anna Varble, Lexington, and was
privileged to be an acting grandfather to their children
and grandchildren, Robin Varble, Louisville, KY, and his
daughter, Morgan, Lexington, Darrren and wife, Jennifer
Varble and daughter, McKenzie, Lexington, and Denise and
husband Greg Yates and their children, Grissom and
Ainsley, Winchester, KY, and a host of other friends and
relatives to mourn his passing. Funeral services will be
held at 2 pm Mon. Sept. 19, at the Porter and Son
Funeral Directors with Bro. Doyle Thomas and Bro. David

the daughter of the late Jerry and Eva Moore Gayheart.
She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her

in Paintsville Hospital. She was born Apr 16, 1903, in
Morgan Co, a daughter of the late Morgan and Frona Smith
Wright. Her husband, Arnold T Skaggs, preceded her in
death. Surviving are 2 daughters, Esta Vanover, and

Slone, George
1908-1996 Retired construction worker and farmer George
Slone, 87, died Saturday, February 10, 1996 at Highlands
Regional Medical Center. Mr. Slone was born November 26,
1908, in Johnson County, the son of the late Everett and
Fanny Johnson Slone. He was a member of Sitka Freewill
Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife Sylvia
Slone; one son, Graden Slone of Sitka; two daughters,
Pamela O'Bryan and Charlotte Reynolds, both of Sitka;
one brother, Wilburn Lorene Slone of Fr. Myers, Florida;
one sister, Laura Imogene Brown of Davin, West Virginia;
and 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral
services were held Tuesday, February 13, 1996 at Sitka
Freewill Baptist Church, with Jim McKenzie and Denvil
Mollette officiating. Burial was in Slone Cemetery.

- was born Feb 9, 1915 in Morgan Co, KY. The son of the
late Rev. Winston Vermont Smith and Jannie Dexter Smith.
He departed this life on Aug 6, 1978 in West Liberty at
the age of 63 yrs, 5 mo and 27 days. He was united in
marriage to Menthola Justice on Mar 14, 1937. To this
union 5 children were born. 1 son, Jamie, preceded him
in death. Surviving is 1 daughter, Arlene Frances Smith,
3 sons, Charles B Smith Jr, William J and Benjamin
Smith, 7 grandchildren. Also surviving is 2 sisters,
Mrs. Ronnie K Ferguson, and Sophrona D Crisp and 1

1918, he was the son of Thomas Smith and Liddie Williams
Smith. He was united in marriage to Goldie Berker, Jan
15, 1938. To this union was born 11 children, Mildred
Trimble, Ira Smith, Annalia Holbrook, Curtis Smith,
Billy Smith, Patty Hollon, Bobby Smith, Sammy Smith,
Debbie Barbie, Valerie Smith at home, David Smith

survived by his widow, Nickeytie and 2 boys and 3
daughters, Daranto Smith, Junior Smith, Mrs. Billie

Smith, Rosie Mae Harlow
-73, of Ezel, died Wednesday, Aug.31,2005, at her
residence. Born on June 4, 1932, Rosie was the daughter
of the late Wesley Harlow and Lois J. Easterling Harlow.
She was a retired cook at East Valley Elementary School,
and ,was a member of Pine Grove Community Church, in
Ezel. In addition to her parents, Rosie was preceded in
death by. one grandson, Blake Cooley, one sister,
Juanita Harlow and one brother, Donald Roberts.
Survivors include her husband, Amos Smith, of Ezel; four
daughters, Barbara Seab and husband, Howard, of Roxie,
Miss., Teresa Ferguson and husband, Ray, of West
Liberty, Laura Phipps and husband, Rick, of Hobbs, N.M.,
and Nadine Lear and husband, Carlton, Lexington ; four
sons, Bob Smith and wife, Brenda, of Wellington, Ralph
Smith and wife, Linda, of Ezel, Paul Smith and wife,
Susan, of Paris, and Rufus Smith and wife, Lynne, of La
Grange; one brother, Lawrence Harlow, of Ezel; 32
grandchildren and 27great-grandchildren.Services were
conducted 2: 30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2, at Herald &
Stewart & Halsey Chapel, in West Liberty, with Bro.
Garrie Stamper officiating. Burial followed at Ezel
Cemetery, in Ezel, with Herald & Stewart & Halsey
Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were
Chris Smith, Bobby Ferguson, Paul Ferguson, Matthew
Smith, Billy Ferguson, Lincoln Havens and McGarett

