“Uncle” Jesse Gregory Passes To The Beyond.
On Sunday, August 12, 1934, one of Muhlenburg County's most prominent and beloved citizens, reached the point on life's pathway where time and eternal meet, and “Uncle Jesse Gregory,” as he was affectionately known by his innumerable friends, passed from this mundane sphere into eternity.
Few men in the county were more highly respected than J.R. Gregory. Even up to the time when he had reached eventide of life, he was a tireless worker, a devoted husband, a kind and considerate father and a usefull citizen.
His smiling countenance and soft, pleasant voice, will be missed by hundreds of his intimate and personal friends in and around the mining camps of Cleaton and Bevier, where he sold ice and conducted his business for many years.
When “Uncle Jesse Gregory” shuffled off this mortal cell, Muhlenburg County lost one of his best citizens, a loving and devoted wife lost a faithfull husband, ten children lost a real “daddy,” and the community an inspiring leader in every movement for civic improvement.
He is gone but not forgotten. He is dead but has just begun to live.
- A tribute by W. O. Smith
