Clay H. Middleton, 94, World War II [sic] vet, dies
Greenville - Clay Hershel Middleton, 94, of Louisville, died Sunday, March 5 at VA Medical Center, Louisville.
He was born Jan. 20, 1895 in Rosewood, was a retired farmer and coal miner, and was a member of Luzerne Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War I [sic].
Survivors include seven sons, Jim B. Middleton of Shepherdsville, Courtland Middleton of Columbus, Ga., Freddie W. Middleton of Brandenburt, William A., Henry E., Danny R. and C. Norris Middleton, all of Louisville; four daughters, June Rose of Denver, Colo., Jerry Ewton of Jefferstown, Ind., Anita Hottendory of Everett, Wash., and Margaret Capps of Louisville; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother, Alvey Middleton of Powderly.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Gary's Funeral Home with the Rev. Walter Evitts officiating. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery.
Eurie Middleton, 59, Is Buried Sunday
Greenville - Eurie Middleton, 59, Greenville, died at 4:45 p.m. Friday, March 10 at the Hopkins County Hospital in Madisonville after an illness of several months.
Mr. Middleton has been employed as a section hand by the Illinois Central Railroad for 16 years.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ethel Middleton of Greenville; three daughters, Mrs. Adrain Arnett and Mrs. Billy Hardison of Greenville; Mrs. Cecil Weightman of Evanville [sic]; four brothers, Att of Nebo, Herschel of Luzerne, Brank of Greenville and Alvey of Powderly; sister, Mrs. Bobby Jones of White Plains Route 1; six grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. H. Curtis Erwin officiating. Burial was in Forest Grove Cemetery.
Central City - Mrs. Maggie Milam, 91, died early Saturday in Detroit, Mich. Born in Muhlenberg County on Dec. 16, 1881, she was a member of the Central City Church of Christ.
Surviving are a son, Roy Milam of Central City; a daughter, Mrs. Gladys Parker of Detroit; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren, 12 great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Mollie Mallory of Penrod.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. today at Tucker Funeral Home, conducted by Earl Giesete of the Central City Church of Christ. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City.
Greenville, Ky. - Mrs. Pauline Milam, 68, of Greenville died there Saturday at Muhlenberg Community Hospital. She was born in Muhlenberg County, was a retired licensed practical nurse and a member of Main Street Church of Christ.
Survivors include a son, Ronald Milam of Greenville; a daughter, Jean Howard of Central City; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; her mother, Eva Mae Sims of Allegre, Ky.; a brother, Howard Sims of Allegre and a sister, Dorothy Poole of Princeton.
Services are 2 p.m. today at Tucker Funeral Home, Central City. Burial in Horton's Chapel Cemetery, near Belton. Visitation at the funeral home.
Central City - Roy Finis Milam, 69, of Central City, died late Thursday at the Muhlenberg Community Hospital, Greenville. He was born Feb. 11, 1905 in Logan county and was a retired miner.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Pauline Milam of Central City; one son, Ronnie Milam, Greenville; one daughter, Mrs. Joe Mac Howard, Central City; one sister, Mrs. Gladys Parker, Detroit, Mich.; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services at 1 p.m. today at the Tucker Funeral Home with Thomas Orr, minister of Greenville Church of Christ, officiating. Burial in Rosehill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home in Central City.
Central City, Ky. - George Leslie Millard, 65, of Central City, died Sunday at Hopkins County Hospital, Madisonville. He was born in Muhlenberg County, was a retired miner and was a member and deacon at the Cherry Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Christabell; three daughters, Sue Harrison of Hartford and Louise Murphy and Joyce Risley, both of Central City; seven grandchildren; three brothers, Jerry Millard of Central City, and Belva and Billy Millard, both of Louisville; three sisters, Agnes Devine of Louisville, Hazel McMasters of San Diego, Calif., and Nola Skipworth of Central City.
Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Tucker Funeral Home, Central City. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery, Central City. Visitation after 2 p.m. today.
Clee Miller dies at home here on March 24
Funeral services held Saturday afternoon at Methodist church; burial in Fairmount.