She was united in marriage to Jason Sparks, who passed
away in 1954. To this union was born 7 children, 3 sons
preceded her in death. Her baby boy (Earl Sparks) was

-1946-2005-Funeral services were held Sunday, August 28,
3 p.m. at the Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel for
Carol Ann Queen Spears, 59, of Paintsville, Ky., who
passed away Thursday, August 25 at her residence. Mrs.
Spears was born January 11, 1946 in Logan W.Va.,
daughter of the late Lacy and Flora Castle Queen. She
was a homemaker. Surviving are two daughters, Nikki
Spears and Kellie Bryant, both of Paintsville, Ky.; two
sisters, Betty Stephens of Wisconsin and Nancy Gillum of
Hearts, W.Va.; three grandchildren; and a host of
nieces, nephews and cousins. The service was officiated
by Wendell Ison, with burial in the Richmond Cemetery on

Spradlin, Juanita Blair -1936-2005-Funeral services were
held Sunday, August 14, 2 p.m. at the Jones-Preston
Funeral Home for Juanita Blair Spradlin, 69, of Leander,
Ky., who passed away Thursday, August 11 at her
residence. Mrs. Spradlin was born February 21, 1936 in
Johnson County, Ky., daughter of the late Virgil and
Bessie Blair. She was a homemaker. She was also preceded
in death by one brother, Weldon Blair, and two
grandsons, Zachary Nathaniel and Bradley Isaiah
Spradlin. Surviving are her husband, James Denny
Spradlin of Leander, Ky.; two sons, Kenneth Edward
Spradlin of Leander, Ky., and Tracy Lynn Spradlin of

Spradlin, Mary Jane (Selvage)
1881-1996 Mary Jane Spradlin, age 84 years, 5 months, 22
days, passed away at a local hospital at 11:15 P.M.,
Saturday, February 26, 1996. Mrs. Spradlin was born
September 4, 1881 in Johnson County, the daughter of the
late John and Martha Hitchcock Selvage. She lived at
Barnett's Creek, Kentucky, at the time of her death. She
was the wife of the late James Winfield Spradlin who
preceded her in death January 7, 1966. She is survived
by three sons, Crate Spradlin, Springfield, Ohio;
Thurman Spradlin, Orient, Ohio; Vern Spradlin,
Donaldsville, Ohio. Five daughters also survive, Mrs.
Fannie Williams, Mt. Sterling, Ohio ; Mrs. Dessie Horn,
Staffordsville, Ky.; Mrs. Dorothy Adams, Salyersville,
Ky.; Mrs. Daisy Sheild, Lexington, Indiana; Mrs.
Josephine Horn, Barnetts Creek, Ky. She is also survived
by one sister and four brothers, Mrs. Malta Ratliff,
Denver, Ky.; Jesse Selvage, Ohio; Add Selvage, W. Van
Lear, Ky.; Cal Selvage, Van Lear, Ky.; Clate Selvage,
Denver, Ky. Half sisters surviving are, Mrs. Stella
Lloyd, Ohio; Mrs. Gracie Mishon, Ohio; Mrs.Zora Ward,
Staffordsville, Ky.; Mrs. Myrtle Fairchild, Paintsville,
Ky.; Mrs. Tavia Ealey, Paintsville, Ky. There are also 4
half brothers: Wade Selvage - Ashland, Ky., Ford Selvage
- West Virginia, Dewey Selvage - Staffordsville, Ky.,
Kelly Selvage - Ohio, Also surviving are 34
grandchildren, 64 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great
grandchild. Mrs.
Spradlin accepted Christ through person witness in 1965.

