Calhoun, Joe

Joe Calhoun, 79, Veteran, Dies in Elmonte, Calif.

Joe Calhoun, 79, died Friday, April 18, in Elmonte, Calif. at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Donald Kelly. “Uncle Joe” as he was known here, went to visit his daughter a few weeks ago and died while there. Funeral services were held Sunday, April 20, at 9:30 a.m. in Elmonte.

Mr. Calhoun was a resident of Central City.

Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Paris Haynes, Springfield, Tenn., Mrs. James Morrison, Owensboro, and Mrs. Donald Kelly, Elmonte, Calif. He is related by marriage to Mrs. Stanley Kelm, Central City.

Mr. Calhoun was a retired carpenter and a veteran of the Spanish American War. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church.

Campbell, Katie May

Campbell, Nettie Coche

Central City - Mrs. Nettie Coche Campbell, 95, died at 6:45 a.m. Monday at her home. She was born Aug. 24, 1875, in Muhlenberg County and was a member of the Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are two sons, William D. Campbell and Jean H. Campbell, both of Central City; one sister, Mrs. Clarence Fortney of Hopkinsville.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in the Tucker Funeral Home by the Rev. Richard Ramsey, pastor of First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery.

The body is at the funeral home.

Campbell, William

Died, on the 20th inst. at Col. Pattersons in this town, Col. William Campbell, of Muhlenberg county, and late senator in the state legislature, from that district.

Capps, Lavinia

Aged Woman Dead
Mrs. Lavinia Capps, a well known woman of Central City, died at that place Saturday morning. She had been ill for sometime and only about two months ago suffered a stroke of paralysis. She will be buried today.

Cardwell, Susan A.

Services for Mrs. Susan A. Cardwell, 79, of Drakesboro, who died Sunday in Owensboro, will be held at 2 p.m. today [Tuesday] at the James H. Davis Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. L. C. Gray, pastor of Glenville Baptist Church. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery at Central City.

The body is at the funeral home in Owensboro.

Carter, Donald Edward

Car mishap kills youth

Graham, Ky. - Donnie Carter, 8, of Greenville was killed about 3:35 p.m. here Tuesday when he ran in front of a car on Kentucky 175, according to state police in Madisonville.

Police said James Spinks, 51, of Graham was driving south on the highway when Carter ran in front of the car and, in an apparent attempt to save himself, braced himself and grabbed the front fender of the car.

Carter was dragged 120 feet and was dead on arrival at Muhlenberg Community Hospital, police said.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Gary's Funeral Home in Greenville.

Graham, Ky. - Donald Edward Carter, 8, of Route 1, Graham, was killed about 3:35 p.m. Tuesday when he ran in front of a car on Kentucky 175 near here. He was born Feb. 27, 1968, in Joliet, Ill., and was a third grade student at Graham Elementary School.

Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Odvert F. Carter; two brothers, Odvert F. Carter Jr. and James D. Carter, both of Graham, and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Louise Groves of Greenville, Fannie Carter of Logan, W. Va., Floyd Conley of Harts Creek, W. Va., and Marie Wickens of Douglas, Wyo.

Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Lee Hill Holiness Church, Route 1, Graham. Burial in Cherry Grove Cemetery, Route 3, Greenville. Visitation after 10 a.m. today at Gary's Funeral Home, Greenville.

Cartwright, Thurman Johnny

T.J. Cartwright, 61, Dies Jan. 9

Belton - Thurman Johnny Cartwright, 61, of Belton, died at his home Wednesday, Jan. 9 at 3:30 p.m.

A retired miner, he was born in Muhlenberg County May 15, 1912 and was a member of Mud River Union General Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Laura Jane Cartwright of Belton; three sons, Billy C. and Clarence Cartwright of Belton and Johnny C. Cartwright Jr. of Evansville; three daughters, Mrs. Shirley Reynolds of Beechmont, Mrs. Margaret Mayes of Greenfield, Ind. and Mrs. Judy Martin of Greenville; 22 grandchildren; five brothers, Carlie Cartwright of Evansville, Artie Cartwright and Jesse C. Cartwright of Belton, L.J. Cartwright of Bowling Green and Vern C. Cartwright of Chicago; four sisters, Mrs. Annie Woodall of Greenville, Mrs. Belle McKinney of Morgantown, Mrs. Eurcy Middleton of Evansville and Mrs. Donnie Motley of Bowling Green.

Funeral services were Saturday at 2 p.m. at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home with the Rev. William Mallory in charge, assisted by the Rev. Leamon Mefford. Burial was in Mud River Union Cemetery.

Carver, Oakland

Oakland Carver, 43, is buried Jan. 1

Rosewood - Oakland Carver, 43, died at his home in Rosewood at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30, following an illness of several weeks.

