Leach, Clara Taylor

Funeral Services For Mrs. Leach
Mrs. W.P. Leach Dies at Home on Morehead Street; Interment In Ohio County.

Mrs. W.P. Leach, 79 years old, died at her residence on Morehead street last Saturday evening at 9:30 o'clock of complications. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Taylor, and was born and reared in Ohio county, moving to this city in 1917.

In January, 1878, Mr. and Mrs. Leach were united in marriage, her husband dying in March, 1916, after which she moved to Central City and bought her residence on Morehead street, where she lived.

Surviving are four children, J.L. Leach, O.L. Leach and J.E. Leach, all of Central City, and Mrs. D.T. Black, who lives on the old homestead where they were all reared in Ohio county; two brothers, P.B. Taylor, Hartford, and E.L. Taylor, Beaver Dam.

Funeral services were held from the Liberty Church, in Ohio county, Mrs. Leach uniting with this church in childhood, and interment was in the church cemetery by the side of her husband, Monday. Funeral services were conducted by her former pastor, the Rev. J.S. Buckner and the Rev. P.M. Spears, pastor of the Central City Methodist church.

Lear, Beatrice Jewel

Central City - Beatrice Jewel Lear, 63, of Central City, died Monday, May 1, 1989, at her home. She was born in Muhlenberg County and was a member of First Christian Church, Central City.

Survivors include four sons, Charles K. and Ronnie D. Lear, both of Central City, Michael D. Lear of North Dakota and Chester O. Lear of Bremen; her mother, Mamie Jewel Phillips of Chicago; five grandchildren; a sister, Mattie Williams of Central City; two half brothers, Jimmy Phillips of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Jerry Phillips of Chicago; and a half sister, Patricia Hinkle of Chicago.

Services are at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Tucker Funeral Home, Central City.

Burial in Fairmont Cemetery, Central City. Visitation after 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Lear, Earnest

Greenville - Earnest Lear, 62, Route 2, Greenville, died Friday at 6:50 p.m. at the Muhlenberg Community Hospital. He was a retired coal miner.

Born in Todd County Dec. 7, 1908, he was a veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Larene Lear; a daughter, Mrs. Becky Phelps, Hammond, Ind.; four grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Ethel Middleton, Evansville, Ind., Mrs. Eura Harris, Browder, and Mrs. Mary Mann, Central City; and a brother, Robert, Greenville.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at the Gary Funeral Home by the Rev. Carl Pendley and the Rev. John Brandon. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Central City.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 1:30 p.m. today.

Lear, Jeffrey Dale

Central City boy, 3, dies Sept. 6 from auto injuries

Jeffrey Dale Lear, 3, died at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, in Hopkins County Hospital in Madisonville as the result of injuries received Friday evening, Sept. 1, in Drakesboro, when he was struck by a pick-up truck.

Lear and an 5-year-old girl, Melissa Rainwater of Drakesboro were walking along Broad Street in Drakesboro when they were struck by the truck driven by Dwayne Wester of Drakesboro.

According to Robert Stover of the Drakesboro Fire Department, Wester swerved to miss the girl's mother and the boy's grandmother, who were walking along the other side of the street. Neither adult was injured.

Miss Rainwater was treated from bruises at the Muhlenberg Community Hospital and released.

He was born in Muhlenberg County April 2, 1975.

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie Lear of Central City; brother, Brian Lear; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lear of Central City; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Mary Rainwater of Drakesboro; maternal great-grandmother, Mrs. Thelma Dukes of Browder; maternal great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Phillips of Central City; paternal great-grandmother, Mrs. Myrtle Lear of Drakesboro.

Funeral services were Friday at 2 p.m. at the First Christian Church with the pastor, Rod Marlow, and C.W. Duncan, in charge. Burial was in Fairmount Cemetery under the direction of Tucker Funeral Home.

Lear, Joseph A.

Greenville - Joseph A. Lear, 94, Route 1, died at 3:50 p.m. Sunday at the Muhlenberg Community Hospital after an illness of several weeks.

Born Oct. 9, 1873, he was a retired farmer.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Ruby Lear; three daughters, Mrs. Eula Holmes, Owensboro, Mrs. Lillie Groves, Greenville, and Mrs. Bertha Crick, Drakesboro; six sons, Will Lear, Graham, Estil Lear, Earlington, Walter Lear, Hammond, Ind., Johnny Lear, Jeffersonville, Ind., Joe Lear, Kirkmansville, and Elgan Lear, Greenville; 40 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren and a brother, Miles Lear, Greenville.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Sharon General Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Raymond Cornette. Burial will be in Yeargins Chapel Cemetery.

