Mrs. A. V. MEADOR, wife of DR. J. W. MEADOR, died at her
home in PATTIERSVILLE, OHIO
COUNTY, October 30, 1881. Deceased was a granddaughter of WILLIAM MAXWELL,
who was killed by FRANCIS ERWIN in 1825.¾ She
united with the Baptist church at Pleasant Grove, Ohio
Co in 1860, after which in 1867 joined the Christian church and continued
in the faith until her death. Sister Meador seemed to bear her long and severe
affliction with Christian fortitude.¾ Her
disease was consumption, but the tender care of a kind and devoted husband
kept her up beyond the expectation of any of her friends, and he should now
be consoled in his loneliness with the blessed assurance that she who was
so near his heart in the days of other years in that happy land, where there
are no tears or suffering.¾ Many friends
were present on the day of her burial and as I looked at her beautifully arrayed
for her long home¾ I thought of her
last words to me.¾ She said that death
had no terror for her, and that she hoped her friends would prepare for what
she had come to.

HON. JOHN HAYNES formerly of this county died recently
in Louisiana.

MRS. JAMES A. ROWE died on FEBRUARY 20th of typhoid fever.

An outrage too horrible almost to call to mind happened
near Caneyville, January 28th, 1881, by which WILEY EMBRY and six
children were burned to death.¾ We have
just learned of a death bed confession has brought out the perpetrators.¾ Dr. Jas N. BRANDON of Caneyville on his death
bed confessed he and JOHN WHITTINGHILL and BILL TAYLOR WHITTINGHILL, sons
of REMUS WHITTINGHILL did the deed.¾ Brandon
said that they took a syringe and threw chloroform through the key-holes in
the different rooms and waited till it caused a deep sleep then robbed the
house, getting $1,000.00 in money.¾ They
then set the kerosene fire in several places and ran off.¾ Mrs. Embry and three children escaped from the
fire and Mr. Embry and six children including three sons almost grown perished
in the flames. Oh God, what a crime.¾ The
parties have been suspected of some time.¾ Bill Taylor Whittinghillês wife took a $100
bill to Moormanês store to get it changed and as Whittinghill was known to
be scarce of money, it excited¾ suspicions.¾ Brandon
married a sister of the Whittinghillês.¾ We
understand that Brandon is dead
and the Whittinghillês have fled.¾ This
is the information as¾ received.¾
It may not be exactly correct in detail, but the substance is.

the first man born in Kentucky, south of the GREEN
RIVER is still alive and living on¾ his farm near Bowling Green.¾
He is now ninety-two years old, but still able to go about and attend
to a good many of his farm duties.¾ He
can vividly recall the time when¾ the
county was infested with the painted red man.¾
It makes us feel mournful inhabitant still among us.

MARCH 2, 1882 WEDNESDAY
.....................
WILLIAM M. S. BARRETT, living about seven miles northeast
of Fordsville, in Hancock County and near the Ohio County line started to
go to Cloverport on the morning of the 4th and while passing through the lane
on the farm of JOHN McGAVOCK, about four miles this side of Cloverport, his
horse fell in a ditch opposite the graveyard and crushed him to death.¾ From where I was, as I was just in front of
him, and what I can learn the accident happened as follows; The graveyard
is at the left hand side of the road going to Cloverport and near the mouth
of the lane is a small ditch washed out till it is now part gully, the road
at this part of the lane is a bed of stiff mortar, with the exception of a
narrow path on the side of the gully nest to the road, this path and the careful
observer dismounted and led his horse past it.¾
Mr. Barrett intended to ride along this path when the horse, more anxious
to keep out of the mud than the ditch, stepped within four inches of the ditch,
when the bank of the ditch gave way under his right hind foot and the old
gentleman curbing¾ him suddenly, the
horse fell backwards in the ditch with Mr. Barrett under him. Richard Fuqua
was some distance behind¾ Mr. Barrett
and saw him fall, but thought he had passed out of the lane and suddenly turned
to the right to avoid the muddy road at the mouth of the lane as there is
a small path there for that purpose.¾ When
Mr. Fuqua came up Mr. Barrett was alive, but as the horse could not get up
he went for help and when he returned Mr. Barrett was dead.¾
The justice of the peace at Cloverport was sent for, who arrived in
a short time, but considered an inquest unnecessary, as he was seen fallen
and was found before he died.¾ His remains
were taken to Mr. McGavockês house and his relatives sent for, who had him
removed to the house of his sons, Phillip and Dallas Barrett, on the farm
adjoining the farm owned by Mr. Barrett and where he made his home at the
time of his death.
¾ He was in the
76th year of age and has but three children, all sons, PHILLIP, DALLAS and
WILLIAM, all farmers, the latter living on a farm near Cane Station, Green
County Illinois and the Altha and Jacksonville
railroad.¾ Mr. Barrett was¾ a¾ Kentuckian
by birth, he was born in Lexington, Kentucky,
but with the exception of the last few years he has lived in Illinois,
since he was twenty one years old.¾ On
the evening of the 5th, his remains followed by a large train of relatives
and friend were taken to the graveyard on the farm of Noble Burch in Hancock
County when after religious services by the Rev. J. J. Keown was laid to rest
beside the infant twins of his on Phillip.

