Lile, John Allison

Former mayor of Central City dies at 79

John A. Lile, a former mayor of Central City, died Monday. He was 79.

“He was probably one of the best mayors we ever had,” said Hugh Sweatt Jr., who succeeded Lile as mayor.

Sweatt credited Lile with a fiscal responsibility that improved the city's finances. “He ran a real tight ship,” Sweatt said.

Sweaat was appointed mayor in July 1988 after Lile resigned because of health reasons. Sweatt said Lile had difficulty breathing when he climbed the steps to the Board of Council meetings, and sometimes had to be carried up the steps by city policemen.Lile himself was appointed to the council in 1979 to succeed former Mayor Don Garrett. Lile was elected to three terms as mayor.

Lile also served in various positions with the Western Kentucky Presbytery. At times he had served as interim minister for several churches, including the Bevier and Rockport Presbyterian Churches.

John Allison Lile was a 1933 graduate of Hughes-Kirk High School. He was a former merchant, and co-owned and managed Bivin's Market in Central City with his father-in-law, Claude Bivin, for many years.

Lile's wife, Ruby Bivin Lile, died in 1978.

Central City - John Allison, 79, of Central City died Monday, Jan. 2, 1995, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville. He was mayor of Central City from 1979-88 and formerly co-owned and managed Bivin's Market in Central City with his father-in-law, Claude Bivin, for many years. He was a member of Bevier Presbyterian Church; served in various capacities in the Western Kentucky Presbytery; was the first person to be ordained a lay minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA); and served as interim minister in several churches, including Bevier Presbyterian and Rockport Presbyterian. He was a 1933 graduate of Hughes-Kirk High School. His wife of 39 years, Ruby Bivin Lile, died in 1978. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Granville and David Lile.

Survivors include a son, John B. Lile of Frankfort; two daughters, Sue Rickard of Central City and Barbara Powell of Clifty; four grandchildren, Stephen Rickard of Central City, Kellie Staples of Bowling Green, Susan Hewatt of Satellite Beach, Fla., and Christian Curtis of Clifty; three stepgrandchildren, Randall Powell of Clifty, Gregory Powell of Nashville and Erin Hutcherson of Frankfort; two great-grandchildren; a brother, William “Diddle” Lile of Crofton; and two sisters, Dorothy Lewis of Central City and Jean Tipton of Owensboro.

Lile, Roma

Roma Lile, 81, Is Buried May 26

Roma Lile, 81, a retired farmer and resident of White Plains Route 1, died Saturday, May 24, at 12:15 p.m. in Muhlenberg Community Hospital.

He was born May 15, 1888 in Muhlenberg County and was a member of Cave Spring Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Delphine Lile of White Plains Route 1; two daughters, Mrs. Hazel Browning of Greenville Route 3 and Mrs. Marie Harper of Powderly; three sons, R.L. Lile of White Plains Route 1, Irvin Lile of Greenville Route 2 and J.G. Lile of Rockport; 12 grandchildren and give great-grandchildren; sister, Mrs. Blanch Knight of White Plains Route 1; brother, J.S. Lile of White Plains Route 1.

Services were Monday at 2 p.m. at Cave Spring Baptist Church with the Rev. Carlos Skaggs officiating, assisted by the Rev. Billy Spears. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Lile, Ruby Carol Bivin

Central City, Ky. - Mrs. Ruby Carol Bivin Lile, 57, of Central City died Wednesday at Muhlenberg Community Hospital, Greenville. She was born in Todd County and was a member of Bevier Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her husband, John A. Lile; a son, John Bivin of Frankfort, Ky.; two daughters, Sue Ann Rickard of Greenville and Barbara Curtis of Central City; four grandchildren, and a brother, Keith Bivin of Central City.

Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Tucker Funeral Home, Central City. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation after 5 p.m. today.

Lile, Wyatt

Abscess of Lung
Causes death of young Fruit Hill farmer.

Wyatt Lile, son of Mr. B.W. Lile, of near Fruit Hill, died Monday night after an illness of two months. He had been sick with typhoid fever, but abscess of the lung was the direct cause of his death. Deceased was twenty-four years old. The interment took place in Muhlenberg county Tuesday afternoon.