The body is at Gary's Funeral Home.

Central City - William W. Lear, 82, retired miner, died Thursday here in the home of a daughter, Mrs. Herbert Joines.

A native of Todd County, he is survived by his wife, Mrs. Nancy Carter Lear; two sons, T. H. Lear of Central City and Frank Lear of White Plains; two other daughters, Mrs. Albert Hope of Henderson and Mrs. Russell Walls, Hebron, Ind.; 27 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Jennie Joseph, Birmingham, Ala., Mrs. Mary Etley, Gibson City, Ill., and Mrs. Bertha Brown of Nashville, and a brother, Leonard Lear, Todd County.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Carroll Yarborough, pastor of the Green River Chapel Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Lee, Bonnie M.

Powderly - Mrs. Bonnie M. Lee, 56, of Powderly, died Saturday, Feb. 11, at 1:15 a.m. in Muhlenberg Community Hospital. She was born in Muhlenberg County Nov. 18, 1921.

Survivors include a daughter, Miss Ann Lee of Powderly; four sisters, Mrs. Evelyn McElvain of Dixon, Mrs. Maybell Vincent, Mrs. Josie Mitchell and Mrs. Uva Mitchell of Powderly; two half-sisters, Mrs. Hazel Baize of Central City and Mrs. Elna Whitaker of St. Louis.

Services were at 1 p.m. Monday at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Gene Harper officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Lee, Robert Edward

Robert Edward Lee, 81, died in the Muhlenberg Community Hospital here Thursday morning. The body was brought to Greenville Funeral Home, and will remain there until Friday afternoon, when it will be shipped to Hoxie, Ark., and will be buried at Alica, Ark., Sunday. Mr. Lee had been living with his daughter, Mrs. A.M. Golden, in White Plains, since the death of his wife. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. A.M. Golden, of White Plains; Mrs. L.M. Cross, Alica, Ark., and Mrs. W.L. McCullough, of Alexandria, La.

Dies At Home At Mercer

Mrs. Verda May Lee, 27 years old, died at her home at Mercer at 11:55 o'clock Tuesday night. A funeral service was held at the home Thursday afternoon, and interment was in the Dovey burying ground. Surviving are the husband and two children.

LeGrand, Merle Lucille

Central City - Mrs. Merle Lucille LeGrand, 47, died at Hardin Memorial Hospital in Elizabethtown at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. She was born Jan. 28, 1923, in Ohio County, and was a member of Nelson Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Betty Riley of Holland, Mich., Mrs. Shirley Tooley, Central City, and Mrs. Anna Walker of Chicago, Ill.; four sons, Charles LeGrand of Chicago, Jewell Lee LeGrand of Hammond, Ind., Gerald LeGrand of Evansville, Ind., and James LeGrand of Central City; 14 grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Jewell Moore of Route 2, Central City, and Mrs. Sophia Reynold of St. Louis, Mo.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Tucker Funeral Home conducted by the Rev. James Vincent, pastor of Nelson Creek Baptist Church, with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The body is at the funeral home in Central City.

W.C. Lemon Dies At Home In The Bethel Community

W.C. Lemon of the Bethel neighborhood, died last Monday afternoon of complications. Burial was in the Bethel Church cemetery. Mr. Lemon was a member of the Christian church and had been a Woodman of the World for nearly 35 years.

Level, L.

Mr. L. Level in his 77th. year, died at his home at Weir, March 1st, at 6 o'clock p.m. of the infirmities of old age. He was one of the few remaining old soldiers, and leaves a wife and several children. Burial at Cherry Grove, March 2d. at 12.30 p.m.

Former Slave, 118, Dies at Louisville

Louisville, Ky., April 3, (AP) - Arrangements were being made Wednesday to take the body of Delia Ann Lewis, Negro, 118, to Greenville for burial on the old plantation of James Ware [sic - Weir], where she was born.

“Aunt Delia” died Tuesday. She was never attended by a physician until her last illness. Her master, wealthy soldier and tobacconist, who operated a 1,000-acre plantation in Muhlenberg county, freed her and his other slaves before the Civil War.

“Aunt Delia” came here four years ago from Muhlenberg county. She claimed she once shook hands with Abraham Lincoln.
