Fine Old Man
Aged Citizen of Muhlenberg Passes Away
Abram Howerton Dies at Age of 78, and Member of Presbyterian Church 52 Years
Central City, Ky., April 5. - Mr. Abram Howerton, one of the oldest residents of the county, died at his home in this city after a protracted illness of a complication of diseases. In the death of Mr. Howerton, Central City suffers a loss, not so much by his activity in city affairs, as he had reached the age of three schore and ten before he became a citizen, but by the good he did in his every day life. He was indeed an exemplary citizen and the young men of the day would do well accept as a standard on which to pattern their future, the entire life of this gentleman of the old school. Courteous, affable, gentle as a woman yet strong as a lion in the advocacy of the principles in which he believed his daily life which was a funeral oration far better than could be preached by man.
Abram Howerton was the son of Thomas and Tena (Roll) Howerton and first saw the light of day at Paradise, Muhlenberg county, on the 17th day of January 1834. All of his life has been spent in this county and at the age of 27 years he married Miss Sallie Sharpe of Nelson, Ky. In their hospitable, country home near Nelson they reared a family of two daughters and five sons, all of whom survive the father, except Edward who died several years ago. The living children are: Miss Jannie Howerton, Mrs. T.G. Morgan, Messrs. Tom Howerton of this city, Henry Howerton of Greenville, Sam Howerton of Fredonia and Andrew Howerton of Paducah. The aged wife, 73 years old, and who for almost a lifetimes has had this good man for a companion also survives. The funeral services were held at the residence, and at Mt. Olivet church where the deceased as a boy was a member. The services were conducted by Rev. Howerton, his nephew, and was largely attended.