Stafford, James Robert ‘Bob’
-1925-2005James Robert “Bob” Stafford, age 81, of
Preston Estates, Paintsville, Ky., departed this life
Thursday, September 15, 2005 at the Paul B. Hall Medical
Center, Paintsville, Ky. Bob was born March 24, 1925 in
Boyd County, Ky., the son of the late Proctor J. and Osa
Stewart Stafford. Bob was a retired real estate agent
and had served with the U.S. Navy. He served as
magistrate of District 2 and was a member of the
Paintsville City Council. He also served as police judge
of Paintsville and was Johnson County Judge pro tem. Bob
was an active member of the VFW, where he was recognized
as the 1989-90 Officer of the Year. Other notable honors
include being named a Kentucky Colonel and honorary
clerk of the Kentucky Court of Appeals. He was also a
member of the Masonic Lodge. Bob is survived by his
wife, Anita Johnson Stafford; three sons, James R.
Stafford Jr. of Kalamazoo, Mich., Ricky Lee Stafford of
Pikeville, Ky., and Michael J. “Dip” Stafford of
Paintsville, Ky.; one daughter, Linda Jane Pack of
Nicholasville, Ky.; two brothers, P. J. Stafford of
Tampa, Fla., and Glen Stafford of Kingsley, Mich.; and
two sisters, Etta Jo Mason of Traverse City, Mich., and
Patricia Griffith of Paintsville, Ky. Bob was a loving
grandfather to seven grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren. Bob was a kind and caring person,
always wanting all to have plenty and do well. His
friendly smile and warm handshake will be missed by all
he came in contact with. He will be greatly missed by
his loving family and many friends who knew and loved
him. Burial was in the Lakeview Memorial Cemetery at
Staffordsville, Ky. Arrangements under the direction of
the Jones-Preston Funeral Home of Paintsville, Ky.

Stapleton, Herman
1919-1996 Paintsville Funeral Home was in charge of
arrangements for Herman Stapleton, 76, who died February
21 1996 at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center. Mr.
Stapleton was born August 10, 1919, in Johnson County,
the son of the late Harry and Bertha Stapleton. He was a
miner and member of the Pentecostal Church. He was also
preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Dixon Stapleton,
in December 1984. Surviving are one son, Joe Stapleton
of Sitka; five daughters, Ann Crum of Boons Camp,,
Maxine Stepp and Elsie Tackett, both of, Paintsville,
Hermalee Cisco of
Staffordsville and Ida M. Fariman of Marion, Ohio; one

-1913-2005-Funeral services were held Tuesday,
September 13, 1 p.m. at the Phelps & Son Funeral Home
Chapel for Virgil Edgar Stapleton, 92, of Van Lear, Ky.,
who passed away Saturday, September 10 at Highlands
Regional Medical Center in Prestonsburg, Ky. Mr.
Stapleton was born April 24, 1913 in Johnson County,
Ky., son of the late Grover Cleveland Stapleton and
Arminta Johnson. He was a WW II veteran and a member of
the Van Lear Masonic Lodge #885 F & AM. He was also
preceded in death by his wife, Christina Wetzel
Stapleton. Surviving are one daughter, Janice Kaye
Stapleton of Van Lear, Ky.; and one brother, Dick
Stapleton of Dayton, Ohio. The service was officiated by
Donnie Patrick, with burial in the Highland Memorial
Park at Staffordsville, Ky. Military services were held