He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Claude Brigance, Dunmor, Route 2; two brothers, Otis Carver, Dunmor, and Aubry Carver, of Sacramento.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, Jan. 1, at 1:30 p.m. in the Rosewood Methodist Church by the Rev. H. T. Sharpe, assited by the Rev. Lee Ward. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Carver, Sherman

Sherman Carver, 84, Beech Creek, Dies

Beech Creek - Sherman Carver, 84, retired miner, died at his home at 12:41 p.m. Friday following a three weeks illness. He is survived by three sons, Dayton Carver, of Beech Creek; A.B. Carver, Evansville; and Clyde Carver, Louisville; daughter, Mrs. Woody Newman, Beech Creek; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Beech Creek Methodist church, by the Rev. Melvin Johnson, and the Rev. Freddie Denton. Burial was in Jackson cemetery.

Case, Genevieve

Mrs. Genevieve Case, 57, of 4932 Feys Drive, formerly of Greenville, died at 2 p.m. Wednesday at her home.

She is survived by her husband, Willard Case, and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cleveland Furman, of Greenville.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Gary's Funeral Home in Greenville, with burial in the Skipworth family cemetery near there.

Casebier, Ella

Funeral services for Mrs. Casebier
Mrs. Ella Casebier, widow of William Henry Casebier, died suddenly on December 26.

Funeral services for Mrs. Ella Casebier, a long-time resident of Central City, and widow of William Henry Casebier, were held Wednesday, December 28, from the residence on Fourth Street, conducted by the Rev. O.P. Bush, pastor of the Central City Baptist Church, of which she was a member.

Mrs. Caesbier was stricken on December 26, at her home and died suddenly. Her husband preceded her in death, he dying on December 24, 1935, his death being suddenly.

Mrs. Casebier conducted a tailoring shop in Central City over 25 years.

Burial was in Fairmount cemetery.

Surviving is one son, Harry Casebier, who made his home with his mother.

Casebier, Hortense Padgett

Mrs. Hortense Casebier, 95, dies in Louisville

Mrs. Hortense Padgett Casebier, 95, died Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 11:15 p.m. at her residence in Louisville.

She was a member of Nelson Creek Baptist Church. She moved to Louisville in 1943.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Lynn (Madeline) Redmon and Mrs. John (Katherine) Sproul; two brothers, Edwin and Paul Casebier; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be Friday, Sept. 8 at 10:30 a.m. in Louisville. Burial will be in Louisville Memorial Gardens.

Casebier, James R.

James R. Casebier expired June 2 at his home in the Nelson Creek neighborhood. Mr. Casebier was born December 31, 1876. He married Alice Staples Casebier and his wife preceded him in death by about four weeks.

Mr. Casebier has lived all his life in the Nelson vicinity and is survived by one brother, William G., and three sons, Roy, Kenneth and Charlie

Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Elbert Winkler. Interment was in the Nelson Creek Baptist cemetery.

He leaves a host of friends and will be greatly missed in his community.

Casebier, John Dunn

J.D. Casebier Dies at Advanced Age
Wounded at Murphreesboro and Was in Other Fierce Battles of Civil War

J.D. Casebier died last Friday afternoon at his home on Fifth Street in this city at the advanced age of 83 years and four days. He had been ill for several weeks of diseases incident to old age.

He was born and reared in Muhlenberg County and was an unusually successful farmer until 1917 when he moved to Central City to reside. He served with Company H, 11th Kentucky Infantry during the Civil War and was in some of the hardest fought battles of the war. At the battle of Murphreesboro he was wounded in the knee.

At the age of 18 he joined the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church and remained a member throughout the remainder of his life. Among survivors are his widow, two sons, G.W. Casebier of Waxahachie, TX and T.B. Casebier of Central City; one daughter, Miss Sallie Casebier of Central City.

Rev. H.L. Thornton, pastor of the local Baptist Church, conducted the funeral Saturday afternoon at the home. Interment was in Fairmount Cemetery the same day. E.J. Anderson was funeral director.

Casebier, John P.

Death of John P. Casebier

Mr. John P. Casebier, 63 years old, passed away near here Monday. Death was due to a complication of diseases. He had been in ill health for some time.

Burial was in Ebenezer cemetery, Tuesday. He is survived by his widow, two sons, and four daughters, all of Russellville.

Casebier, Susan R.

Former citizen 101 years of age died in Louisville
Mrs. Susan R. Casebier died at home of daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Leachman

At the age of 101, Mrs. Susan R. Casebier, a former resident of Central City and a native of Muhlenberg County, died of infirmities Tuesday at her home in Louisville. She moved from Central City to Louisville about 20 years ago to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Leachman. She had been active and in good health until an illness four years ago.

Mrs. Casebier was born February 14, 1838, on a farm where the town of Browder is now located, the residence, it is said, being on or near the site where the Browder L.&N. depot now stands. She could relate the pioneer days, of the wilderness, and of the wild animals that roamed in the county. She recalled the days when a gun would have to be carried for protection from wild animals when going from her home to the spring for water when a girl. She had lived through four wards, the war with Mexico, Civil War, Spanish-American War and the World War, and had lived from the ox cart days and wilderness paths to see modern highways and modern forms of travel.