Liles, Cleo

Cleo Liles, 47, Is Buried Sunday

Depoy - Cleo Liles, 47, died at 4:30 p.m. Friday, March 10 at the Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville following a brief illness.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Oak Grove Baptist Church in Depoy with the Rev. James Vincent officiating, assisted by the Rev. G.W. Archer. Burial was in the church cemetery.

He was a member of the Oak Grove church and the Pond River Masonic Lodge at Greenville.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Averil Liles; three sons, Robert, Joe and Jerry of Greenville Route 1; mother Mrs. Ethel Liles of Drakesboro.

Linville, Ruby Mae

Mrs. Ruby Mae Linville, 84, of White Plains, died Friday, May 13 at 4:35 p.m., at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.

She was born April 23, 1904 in Muhlenberg County.

Survivors include seven sons, Clifford Linville of Louisville, Henry L. Linville of Pelion, S.C., Jimmie T. Linville of Hopkinsville, Leonard E. Linville of Robards, Hershel Linville of Paducah, Billy W. Linville and Harold D. Linville of Graham; two daughters, Mrs. Gladys Phelps of Central City, and Mrs. Virginia Cobb of White Plains; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren; two brothers, Willie Moore of Henderson, and Paul Wilbur of Livermore, and three sisters, Mrs. Mary Knapp of Madisonville, Mrs. Pauline Frost of Whiting, Ind. and Mrs. Mamie Dukes of Robards.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Midway Valley Pentecostal Church, Princeton, with the Rev. Willard Walls officiating. Burial in Lance Nichols Cemetery, in Princeton. Gary's Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements.

Linville, Will

Greenville - Will Linville, 75, of Greenville, died Wednesday, May 31, in Muhlenberg Community Hospital at 10:42 p.m. following a long illness. He was a retired farmer and carpenter, member of the Princeton Pentecostal Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ruby Linville; seven sons, Clifford Linville of Louisville, Henry Linville of Pelion, S.C., Jimmy Linville of Hopkinsville, Leonard Linville of Chicago, Hershal Linville of Paducah, Billy Linville and Harold Linville of Graham; two daughters, Mrs. Virginia Stanley of Greenville and Mrs. Gladys Gray of Columbia, S.C.; 36 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

Services were Saturday at 2 p.m. at Princeton Pentecostal Church by the Rev. Willard Walls with burial in Lance Nichols Cemetery in Caldwell County.

Litsey, Dewey

Dewey Litsey, 49, Is Buried April 20

Dewey Litsey, 49, of Evansville, died at 6:23 p.m. Sunday, April 17, in St. Mary's Hospital. He was a former employee of Whirlpool and was a disabled veteran of World War II. He formerly lived in Martwick.

Surviving are a former wife, Mrs. Mae Litsey; daughter, Miss Giner Litsey; sons, James and Thomas Litsey, all at home with his former wife; sister, Mrs. Marjorie Taylor of Jeffersonville, Ind.; three brothers, Albert, Charles and Jess, all of Evansville.

Funeral services were held at 9 a.m. Wednesday in Evansville, continuing at 2 p.m. at Nelson Creek Baptist Church in Muhlenberg County with the Rev. Doyle Eddings officiating. Burial was in Sunnyside Cemetery at Beaver Dam.

Littlepage, Josephine Taylor

Greenville - Mrs. Josephine Taylor Littlepage, 61, died at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the Muhlenberg Community Hospital.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church and a member of the Missionary Society.

Surviving are her husband, Lewis Littlepage; a daughter, Mrs. Juanita White and a granddaughter, Jo Ellen Lucas, all of Greenville; two sisters, Mrs. Daisy Edison and Mrs. Ora Lee Williams, both of Indianapolis, Ind.; two brothers, James Taylor of Greenville and George Henry Taylor of Detroit, Mich.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the First Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. M. A. Dykes. Burial will be in West End Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Bibbs' Funeral Home in Greenville after 6 p.m. today.