SAMUEL C. LANHAM, living near Fordsville was arrested
last week on a warrant sworn out by his son James Lanham, charged with having
committed the crime of incest by seducing his daughter Nora.¾ He forced her to submit to his beastly passion
so she says under threat of killing her if she refused.¾ It was only after assurance from her brother
that he would protect her if need be with his life that she consented to tell.¾
We understand she gave birth to a child. In default of bail Judge Newton
committed the prisoner to jail to await an examining trial.¾
The neighbors, we understand were about ready to mob him, when the
sheriff arrested him.

TINSLEY McKINNEY, who lived between MORGANTOWN
and WOODBURY in Butler Co. died some ten days ago at the age of 79.¾ On his death bed,¾ he called for his wife, who had been kept in
extreme poverty to his bedside and told her that after he died if she would
dig into the earth at a certain point in the smoke house she would find a
large sum of gold and silver.¾ After
the death, the search was made, although no hope was entertained¾ of the find as the old manês mind was believed
to have been wandering .¾ The money
was found however in a very large jug and when it was counted out it amounted
to $2,500.

Died¾ at the home
of JOHN MILLER¾ in OHIO CO.¾ on the 3rd of April 1882, MRS. JUDITH MITCHELL
in her 96th year.¾ She was as well as
usual until a few hours before her death.¾¾
She complained of pain in her shoulder and chest.¾
She said her time had come, her Savior would take her home, she had
waited so long for her release, but she was going now.¾ She gave her dying charge, when told she would
soon be well, she said no the messenger has come.¾ The pain ceased in a short time and she seemed
to be sleeping sweetly when she drew a long breath. Her grand-daughter went
to her and she was dead, without a struggle, or a moan, she had passed away.¾
She died in peace with the world for she loved all and to know her
was to love her.¾ Thought she had not walked a step for 15 years,
she retained her mental faculties to the last, and with Christian resignation
was ever cheerful and paltered.¾ For
many years she had been a member of the Baptist
Church.¾ Had been a widow the second time in 24 years,
raised six children, five of whom were present at her burial, the youngest
over 50 years old.¾ Her living posterity
at her death was 179.

MAJOR TICHENOR died on the 14th and was buried in the PONDS RUN CEM. on the
14th.

Some weeks ago the meat house of Mr. Chapman Crow of this
place was broken open and a quality of his meat was taken out.¾ He expected a repetition of this visit and kept
a close watch for some time.¾ Last Thursday
night he seemed particularly to anticipate something of the kind and he accordingly
set a trap for the thief by fastening a pistol in an old blacksmithês vise
and tying a string to the trigger and then to the door of the meat house.¾
No one came during the night and the next morning he forgot the pistol
and went to the door to unfasten it.¾ No
sooner did he touch the door than the pistol fired, the ball taking effect
in the breast about an inch to the right and a little above his left nipple,
passing through the left lung and lodging under the left shoulder blade.¾
His wife heard the report¾ of
the pistol and ran out in time to see him fall.¾
Medical aid was summoned at once and his wound which was pronounced
extremely dangerous¾ if not fatal was
dress,¾ His son PROF. J. D. CROW of
ROCKPORT, IND
was telegraphed for and his brother and other members of the family were called
in.¾ Mr. Crow has been living here a
sort time, he having moved to Hartford
last winter to go into the saddle business, but by his course had gained the
confidence and esteem of the citizens who were greatly shocked to hear of
his great misfortune.¾ He and his family
have the sympathy of the entire community.¾