Story, Larry Pershing,
- 1945-2005 MOREHEAD - Larry Pershing Story, 59, of
Hillsboro, passed away Saturday, August 6, 2005, at the
V. A. Medical Center in Lexington, KY. He was born
December 18, 1945, in Maysville, KY, and was the son of
the late Pershing Crain Story and Dorothy Vice Story
Denton.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death
by a sister, Anna Jean Denton. Mr. Story is survived by
one daughter, Jill (Blake) Price of Flemingsburg, KY;
two sons, Brian (Patricia) Story of Jacksonville,
Arkansas, and Jacob Story of Alexandria, KY; three
grandchildren, Luke Story, John Story and Caroline
Price; and a sister, Sandra (Norman) Harn of Hillsboro,
KY
Mr. Story was a Farmer's Deposit Bank employee in
Flemingsburg, KY, from 1972-1991. He began as assistant
cashier and moved through the ranks to become senior
loan officer and executive vice president. He was a
member of the Kentucky Bankers Association and served in
various statewide offices and committees, including
being the President of Kentucky Bankers Association
Group 8. Mr. Story was a graduate of Fleming County High
School, Morehead State University, University of
Kentucky School of Banking, and Louisiana State
University Graduate School of Banking of the South. He
was also a lifelong farmer. Mr. Story was a past
president and director of the Fleming County Chamber of
Commerce, a Kentucky Colonel and Honorary Secretary of
State. Mr. Story served in the U.S. Air Force from
1968-1972. He was nominated and selected for assignment
to the selectively manned 1st Helicopter Squadron that
transported high-ranking military and civilian
government personnel. He was selected twice airman of
the month and once airman of the quarter. He also
received the Air Force Commendation Medal .
Funeral services will be conducted 3:30 p.m. Tuesday,
August 9, 2005, at Hutton Funeral Home with Brother Jim
Hamm officiating; burial will be in the Hillsboro
Cemetery with full military rites conducted at the
graveside by Flemingsburg American Legion Post No. 5 and
Flemingsburg VFW Post No. 1834. Serving as pallbearers
are Jeff Vice, Mark Crain, Ronnie Bramel, Bruce Gillum,
Johnny Gillum, and Eddie Prater. Visitation is after 6
p.m. Monday at Hutton Funeral Home, Hillsboro, KY.
John L. Scaggs,
97, Dies, Rites on Friday. John L. Scaggs, 97, of 311
Grove St., Fairborn, died at 10:22 p.m. Monday, June 28,
1982 in Christel Manor Nursing Home where he had been a
resident for two weeks. An area resident for 25 years,
he was born November 12, 1884 in Morgan County,
Kentucky, the son of Jerry M. and Rhoda Adkins Skaggs.
He retired from farming in 1958.Survivors include his
daughters, Rhoda Stephens of Fairborn, Rosie Elliott of
Orleans, Indiana, and Genoa Murphy of Weston, Ohio; a
stepson, Ruby Smith of Portsmouth, Ohio; a
step-daughter, Goldie Eldridge of Sandy Hook, Kentucky;
24 grandchildren and 53 great-grandchildren. he was
preceded in death by his wife, Carrie, in 1958. He was
also preceded in death by a son, a daughter, a brother
and five sisters. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m.
Thursday in the Burcham Funeral Home. Services will be
held at 1 p.m. Friday in the International Faith Church,
formerly the Southern Church of God, 20 South Drive,
with the Rev. Vinson Turner officiating. The body will
lie in state two hours before the service on Friday.
Burial will be in Byron Cemetery.

Sturgill, Daniel Brett
-32, of Virgie, died Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2005, at
Pikeville Medical Center. He was born Nov. 11, 1972, a
son of Danny Sturgill and the late Paula Gwynn Tackett
Sturgill. He worked as an investment counselor at Calton
and Associates. He is survived by his step mother,
Lorene Sturgill of Long Fork; two daughters, Megan
Sturgill of Virgie, and Hailey Sturgill of Clay City;
one brother, Cody Sturgill of Long Fork; one sister,
Annetta Robinson of Pikeville; his maternal grandmother,
Julia Tackett of Long Fork; his paternal grandmother
Cleatha Sturgill of Paintsville. Funeral services will
be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 4, at the Hall and Jones
Funeral Home with Church of Christ ministers
officiating. Burial will follow in the Frank Tackett
Cemetery at Long Fork. Arrangements are under direction
of Hall and Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.

-1923-2005-Funeral services will be held Saturday,

Home Chapel in Port Orange, Fla., for Julia H. Swartz,
82, of Ormond Beach, Fla., who passed away Tuesday,
August 23 at the Hospice Care Center in Port Orange,
Fla. Mrs. Swartz was born in Paintsville, Ky., and she
had lived in Ormond Beach, Fla., since 1970. She helped
oversee the kitchen services for Calvary Assembly of God
Church in Ormond Beach, and helped prepare meals for
those in need. She was preceded in death by her
grandson, Roger L. Swartz II. Surviving are her husband,
G.L. Swartz of Ormond Beach, Fla.; three sons, Larry
Swartz of San Diego, Calif., Roger (Linda) Swartz of
DeLeon Springs, and Phillip Swartz of Ormond Beach,
Fla.; three brothers, Samuel Hazelett of Ypsilanti,
Mich., and Clyde and Thomas Hazelett, both of
Paintsville, Ky.; three sisters, Mattie Wright of
Daytona Beach, Fla., Fannie Louise Ehrman of Shelby,
Ohio, and Sara Ann Hazelett of Fort Wayne, Ind. The