Funeral services for C.M. Miller, 51 years old, were held at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Methodist church. The Rev. Wade Weldon, pastor of the church, officiated.
Death occurred at 11 o'clock Thursday night, March 24, after an illness of several weeks, at his home on West Fifth Street.
Mr. Miller was born August 12, 1887, in McLean County, moving to Central City in 1920 from Rumsey, having been a citizen of this city for eighteen years. For a number of years he held a position as mine foreman at the Pacific Coal Company. Members of the I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 24, of which Mr. Miller was a member, had charge of the services. Interment was in Fairmount cemetery.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Ethyl Miller and six children; Mrs. Brank Beck of Powderly; Mrs. Larry Lanham, Howard Miller, George Albert Miller, Elizabeth Miller and Joe Nell Miller, all of this city; his mother, Mrs. Sebiner Dossett, city, and five grandchildren.
Pallbearers were: Active, W. M. Sheets, M.C. Robertson, Willie Vaught, W.T. Gray, Vernan Bryant, Green Kile; honorary, F. Hershberg, L.J. Turley, Frank Rule, Cortland Harper, John Neal, Porter Ham.

Mrs. S.F. Miller, 59, Dies Jan. 11
Evansville - Mrs. S.F. Miller, 59, of Evansville, Ind., died Friday, Jan. 11 at St. Mary's Hospital after a long illness.
She was the former Elizabeth Oldham of Graham.
Surviving besides her husband are three sons, Samuel and Steven of Evansville and Michael of Paris, Ky.; daughter, Miss Jean Ann Miller of Evansville; mother, Mrs. Jennie Oldham of Graham; three brothers, David Oldham of Graham, Gilbert Oldham of White Plains and Elwood Oldham of Nashville, Tenn.; two sisters, Mrs. Martha Jean Watkins of Paducah and Mrs. Shirley Ann Vincent of Evansville; two grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Monday with Rev. Dale Jackson officiating. Burial was in Locust Hill Cemetery.
Isaac R. Miller, 85, Dies Near Greenville
Isaac Randolph Miller, 85, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, at 4 p.m. at his home near Greenville.
Funeral services were conducted Friday at 2 p.m. at Carters Creek Church with the Rev. Raymond Forsythe officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Alvin Aders of Greenville, R2, and Mrs. Homer Ingle of Greenville, R3; two sons, Ivie Miller, Evansville, and Charles Miller, Greenville; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
John F. Miller, 78, is buried Sunday
Millport - John Faith Miller, 78, a resident of Sacramento Route 1, died in Hopkins County Hospital on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
he was a retired farmer, born in McLean County, Nov. 16, 1888 and was a member of Sacramento Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Retha Miller, five sons, W.C., Ronnie and Joseph, all of Louisville, Franklin and Dennis of Sacramento Route 1; four daughters, Mrs. Helen Hobgood of Louisville, Mrs. Ann Knight of Madisonville, Mrs. Emma Jean Caldwell and Mrs. Dorothy Rickard of Sacramento, 21 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Winnie Coffman of Madisonville, Mrs. A.T. Stover of Weatherford, Okla. and Mrs. Alice Woodruff of Eakley, Okla.
Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Briar Creek Cumberland Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Ben Woodburn. Burial was in Briar Creek Cemetery.
Death of Infant.
Mary Lou Miller, 3-month-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Miller, died at 1:15 o'clock Sunday morning, April 10, at the home of her parents on West Fifth Street of Bronchial pneumonia.
Funeral services were conducted at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the residence by the Rev. James Thompson. Interment was in Fairmount Cemetery.
Surviving are the parents; grandparents, Mrs. Clee Miller and C. Anderson; great grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Anderson and Mrs. Ollie Lindsey.
Pallbearers were members of the Rebekah lodge.
Robert H. Miller, 75, Buried Saturday
Robert Howard Miller, 75, of Central City, died at his residence on Reservoir Hill Thursday, March 20, at 8:45 a.m.
