From: AlEvans99@aol.com Date: Mon, 12 Jun 2000 23:15:30 EDT Subject: [KYHOPKIN-L] Hopkins County Folk Lore Story of the Week I have just finished reading Carolyn Buntin Everland's wonderful story "GOIN' ONS AT THE CUT-OFF" and enjoyed it very much. This is for those interested in where that place got it's name. In 1845 Ben and Joseph White had a water grist mill on the Hopkins Co. side of the Tradewater River, on the road described in her story. That road until about 1997 was named White School/Evans Mill Rd. "CUT-OFF" was the place where the cut off slough, which supplied water to the mill was located. In 1870, Josiah Alfred Evans (my great-grandfather) operated the mill. Ben White was the teacher at the White school, next door. The place where the road cross the river was called Evans Ford. Those interested will find copies of census records and an old survey map supporting this on my web site. http://www.geocities.com/al_evans Al Evans Sr, (MI)
