Local Man Was Rebel Congressman

Local Man Was Rebel Congressman

As we wrap up Uley Washburn's recent email about Civil War soldiers from Spencer County, it should be noted that many of those who supported the southern cause were impressive, educated people and not ignorant hilljacks as they are sometimes portrayed.

For instance, Theodore Legrand Burnett of Spencer County was the delegate from Kentucky to the Confederate Provisional Congress during 1861 and 1862. He was the representative from Kentucky in the Confederate Congress 1862 through 1865 and became corporation counsel for the city of Louisville in 1870 and was re-elected six times.

Burnett was also chairman of the state Democratic committee in 1876. He died in Louisville Oct. 30, 1917 and is buried at Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville.

Burnett, born Nov. 14, 1829 in Spencer County, was graduated from Transylvania University's Law Department in 1846. He fought in the war with Mexico and returned to Kentucky in 1847 and that year was elected Spencer County attorney.

In 1852, he and Elizabeth S. Gilbert of Spencer County were married and produced (at least) one son, John C. Burnett.

And continuing with our list of Civil War soldiers from Spencer County (including reference and microfilm numbers from the Old Military Records Division of the National Archives. )