Died at the home of her brother, Pinkery Petty, near Barrettês
Ferry in this county at 9 oêclock p. m. Friday June 9, 1882 of heart disease,
MRS. JUDAH ANN HARRISON, in the 67th year of age.¾ She was a daughter of FRANCIS M. and SARAH PETTY,
who emigrated from Virginia to Kentucky
during the Indian hostilities.¾ Her
father was a soldier in the Revolutionary war seven years as commissary of
subsistence in the army of General Washington.¾
He was a ROYAL ARCH MASON, his son PINKNEY has now the MASONIE APRON
said to have been presented to her father by GENERAL WASHINGTON. This apron
which is very ancient, appears to have been painted by hand.¾ It is silk and has been in nearly every Masonic
Lodge in Kentucky.¾ He died in the year 1848 at the advanced age
of 102.¾ His funeral was preached by
REV. THOMAS FISHER, and he was buried by the MASON ORDER.¾ He was buried by the side of his wife in the
Gentry graveyard.¾ Mrs. Harrison was
born near Burksville, Cumberland county Kentucky on DECEMBER 26, 1816.¾ She was married to JUDGE HARRISON on January
11, 1853.¾ On the morning of the 11th
she was buried by the side of her two little daughters¾ in the Gentry graveyard.

Angeline as she was called was born near Hancock

venerable LEWIS VOYLES, also deceased. At the age of 13 she professed religion
and joined the UNITED BAPTIST CHURCH at PANTHER CREEK and at the time of her
death was still with the church.¾ She was married to Mr. Carter , December 24,
1861.¾ She leaves her husband and 5
sons and one daughter, also her mother now MRS. LEROY DAVIESON.¾ On the 13th she was buried JACOB MILLER, beside
her two little sons.

CO.; when he learned of the marriage he came to get back his letters and stayed

went over to MR. W. A. MARLOWês.¾ She saying she loved Mason better than her husband
and refused to return home with him.¾ Both
men left and neither of them has been back since.¾ Miss Martin has found she had made a mistake
and returned home, but Stratton has left and not been seen since.

He joined the Baptist Church¾ at Pond Run, now Pleasant Grove, Ohio Co during
a protracted meeting conducted by Rev.¾ Carter
Kelley¾ and Richard Royal over thirty
years ago.¾ He leaves his wife and four
sons, Luther now at home in charge of the farm, Charles, a merchant at Pattieville,
John a clerk in the store of¾ J. M. Johnson at Fordsville and Henry a clerk

Died near Cromwell, Kentucky
August 4, 1882, Christina Hocker, in the 74 year of her age. She was born
in Butler Co. in the year 1808, and was married to Nicholas Hocker in 1855.¾ She was a member of the Baptist church for more
than a half a century and no more consistent member ever graced the society
to which she belonged.¾ She was a zealous,
faithful Christian though modes and unrelenting and her example was a power
and a light to all who sought to –drink of the water of life” and a stay to
those who were prone to wander.¾ Her
influence at home was such as to mould characters of her own caste, ever ready
to don and to wear the armor of the Lord.¾
She went about home seeking good for her hands to do, and like Paul
she –fought a good fight” she –kept the faith” she finished her work.¾ Her faith in Jesus was never known to waiver
and shown as a shinning light indeed.¾ Her
home was ever open to the reception of the ministers of God irrespective of
the denomination, and her piety was such as to inspire even them with new
zeal.¾ While Slaty Creek Church has
lost a bright light, her husband an affectionate wife, her sons a doting mother
she has gained a crown of immortality, a home in that bright clime where sorrow
never comes and pain and death are over.¾ In paying this last tribute of respect to our
beloved sister, we can do no more than point her neighbors to her as a gentle,
and the hope of meeting her in Heaven should console her husband and sons.

Mr. H. D. TAYLOR gave us the pleasure last week of looking
over a very rare book in his possession.¾ The
volume in question is a –COMPLEAT ENGLISH DIFPENFATORY” by JOHN QUINCY.¾
The date of publication does not appear, but is very ancient as appears
from the fact that it contains the autograph of Anthony Lispenard, dated 1739
and also that of Amphilis HARRISON who doubtless lived two or three generations
before Mr. Taylorês grandfather was born.¾
The work is dedicated to Joseph Colbett ESQ. Commander of FORT ST.
GEORGE.¾ The binding is a fine quality calf and the book
is well preserved although it has passed through various hands since the death
of Mr. Taylorês father and only a few days since found a place in Mr. Taylorês
library.