Born in Muhlenberg County April 17, 1893, he was a retired coal miner and a veteran of World War I.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Hazel Miller; son, Robert Paul Miller of Hammond, Ind.; daughter, Mrs. E. C. Gray of Central City Route 2; six grandchildren; sister, Mrs. Nora Warner of Central City.
Services were Saturday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. W. L. Blake of Beech Creek officiating, assisted by the Rev. Bobby Hambrick. Burial was in Muhlenberg County Memorial Gardens.
R.L. Mills dies in Atlanta, Ga.
R.L. Mills, former Central City merchant, died at his home in Atlanta, Ga., February 21, of pneumonia. Mr. Mills had been suffering from a broken hip. He was a relative of Mrs. R.W. Mitchell, residing in this city.
Elmer Mitchell Dies Sunday in Louisville
Elmer Mitchell, 71, died at St. Joseph's Infirmary in Louisville at 2:30 a.m., Sunday. He was born in Muhlenberg County in 1881 and was a member of the Central City Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday in the Baptist Church with the Rev. O.P. Bush and the Rev. Francis Tallant officiating. Burial was in Fairmount Cemetery. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Alpha Addington Mitchell, Central City; one son, Clyde R. Mitchell, Greenville; one granddaughter; five brothers, Walter Mitchell, Poole; James T. Mitchell, Chicago; R.W. Mitchell, Nashville; Ray Mitchell, Detroit; Herman Mitchell, Akron; two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Mathias, Orville, OH, and Mrs. Pearl Posey, Beach Creek.
Gus Mitchell, 78, Is Buried July 16
Gus Creel Mitchell, 78, a retired coal miner who lived on Central City Route 3, died Monday, July 14, at 6:30 a.m. in Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville.
He was born in Muhlenberg County May 9, 1891 and was a member of Woodson Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Bettie Mitchell of Central City Route 3; son, Everett Mitchell of Central City Route 3; four daughters, Mrs. Marjorie Rager of Central City Route 1, Mrs. Ruby Sallee and Mrs. Adell Markwell, both of Central City Route 3, and Mrs. Albertine Crunk of Evansville; 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Della Stewart of Central City and Mrs. Alice Calvert of Akron, Ohio.
Services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, in Central City with the Rev. E. W. Greenwalt, pastor of Temple Baptist Church, offciating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Central City, Ky. - Henry Mitchell, 57, died at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday at a hospital in St. Louis, Mo., following a short illness.
A native of Muhlenberg County, he was a member of the Methodist Church.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Edith Myers Mitchell, Central City, and one daughter, Mrs. Nancy Mitchell Bastin; two brothers, B.E. Mitchell, Greenville, and B.A. Mitchell, Albuquerque, N.M.; one sister, Mrs. B.G. Harrington, Princeton, Ky., and one grandson, John H. Bastin Jr., Central City.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today in the Tucker Funeral Home, with the Rev. L.R. McDonald, pastor of the Greenville Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery, Central City. The body is at the funeral home.
James B. Mitchell, 94, Buried Dec. 26
Powderly - James Benjamin Mitchell, 94, of Powderly, died at 7:40 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 22 at the Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
He was born in Muhlenberg County Sept. 1, 1872.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday in Central City with the Rev. S.A. Kittinger officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Nannie Mitchell; eight daughters, Mrs. Dave Rhoades of Martwick, Mrs. Elna Whitaker and Mrs. Hazel Doom of Central City, Mrs. Una Drake, Mrs. Maybell Vincent and Mrs. Bonnie Lee of Powderly, Miss Josie Mitchell of Evansville and Mrs. Evelyn McEvain of Chicago; son, Henry Mitchell of Chicago; sister, Mrs. Delia Board of Powderly; brother, Bud Mitchell of Central City.
Mrs. A.C. Mitchell taken by death
Died at home in Central City at 3 o'clock Monday morning of complications.
Mrs. Mary G. Mitchell, wife of A.C. Mitchell, died at her home here at 3 o'clock Monday morning, following several months illness, of complications.
Mrs. Mitchell was born in Louisville, on February 23, 1878, the daughter of Michael F. Purtell and Honora Flaherty Purtell.