The body was brough to Central City Wednesday. Funeral services were held at the home of her grandson, Harry Casebier on Fourth Street, conducted by the Rev. O. P. Bush, pastor, of the Baptist Church, which church she had been a member for many years.

Burial was in Fairmount cemetery.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Leachman and Miss Minerva Casebier, Louisville; two grandsons, Herbert Leachman, of Denver, Colo., and Harry Casebier, this city; one granddaughter, Mrs. J. F. Johnson, Louisville.

Cason, Ina Viola Fortney

Mrs. Ina Cason Dies in New York

Mrs. Ina Viola Fortney Cason, 83, of Middletown, NY died Tuesday, May 27, in Middletown's Horton Hospital following a long illness.

She was the daughter of T. Q. and Matilda Eades Fortney and was born Sept. 25, 1885 in Mercer Station in Muhlenberg County.

She was married May 9, 1918 in Central City to Robert Velore Cason, who died in 1955. She lived in Middletown nine years and had formerly lived in Louisville and Central City. She was a member of the Baptist Church.

Surviving is a daughter, Mrs. Nell Kettig of Middletown, NY; four grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Her ashes will be brought to Central City for burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Casteel, Archie D.

Mrs. Stewart's Brother, 63, Dies

Hartford - Archie D. Casteel, 63, of Hartford Route 2, died Thursday, Aug. 21 in Ohio County Hospital.

He was a retired employe of Faultless Caster Co., Evansville, Ind., and was a member of Washington United Methodist Church, Hartford.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Prudie Browning Casteel; two sons, Lawrence Casteel of High Ridge, Mo. and Herman Casteel of Hartford; two daughters, Mrs. Mildred Smith of Hartford, and Mrs. Wilma L. Myers of Olaton; eight grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; brother, Marvin Casteel of Hartford; three sisters, Mrs. Minnie Stewart of Bremen, Mrs. Lena Albin of Dale, Ind. and Mrs. Gola Huff of Owensboro.

Services were at 2 p.m. Saturday in Hartford with burial in Patterson Cemetery in Ohio County.

Castleberry, Mary Ann

Central City - Mrs. Mary Ann “Annabell” Castleberry, 57, died at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Muhlenberg County Hospital in Greenville.

Born May 16, 1913, in Muhlenberg County, she was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Donald Ray of Nashville, Tenn.l a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Doss of Powderly; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Vernon Roark of Gorham, Mo.; and three sisters, Mrs. Martha E. West and Mrs. Lucille James, both of Route 2, Central City, and Mrs. Thelma Stirsman of Route 3, Central City.

Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Tucker Funeral Home by the Rev. Roy Geary, pastor of the Cherry Hill Baptist Church, and the Rev. Ora DeArmond, pastor of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home.

Caton, Nellie Florence

Sebree - Mrs. Nellie Florence Caton, 66, died at 2 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, at Hopkins County Hospital.

Surviving are five sons, Kenneth of Corydon, Lindy of Chandler, Ind., Bobby, address not available, Jackie of Henderson and Ford of Morganfield; daughter, Mrs. Dottie O'Nan of Sebree; two brothers, Alvie Burton of Newburgh, Ind., and A.D. Burton of Greenville; three sisters, Mrs. Vera Nussmeir of Evansville, Mrs. Frances McGraw of Dixon and Mrs. Sue Johnson of Alaughters [Slaughters?]; mother, Mrs. Queenie Melton Burton of Dixon; 18 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Joint services were held with Mrs. Caton's husband, who died Sunday, Feb. 5, were held at 2 p.m. Friday in Sebree with burial in Springdale Cemetery.

Cavanaugh, Rosa Belle

Drakesboro - Mrs. Rosa Belle Cavanaugh, 82, died in Hopkins County Hospital in Madisonville at 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday. She was born March 14, 1889, in Muhlenberg County and was a member of Paradise Baptist Church.

Surviving are a son, Carl Cavanaugh, and two daughters, Mrs. Lois Tuner and Mrs. Katherine Tabb, all of Drakesboro; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Carlos Smith of Drakesboro.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at the Tucker Funeral Home, by the Rev. Fred Fox. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The body is at the funeral home in Central City.

Cayce, Claude Brockman

Claude B. Cayce Buried March 22

Claude Brockman Cayce, 78, a retired U.S. Naval Ordnance Station millright, died at 1:45 a.m. Wednesday, March 19, at St. Anthony Hospital in Louisville.

He retired in 1960. He was a member of the Edenside Christian Church and was a native of Hopkinsville.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Friday in Louisville with graveside services at 11 a.m. Saturday at Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City with the Rev. C.W. Duncan officiating.

Survivors include his wife, the former Josie Lena Anderson of Central City; son, Claude Brockman Cayce Jr. of Louisville; two brothers, I.B. Cayce of Central City Route 1 and Douglas Cayce of Hopkinsville; sister, Mrs. Finis Stamper of Las Vegas, Nev.; one granddaughter.

Mr. Cayce, the son of the late Irving and Robbie Rives [Cayce] of Hopkinsville, had lived in Louisville 20 years.