BLACK LEACH was tried for lunacy last Saturday and was
taken to the asylum Sunday.¾ He had
gone to church and pulled a pistol on it people demanding they vote on some
questions he raised.

of L. A. PAUL, aged 30 years 5 months 23 days.¾
She professed religion in her 15th year and joined the Methodist
Church at NORTH CREEK,
KY.¾ She
leaves her husband and four small children.

NOVEMBER 22, 1882 WEDNESDAY

MR. GABRIEL McDANIEL, living about two miles north east
of Fordsville, Ohio Co. was found under a tree about 9 oêclock a. m.¾ Wednesday morning Dec. 4 1878.¾ He had been cutting a tree and had stopped to
move his cattle away from it, it fell on him.
He remains were taken to his brother in laws, MR. JOSEPH
COOPER¾ in Breckinridge co. and was
buried in the Cooper graveyard.¾ He
was born in Ohio County
and was about 69 years of age. ( NOTE; There are two items in this issue on
this matter... in each the date above is given )

MRS. ANNA BOSWELL was the daughter of WILLIAM and NANCY
STEVENS who emigrated in 1800 from Maryland
to Ohio co. They were pioneer Methodists, her father was¾ a class-leader before there was a Methodist
Church in the county, the meeting
all being held in private dwelling.¾ He
continued class-leader and tend-holder at Old
Bethel Church
and camp ground up to his death.¾ Mother
Boswell was born in Maryland,
Nov. 13, 1799 and died Sept. 22, 1882. She married on NOV. 10 1819. ( note;
her husband was ALEXANDER HENRY BOSWELL )¾
( note; later issue, some fiend attempted to burn her home in Stringtown,
near Beaver Dam )

MR. Wm G. OVERTON to whom we wish to pay this tribute
of respect by request of his widow, was born in NORTH
CAROLINA, Sept. 25, 1825 and died Feb 25, 1882 in
Ohio Co. Ky.¾ He was married 1844 to
Mary E. Addington.¾ He left his wife
and three children. He was called Uncle Billy.

She was buried in the HENRY SMITH graveyard on the farm owned by EDWARD
BLACKBURN.

of Fordsville on the 19th, JOHN W. son of¾
JOHN W. and¾ POLLY J. LEE age
4 years 2 months and 10 days... he was buried in the HENRY SMITH JR. Graveyard¾
on the farm now owned by ALONZO SMITH.

CHRISTINA TICHENOR, an old and esteemed lady of this vicinity died on the
24th of pneumonia fever.¾ She will be
buried in the family graveyard in NEW HOPE. , she was called¾ AUNT TENIA.

MR. CHARLES K. FOREMAN married MISS BETTIE HARL on the¾ NOVEMBER 30.

MR. JAMES LAWSON married MISS MARTHA L. ROWAN last week

Berry Matlock died in the poor house on the 3rd of old
age. He had been an inmate for the last eight years and was in his 87th year
of age.

MR. T. L. TICHENOR of¾
Smallhouse, died on the 28th of pneumonia.¾ He was one of¾
the first citizens of the county and was universally respected.¾ In him the county has lost one of her best citizens,
his community one of its brightest lights.

MR. W. B. THROPE strayed from the home of his uncle of
this place on November 18th and has not been seen since, anyone having knowledge
as to his where about, please contact his uncle.

JOHN CROW JR. married MISS LAURA DRISKELL in CALHOUN,
KY. on NOVEMBER 28th.

MRS. NANCY MOORE of MORGANFIELD, UNION CO. died¾ on the 7th of old age, in her 95th year of age,
she was the sister of DR. C. .C. GRADARD OF Louisville,
who is in his 99th year.

MR. N. C. WILLIAMS living 3 miles north of Centertown,
died of consumption the 3rd. leaving his wife and several children.

MRS. JOHN P. ROWE and JAMES A . ROWE with his two little
girls went to ISLAND STATION on the 9th to attend the funeral of MRS. JAS
A. ROWE which was preached on Sunday the 10th by REV. DR. BENNETT.

MR. H. H. JOHNSON, a most worthy citizen of the Boston,
Daviess Co. lost his balance while loading on hay on his wagon, fell and broke
his neck. Died instantly.