Together with her family she came to Central City to make her home on June 1, 1921, her husband, A.C. Mitchell, having been general yardmaster for the Illinois Central Railroad at Central City since May 1, 1920.
Mrs. Mitchell was the perfect wife, mother, neighbor and friend. Humble, sincere, charitable and gracious in all of her acts throughout her life here, it may be truthfully said of her that it will be difficult, if not quite impossible, to fill her place in the community.
Early in life she married A.C. Mitchell and to this union seventeen children were born, eight of whom survive: Mrs. William Morgan of Greenville; Misses Mildred Mitchell, Mary Celestine Mitchell and Martine Mitchell of Central City. Messrs. Arthur Mitchell of Hopkinsville, Arnault Mitchell, Alonzo Mitchell and Anthony Mitchell of Central City. She is also survived by her husband.
Mrs. Mitchell was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Central City, and to this church she gave much of her time, always the willing, cheerful worker, never wearying, even when her health was frail, of contributing of her time, labor and money toward its interest.
Her funeral was conducted from St. Joseph's Church at 10 o'clock Monday morning, her pastor, Rev. P.J. Braun having charge of the services. Interment was in Fairmount cemetery.
Pallbearers were: Honorary, C.S. Kelly, M. Monaghan, A. Allen, S. Depoyster, J.S. Berry, Everard Bryan. Active: J.F. Muilligan, W.J. Shearn, E.M. Gish, Jr., Bernard Gish, J.W. Clarke, M.T. Coffey.
Mary Lou, wife of Orville Mitchell, colored, died at her home here at 2 o'clock Monday night, from puerporal fever, after an illness of several days. The funeral service was conducted at the AME Zion church yesterday afternoon at 2.30 o'clock, and interment was in the west end cemetery.
Mrs. Nannie Mitchell, 82, Buried Sept. 28
Powderly - Mrs. Nannie Mae Mitchell, 82, died at her home in Powderly Friday, Sept. 26, at 4:30 a.m.
Born in Muhlenberg County Nov. 27, 1886, she was a member of Powderly Baptist Church.
She is survived by five daughters, Miss Josie Mitchell, at home, Mrs. Evelyn McElwain of Chicago, Mrs. Maybelle Vincent, Mrs. Uva Drake and Mrs. Bonnie Lee of Powderly; three step-daughters, Mrs. Dove Rhoades of Martwick, Mrs. Elna Whittaker of Burkley, Mo. and Mrs. Hazel Doom of Central City; 13 grandchildren and 13 step-grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Ethel Doss and Mrs. Minnie Heltsley of Central City, Route 2; a brother, Claude Edwards of Central City; step-brother, Owen Crist of Central City.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday in Central City with the Rev. S. A. Kittinger officiating, assisted by the Rev. Gene Harper. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery.
Orville Mitchell Is Buried Oct. 5
Greenville - Orville Mitchell, Greenville Negro, died at the Madisonville Hospital, Oct. 1 night.
Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church, Cherry Street, Oct. 5. The Rev. L.W. Jackson delivered the eulogy.
His survivors include his wife, Mrs. Omie Mitchell; four daughters, Mrs. Mary Reynolds, Greenville, Mrs. Margie Melton, Mrs. Katherine Taylor, Mrs. Naomi Render of Indianapolis; three sons, Johnnie of Buffalo, NY, and W.J. of Indianapolis, Ind., 15 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; brother, Hayes Mitchell, Greenville; sister, Mrs. Lottie Hill, Detroit.
Burial was in the West End Cemetery.
Richard Mitchell Dies Early Sunday
Central City - Mr. Richard “Bud” Mitchell, 87, died Sunday, October 20 [1974], at 3:10 a.m. at the Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville.
He was a retired miner, born in Muhlenberg County on July 25, 1887, and was a member of the Woodson Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Essie Mitchell, Central city; one daughter, Lucille Mitchell Nash, Deland, Fla.; one sister, Mrs. Della Board, Powderly.
Services were held Tuesday, October 22, at 2 p.m. at the Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Bob Spears officiating, assisted by the Rev. Houston Noffsinger. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery.
